Texans Mock Draft - Trade Down Scenario

I hate projecting trades, but I really want the Texans to trade down this year. The trading parter I have in mind traded up last year as well. And with the extra 2nd they got for Antonio Cromartie, they have the ammo. I have the Chargers trading up to 11 for Julio Jones to replace Vincent Jackson.

Texans trade #11 @ 1250 points.
Chargers trade #18 @ 900 points, and #50 @ 400 points. Total = 1300 points.

Team Needs: OLB, ILB, NT, FS, CB, WR, P.

Round 1: Pick 18: Justin Houston, DE/OLB, Georgia (6-3 258) - NFL-trained Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham's 3-4 schemes made Houston a 10-sack terror off the edge. And a Nagurski Trophy finalist. In 2010 Houston started all 13 games recording 67 tackles including a team-leading 18.5 for loss and 10.0 sacks to go along with 44 quarterback pressures, two pass break ups, an INT, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

Round 2: Pick 42: Quinton Carter, FS, Oklahoma (6-1 200) - Thorpe Award candidate in 2010. Physical defender who picked off 4 passes with 88 tackles and 5 passes broken up. Only 1 year starter for the Sooners. When Carter is not playing football, he spends his time doing charity projects. Sounds like a Bob McNair Houston Texan for sure.

Round 2: Pick 50: Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor (6-4 335) - Transfer from Penn State. Will have some red flags due to flunking out and fight at frat party. Also will need to keep his weight in check as he has ballooned before. Huge and very strong to take on the point of attack from center/guard. 2 year starter for the Bears. Last year Taylor accrued 62 tackles, 7 for loss, and 2 sacks.

Round 3) Pick 73: Martez Wilson, ILB/OLB, Illinois (6-4 250) - Played ILB in college @ 6-4 250. Can play OLB and rush the passer. Wilson was the #2 DE in the nation coming out of HS. Versitile player for the new 3-4. Finished season with 112 tackles, 11.5 for loss, 4 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 5 passes defended.

Round 4: Pick 104: Rashad Carmichael, CB, Virgina Tech - (5-11 186) - Over 2 year starting career picked off 10 passes with 95 tackles. Is considered the leader of the VT Hokie secondary.

Round 5: Pick 135: Tori Gurley, WR, South Carolina (6-4 230) - Redshirt sophmore. Nice size and sure-handed. Zero drops last season. 44 receptions for 465 and 4 TD's. In win at Vanderbilt he tied a school record with 14 receptions for 112 yards.

Round 6: Pick 166: Chas henry, P, Florida (6-3 215) - Can make clutch kicks. Won the Ray Guy Award in 2010. Henry punted forty times for 1,892 yards (47.3 average) and fourteen of his thirty-four punts (41.2 percent) were fifty yards or more. Fifteen of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line and only eleven were fair caught. Henry also assumed place-kicking duties while starting place kicker Caleb Sturgis was injured. Member of the Gators' 2008 BCS national championship team.

Round 7: Pick 197: T.J. Yates, QB, North Carolina (6-4 230) - Great size. Needs to work on his mobility, or sliding around in the pocket. But does seem calm and cool in the pocket with a NFL arm. 2010 stats - 3,418 yards, 19 touchdowns for a rating of 145.46. Career stats - 9,377 yards and 58 touchdowns. Lead his team to an 8 win season and Music City Bowl victory over Tennessee.

you hit on 1st pick, harder than it seems. then you killed it in second & show just how much value while addressing needs a trade down accomplishes. Martez Wilson in 3rd would be a steal. Like Carmichael, seems about the right round to go CB, see Quinn. love your punter in 6th, not a waste of a pick at all - starts immediately. Don't mind taking a flyer on QB or DT in 7th. Only change I make is the 5th rd. seems like Texans drafted a big WR in 7th with similar size Dorin Dickerson. I would like to see you add one OL pick either OT or C.

Willie Smith, OTHeight: 6-5 | Weight: 290 | College: East Carolina

Overview
A two-year starter at left tackle, Smith is a remarkable athlete with a lot of upside. He earned All-Conference USA honors each of the past two seasons, and might have a higher ceiling than any tackle prospect in the 2011 NFL Draft.

At this point in his development, Smith is too raw and inconsistent to project as a rookie starter in the NFL. Some offensive line coach is likely to be convinced he can coach Smith to block like Walter Jones every play, not just in spurts, and his draft status will reflect that potential of a probably Pro Bowler in two to three years.

Analysis
Positives: Excellent lateral agility, slide and ability to pull, trap and seal. Very quick, can bend knees, sink hips, anchor and generate power. Ideal frame for the NFL left tackle position properly proportioned with long arms and strong hands. Can look like Walter Jones for possessions when he uses proper technique, but not full games. Smart in the classroom. Healthy and durable.

Negatives: Former defensive lineman has less than three years experience playing offensive line. Has a tendency to resort to bad habits, most recently in the second half against Maryland in the Military Bowl, including getting too high, waist bending, being late off the snap and occasionally clearly missing an assignment. Too many times allowed the defensive end to get under his outside shoulder on wide rushes. Hand placement is inconsistent, but improving.

I like the players and positions picked in rounds 1 thru 4 as well as the 6th round .... I'd be pretty damn happy with that group. Gurley has great size , soft hands and lots of potential in the 5th as well , could really be a steal there.

Yates looks like a project that Kubiak might be willing to take on.

Upon reflection I doubt that Houston will still be available with the 18th pick. He is like a bigger, stronger version of Texas A&M Von Miller. Besides being explosive off the edge he can bull rush a OT back into the QB, or drop a much bigger OG with excellent leverage & strength. He uses classic DE body lean hanging his body out extreem angles as he works around edge, when he gets to the QB he engulfs him like the great ones. Also noticed his balance is exceptional, hard to knock off his feet. Did I mention Georgia is SEC country & he led that conference in sacks with 11 as a Junior?

Good analysis on Houston. I am surprised he isnt on LZ's list. I am interested to see how he does at the combine. Personally I would be fine with Houston, Ayers, or Miller. And if they are gone (which would suck) I am ok with taking a corner like Harris or Williams.

From what I just read in another thread - It looks like the Texans wont be getting a comp pick at all .... They only lost 1 qualifying player and signed three (Rackers , Grossman and Wade Smith).

I am assuming we will get something low, like a 5th. But I dont know for sure. Even without the comp pick I am happy with my trade down scenario assuming I can get all the players I selected in that round. I am really starting to like Martez Wilson. I am excited to see how he does at the combine.

Basically I will have to choose between Taylor, Carter and Wilson with my 2nd round picks.

Optimal selections would be Phil Taylor and Martez Wilson. Carter gets docked for being a 1 year starter, even though he projects to be a solid pro in my eyes.

Taylor would be my pick between the 3.

Although Carter looked really good at the Sr.Bowl.

Depending on who's added in FA, would help me make the choice between Taylor and Carter.

If Carter was availabe late in the 2nd. Trading up would be the way to go.

I will be happy given Rick/Gary track record if the Texans get 3 quality starters and a P out of this draft.

Taking Houston in the 1st,Taylor in the 2nd and trading up to get Carter accomplishes this goal. Hopefully Rick/Gary are reading this MB. LOL

its not uncommon as the draft process moves forward there are ascending players, just happens your acute eye has several so not only is your trade down unrealistic, the players you have selected where they're falling also unrealsitic. oh well, it happens to the best
