Texans not Mr. Nice Guys anymore

GP

Go Texans!
Drafted TJ.

Traded for PB (Possibly at the expense of letting Aaron Glenn go, as well).

Peek assumed to be on the field more this season.

Looks like many of us fans who thought our team was too nice, too soft, are seeing a definite trend toward acquiring players with a bit of a mean streak in them.

Like it or not, it's a new day. Maybe now we can actually see a team that doesn't treat each NFL game like it's a Cub Scout meeting with cookies and punch afterwards.

I don't like the fact that it looks like we'll be missing two cornerstone pieces of our franchise (Sharper, and now possibly Glenn). However, let's not pretend that the player and his agent are the guys in the white hats while the Texans front office wears the black hat.

Just because they sign the paychecks doesn't make losing Sharper and Glenn their fault. For all we know, they offered both Sharper AND Glenn a chance to stay (yes, probably for less money) for at least one more season: A one-last-good-bye season for both players. We do have a great front office, so it's just really hard for me to imagine that we've just shafted two gus like Sharper and Glenn. Can't see it happening.

In my eyes, they were both told they could stay if they would re-structure...and, that this year's draft would be heavy on defense with the focus of this year being a transition from the "old" to the "new," and it just didn't sit well with Sharper, and supposedly is not sitting well with Glenn and his agent(s).

To me, it looks like our front office knows they have enough nice-guy players to send down to the community center for photo shoots and pancake breakfasts with the elderly...now we've got us some enforcers who will ratchet up the nastiness a notch when Sunday rolls around.

Thank goodness.

eh i kinda agree and disagree. what the texans organization was doin was building a team of players who would work together not a team of hot shots thinking its all bout them. they wanted players with class not players like owens. now u can have enforcers people with mean streaks but also be a really good classy guy like mean joe that guy was a beast on the feild but off he was like a big teddy bear. i dont think signing people with attitude problems is the right step for this organization but in their defense i dont know everything that went on behind the curtain. but im still sticking to how i feel...were kinda goin in the wrong direction.

Let's be real, Sharper, Glenn, and Walker were in the decline of their careers, and are also considered "aging vets". In Houston, im getting sick and tired of that term.

Casserly somehow managed to get a whole lot younger in defense, and he somehow did it with just one offseason. Greenwood(26) replaces Sharper, Buchanon(24) replaces Glenn, and TJ(23) replaces Gary Walker.

Now let's talk briefly about the draft, which i also think he did wonderfully. He brings in a Center, who i think will be our starting RG or C by next season. He brings in Jerome Mathis, who will/potentially take up two roster spots, Bradford's spot and Moses/Swinton spot. Vernand Morency could potentially be our starting back next year if DD asks for an outrageous price. Everyone else, we will have to see what they do in Training Camp.

I think this was a new day, this offseason was to destroy and rebuild, and Casserly and Co. said that they werent going to make many moves. Yeah Right, good job though Casserly, im backing him up 100 percent.

Shedding that 'nice guy' image does seem to be the order of business this year. Should make for an interesting change I would think .. Give us more intensity.
The days of watching the players on the sideline laughing and joking amongst themselves might be over. That would be a good thing. Give us a little more respect around the league.
Btw .. welcome GP .. where you been?

all i have to say is thank god we're shedding that label...football isn't a nice sport...it's not something like baseball where violence never occurs...this is a violent game...aggression is one of the most underrated qualities a player can have...and this team has been too passive at times in my opinion...case in point the cheap shot at moses with no one to defend him...screw that...someone should have stood up for the 5'6'' return man and then pointed at del rio like g-funk did at the first game against the boys...i was so embarassed for our guys that game...it looked like we were getting pushed around at our place and didn't even have the guts to try to stop it...guys like antwan peek, travis johnson, robaire smith, earl, d-rob, and faggins will hopefully bring a new attitude towards this defense and hopefully this team

people might call them thugs or punks but atleast they are standing up for themselves...and punishing some people...i can't wait to see travis johnson's first hit on leftwich :heh:

I heard on the news that our new WR had gotten into trouble for fighting a couple of times. I don't want a TO or Key on the team, but I wouldn't mind a WR that's not afraid to take it over the middle and bust a DB in the mouth. I don't want a goon, but it seems like to many WR are "pretty boys".

:thumbup Im with you on this one man, good post.

From the front page story on houstontexans.com:

Johnson’s quickness and toughness inside catapulted him to the top of the Texans’ draft board. But he certainly didn’t seem like a high-profile pick Sunday. If anything, Johnson just wants to grab his lunch pail and blend in.

“I just want to do whatever I can to help the team,” he said. “Whatever Coach wants me to play, I'll play. If he wants me to hold the ball, I'll hold the ball. I just want to contribute and earn my paycheck like everybody else.”

-------------------------

Yeah, sounds like a real trouble-maker for the coaching staff. A real pain in the rear, if you ask me. This guy is a total bust.

Seriously, though: When you're WANTED, you understand that the sidewalk ends and the road begins. This guy screwed up in college, but it looks to me that he got the message loud and clear: The Texans picked him, and whether the rumors of us wanting someone else but had to settle are true or not true....the fact is that we picked him and he's already been told that he's at the very least going to be cycled into several plays. And I bet he knows that he can get more playing time and a bigger paycheck if he unseats a veteran or two. America is a land of opportunity, and it just cam eknocking on TJ's door.

Our staff knows that the Titans will re-load over the next few seasons and be right back where they used to be. Our staff knows that Indy is spending all of their picks on the defensive side of the ball, trying to keep up with us and J-ville. Our staff knows that Jacksonville will surpass us if we don't stand up for ourselves and do something about it. Del Rio may be a jerk-wad...but he's smart. He knows that the NFL is won by the act of physical aggression, taking other teams to that point of shame and discouragement that can't be recovered from when the clock is winding down. Beat the other team down, and watch them implode.

It's why we cried when David Carr leapt over the pile on fourth down against J-ville for the win. We said, "We're the better team and we can prove it" with that effort. It's why we got mad on Sunday night when we let G-Bay get away with a win that was ours had we simply finished them off. That sort of inconsistency has got to stop. We needed some guys who are wired differently than what we have traditionally been accustomed to.

I want to see a few friendly fights on the training field this summer. I want to see an innocent fight between us and Dallas when we scrimmage. I want to see us carry that into the seaosn and smack J-Ville right in the chops for two more games. I want to see us finish other teams off like we know should, and I want to see us in the playoffs to show the rest of the nation that Houston is the real home of Texas football.

Hopefully, we've started that course of action this past week with a couple of guys in TJ and PB who are ready to rock.

if Jerome Mathis is anything like Steve Smith or Hines Ward in terms of personality im all for it.

i hear jerome mathis is a "gifted" punt returner and should challenge buchanon, swinton, and moses for the job. ya never know. he came out of a DII school, so maybe he does have hines ward ability. i know that sounds very optimistic, but its still possible. i would like him just as a punt returner or a gunner on special teams. he has incredible speed

Folks should have seen this coming. If you build a team mainly for character, you can afford some guys who need support from the rest of the team to stay straight. If you build a team of thugs, you take the guys on the edge and guarantee they become malcontents--see Oakland.
