Texans eye Schobel
The Texans are one of the teams interested in Cincinnati tight end Matt Schobel, the Columbus native who played at TCU.

An unrestricted free agent who should be one of the hottest prospects at his position, Schobel is expcted to meet with the Texans on Monday. Buffalo and Minnesota also are interested in him.

his bio/scouting report off espn.com:
Comment:
Displays very good initial quickness off the snap. Does a nice job of avoiding the jam and getting into his routes. He is a quick TE that can get in and out of his routes with little wasted motion. He shows very good play speed - he is a threat to stretch the middle of the field. He has solid hands - good flexibility to adjust and catch outside his frame. He can make difficult catches down field and in a crowd. While he is their best catching threat, he does not start because he is a liability as a blocker. While he will give effort, he lacks strength in both his upper and lower body. He plays too high in the run game and consistently gets out-leveraged. He consistently gets knocked back by bigger DE's.

Kubes and Calhoun seem to have nothing but Bengals scouting reports at Reliant Park. What do you guys think? Does he fit? Does the hometown (kind of) factor help? It would be nice to fill this position of need before the draft. I do see he is somewhat weak at blocking, but maybe that is something that can worked out with the coaching staff.

Only 18 catches this year. He will be an upgrade over anything we had at the position this year, but still...

His most yards in a game this year was 36...I think we can do better, but I'm not exactly sure with who. Perhaps Putzier?

I would prefer Putzier, especially with the Denver connection. It's not like you have to teach him another system.

We used to have a tight-end just like this only better in the catching dept. What happened to Billy Miller?

He was more of a slow WR than a TE. He and Bruener were what the team needed split in half.

Schobel is a good pass catching TE. The reason he had next to no catches was that the Bengals use their TE's infrequently as an outlet in their offence. The Benglas were more of a vertical passing team using Chad Johnson, Houshmandzadeh and Chris Henry.

They used their TE's primarily for blocking and Reggie Kelly was usually in on those plays.

Matt shobel isnt anything special, thats why the bengals are looking for a TE in the draft.

They're after the same type of TE most teams are - one that can block and catch.

League minimum is about the right value in my opinion if the staff sees something they like. There are and will be more options in the coming months.

The espn scouting report says a lot. Schobel has inadequate strength and leverage - guess what these attributes are not nearly as important in the zone blocking scheme compared with a more traditional scheme. Schobel's lack strength will be somewhat mitigated, plus Bruener will be our main first down TE (Schobel would only play second and third down).

Offer him a low level contract.

P.S. If you think Schobel cannot block take a look a Putzier, he is one of the worst blocking TEs in pro football (although he does have great hands).

I would like to see Schobel here. I think he could be pretty productive under Kubiak. He's got good hands, and he uses his body well in traffic to clear space to make the tough catches.

Putzier, to me is, is the best FA TE. The Texans really need to go after him. Schobel could give some fits to some LBs, but whenever he's in, the threat of the run is gone. He's not big enough and strong enough to be a a blocker.

I'd love to have Schoebel. How can you pass on a guy from the greatest college out there.:yahoo: His bro playing DE in Buffalo isn't too bad either.

I'm all for getting locals to play for our team. I think its kinda cool. I wouldn't let it cloud my judgement too much, but I think its great. There is something to be said for keeping family and friends close to home.

Yeah like a certain QB from Madison High School -

Yo I have heard of Schobel and I am not impressed , what happened to our 2nd round draft choice 3 years ago........Bennie Joppru?

We still have him y dont we make sure he gets on the field this time?

joppru is a piece of glass...he breaks every time his butt hits the field...schobel would be better than any TE we have on the roster right now...but i still look for us to draft a TE on the first day of the draft

Can anyone say Billy Miller??? he can catch but gets knocked on his @$$ when he has to block. Not what we need.

I'm more of a Carr dissenters then a Young supporter, but I do admit I like what Young brings to the table. Young’s being from Houston, makes it all the better. Just don't think DC has the goods to lead us to a Super Bowl. Anyway, we’ll find out what DC is made of after this year.

What about David Thomas out of UT? He seemed to be the co-star on offense for VY up to the Rose Bowl.

I think that he is another TE that would be a liablility blocking. I think that unless some coach extremely improves his strength and run blocking, he will only be a situational player in the NFL.

Billy Miller = :tomato:
Sure he scored the 1st TD in our history, but when he left, I was a little more :yahoo:

Yeah, b/c clearly our options (and current TEs) were much better:rolleyes:

I would rather see us use the money to pick up a CB or LB in FA. The draft is fairly deep in TE this year. If you keep Bruener and Joppru can make it to opening day, then you can take a young TE and bring him along slowly. By the end of the season he might get the majority of the snaps.
We need vet. starters at CB and ILB from FA. This is not to say we should not pass on studs at this position in draft, but we don't want to start rookies at TE, LT, CB, ILB, DE

I think he tore his ACL thinking about camp this year..

I don't want to get guys like this because it could make us think we don't need to get one of the guys in this years draft and perhaps pass up on some real talent. I for one would love to get Dave Thomas from UT, and I think everyone knows that.

Now if we get another big name to come in that would be okay with me though. Just not 18 catch, slow receivers called Tight Ends.

Great. Another mediocre non impact TE. Just what we need.... And Putzier isn't much better. I'd rather get one of the young studs available in the draft this year if we can...

If we can acquire a guy like Teyo Johnson and a good blocking/receiving threat in the draft then we should be solid at TE and be able to run the 2TE sets that Denver likes to run. Teyo would be that deep threat WR/TE guy.

We need to get Klopfeinstein or the guy from Western Michigan. Big fast guys that can catch.

I would love to see Klopfeinstein in a Texans uniform. He'd be a great addition, but I think he'd be a better value in round 4 or perhaps with a late 3rd Round pick.

Whoever they choose to mess with, I just hope they put him to use for something other than blocking. Why have 3-5 TE's and don't run any plays for them?

I think with Kubiak, we can all be assured that our TE will be used for more than just roster space.

I don't think anyone picked him up after the Browns cut him.

No more Schobel....
