Texans need Mathis DE Colts

he is RFA, they can't franchise tag both him and RB Edgerrin James

Robert Mathis RFA Colts
Edgerrin James UFA Colts

We could make an offer to him, they have to match it or let him go

we would havel to give up something for Mathis and Edge won't get the tag, as the market for RBs is not good out of Arizona.

I like Mathis, but they will tender him so we would have to give up our first round pick and another high pick. I dont think he is worth all that.

I was just reading through the 2003 draft and realized Robert Mathis was drafted by the Colts in the 5th round with a pick they received from us...:challenge

It figures! Leave it to other GM's to sniff out good players. Casserly:homer: apparently can't!

With the money situations with the Colts I would guess that they put a mid level or low tender on Mathis. The low tender says we can get him for were he was drafted which means a new contract and a 5th round pick is what it would cost. With the mid level I think it is a 2nd or just a 1st, but I am not sure on that one. The Highest tender is a 1st and 3rd though.

Coach C is correct, they wouldn't likely sign Mathis to the highest tender so we probably wouldn't have to give up a 1st round pick for him, but what's the point in signing him? If we switch to a 4-3 he's an undersized DE that can only be brought in on passing situations and can't play a full game (similar to his current role with the Colts), and if we stay in a 3-4 then he's moved to a LB somewhere and is smaller than anyone we have at LB other than maybe Greenwood, granted he is faster but I still don't really see where he'd fit in our team that well.

The highest tender is around $1.7 million, I thought...

The mid-level RFA tender is roughly $1.3 mill with 1st round pick compensation. The top level RFA tender is roughly $1.8 mill with 1st and 3rd round compensation. I would expect Mathis to get the mid level tender if not a multi year deal from the Colts - that is if his foot problem is not going to linger into future years.
