Texans Needs

Wild.Bill

Practice Squad
When I look at our team needs, I rank them as:
1. Linebacker
2. Offensive Line
3. Tight End
4. Defensive End
5. Wide Receiver

Our linebacking crew is undersized. We have speed with Greenwood and Orr, but we don't have a dominant inside linebacker. I would love to see us get AJ Hawk. However, I don't seeing anybody putting together a decent enough offer for us to be willing to move out of the first pick of the draft, except the Jets. The Jets want another quarterback, and I think that they really want Matt Leinart. They have to pick before New Orleans to get him, which means they may be willing to mortgage the future to get him. If they would be willing to give us their second round pick this year and next years 1st round pick, I would move down with them. Now if that happens, we may still get Reggie Bush at #4 being that New Orleans will most likely select V. Young and the Titans D'Brick.

Now to the first pick debate, I agree that we have bigger needs than Reggie Bush. Mario and AJ are far more pressing needs for this team, however a guy like Reggie Bush doesn't come around every year. This guy is a complete game breaker that can take it to the house every time he touches the ball. You can't pass on somebody of his talent. He can't be compared to Rocket Ishmael and Desmond Howard as I've seen other people compare him to on the message boards. Those guys had straight line speed, but Bush has the field vision, quickness, and is very elusive. In the NFL, you cant survive with just speed, you have to have these other qualities which Bush possesses.

Vince Young, Vince Young..... What an incredible talent. If he gets the right offensive coordinator, this guy has the "potential" for greatness. However, the Texans have a quarterback that in my opinion will be great. No knock on Vince. I'm a huge fan of his, but the Texans don't need a quarterback.

So what do I think the Texans will do on draft day??

1. Trade with the Jets and pick up their second round pick for this year and their next year 1st round pick. We'll either take Reggie Bush (most likely at #4) or if the Titans take Bush at #3, then we take D'brick.
2A & 2B - Pick up the highest rated offensive lineman and tight end on the board
3A & 3B - Highest rated linebacker and cornerback

Now, we can bounce around names for those picks, but I think these are the positions that will be filled.

I think we're going to fill our number 2 receiver position in free agency.

This is my opinion for this NFL Offseason and I think the Texans will finish 7-9 this year.

I think we'll get a 2nd WR in the offseason also. I'm rooting for David Givens (went to Humble).

I forgot who said this, but I think we could trade with the Jets to #4, then trade back down again with Oakland at #7. Stockpiling picks would be nice. At #7 I think AJ Hawk or Vernon Davis will still be on the board and I would love for either one of them to come here, especially Davis. We haven't had a decent tight end since Billy Miller's first year and Davis, IMO, will be more than decent. I think he can be like Tony Gonzales or, dare I say, Antonio Gates. I don't know how realistic trading down twice is, but it's nice to dream about.

If we do trade down to just the 4th spot and stay there, I would prefer we pick up Mario Williams than D'Brick. Hasn't Williams been rated higher as a DE prospect than D'Brick has an O-Line prospect?

1. LT (DBrick) or Vernon Davis (the only TE worth taking with our #1 IMO)
2. DE and sadly, the needs here rival those of OL. I would not kill myself if the team does drop to take Mario and then takes BA OL with the 33rd.
3. OG or Center
4. TE if we don't take Davis with our first
5. CB (PBuc and Faggins are not the answer IMO)

FA possibles, coupled with getting Wong back to play MLB for us will have to do for this year IMO (can't plug all the holes this team has in one draft)

The only problem that I have with V. Davis is that he is only 6'3". The thing about Gonzales and Gates is that they are so tall.

I can see us trading down once, but not twice. Especially if Reggie Bush is sitting there at #4. The guy is too good to pass up.

I would like to see us draft:
1. Reggie Bush
2. Johnathon Scott and Nick Mangold
3. David Thomas and Ahmed Brooks (I think that his name - Middle Linebacker)

I don't see any defensive ends worth drafting past the first round. We're better with Peek and Babin.

Brooks is in the supp draft if anything. DE for later rounds = Ray Edwards.

Gonzo is 6'4'' and Gates is 6'5''. Davis had a Vertical around 41'' and I would bet was much stronger than each as they were basketball players. This guy is going to be the real deal in my opinion. That does not necessarily mean I would take him.

Vernon Davis is the best WR in this draft...never mind that he is a TE. If you need a target for your QB he is probably numero uno.

Lots of us (fans) say things like this, but rarely do I see a play where 1 or 2 inches was the difference--I don't see Gates going up over people near as much as I see him being in the right place and making the catch.

I think OLine definately is the teams #1 need.
I think getting Vernon Davis would help our team more than getting Reggie Bush.

I agree that his workout at the combine was very impressive (V. Davis). I haven't watched any of his game film to know how performs. I'm interested to know what kind of field instincts that he has. I'll refer to David Thomas because I've been watching him for the last few years. Thomas isn't the most athletic, however he knows how to get open and find the soft spots in a defense. I think that you look for those qualities in a football player as well as their physical attributes. That's why I think so highly of Reggie Bush. His field presence and ability to elude defenders is special.
On the NFL level, players know how to use the field to cut off fast players. The ability to be elusive, make people miss, and see openings become much more important.

If V. Davis has these instincts and ability, then I say let's go for it. However, I don't see us trading down far enough to take him.
R. Bush
V. Young
M. Leinart
M. Williams
AJ Hawk

All of these players will be rated higher than him and I don't see us trading to #6 unless SF puts up a sweetheart deal. The farthest I see us trading down is to #4 with the Jets.

But that's my opinion and certainly up for debate.

I agree with you other than that A.J. Hawk is rated higher than Vernon Davis. I think Hawk is slipping a little and I doubt he goes above Davis, and Vince Young might fall past Vernon Davis too. Bush, Leinart, Mario, and D'Brickashaw will all almost for sure go ahead of Vernon Davis, and Vince, Cutler, Hawk, and Huff have a shot at going ahead of him.
