Texans @ Jags AAR

The Texans get the win and divisional sweep over the Jags to go into the bye 8-5. Two game lead in the AFC South.

What went well:

1) Nico/Mixon:
Just put them together. They are the engine that makes the offense go. If there is a scoring drive you can be sure to find a big play by one or both of them being part of it.

2) Penalties: Other than the big one that was offset… 3 penalties for 15 yards!

3) Good Ka’imi: 3-3 he’s back!

What did not go well:

1) Pass rush:
Jags did a great job getting the ball out quick and rendering the pass rush a non factor. They were unable to make the Texans pay for this until late when the Texans went into prevent mode but it was concerning that the best part of this team was held to 0 sacks and 3 QB hits out of 42 pass attempts.

2) Happy Feet: We know why CJ is getting happy feet. We’ve reached the point of regression. He still made plays when the pocket collapsed around him but he also missed what used to be routine plays for him when he wasn’t pressured. He no longer trusts the protection… and maybe even the play calling.

3) Azeez: I can see both sides of this. Whether you think he could avoid the hithe dealt to Lawrence or not, your defensive captain should control what happened after.

The temper tantrum displayed afterwards was not what you’d expect out of a captain. He could have made things much worse than just losing him for the game with an added unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

What was done was done, you were ejected it’s time to get off the field. I expect the league to make an example out of him (no leniency after continuing to get into it with Jags players and fans post ejection) and the Texans will be without their defensive captain at least one more game.

Texans may need to prepare themselves for DC’s assigning a shadow LB to Mixon and the cutback lanes. Thankfully, CJ and Nico forced them out of that plan in the 2nd half. Mixon kicked it into gear and popped his 100+ yards. Simple note to Slowick…..yes, you may need to modify your offensive scheme to using the pass to setup the run in order to loosen up DC’s focus on Mixon.

  1. Weird game. Hunter came into this game leading the NFL in pressure (21) and 2nd in sacks (10.5). I was surprised the Jags OL were able to keep him and WAJ (9.5 sacks) from pressuring the QB.
  2. Good adjustment getting Schultz involved in the passing game. Metchie and Dell struggled getting open today
  3. This was another game where the coaching staff failed to give one other RB a carry. I still think this is one of the reasons defenses have been able to key on their offensive tendencies
  4. Stroud made some plays similar to last year. However, he is still not as consistent as he was last year
  5. As usual. A couple of times, they were late getting out of the huddle
  6. Playing on the road, I don't think there was one false start by the OL
  7. Still seeing too many plays where TEs are weakly blocking LBs and DE

Horrible defense. Sorry, you can’t let that garbage duval team back in the game… two words, Mac Jones!! Hello!!
That game should have been a runaway in the second half.

Screen game…. Not with this slow arse Oline!

CJ a little better. The throw to Tank (not sure why dpi wasn’t called) if it was more toward the pylon, that’s a td.

Gonna leave the Shazeer play out of this. Not good

Meco needs to be more aggressive on D.

Stingley is good

I had to work so missed the game. Still, that's a big step forward by the OL Gotta give kudos where they're due.

DeMeco says they don't coach that way. But it looks like a case will be made that Al-Shaair has been targeting QBs.

But I think Mac Jones is a better QB than Lawrence.
I dunno what the hell happened to Lawrence ?
He had like one real good year, then he get banged-up real bad one year then lost his confidence ?
This is like his fourth or fifth NFL season, right ?

The fans were throwing skit at him, that would tick off any player. Any fan throwing items at players should be disciplined as well.

I hate that prevent defense crap. Meco really needs to do away with this type of mentality.

A win is a win but dang man it was stressful. This team continues to find ways to shoot themselves in the foot.
The offense is too inconsistent and very predictable.

I wouldn’t say that was the reason why Mixon got going in the second half. The run blocking on the left side performed a lot better in the second half. Receivers and Tight ends did their jobs as well, getting a hat on defenders.

The one against the Bears was a legit hit. Williams wasn’t out of bounds then. Lesson learned, get out of bounds youngster and protect yourself.

The second one he was going high to the shoulder pads. Allen momentum was going downwards. Al didn’t even touch the guy. If you played defense, you were taught, one go low and the other player go high. The narrator is just knit picking on that one big dog.

All the more reason to keep your helmet on and jog off the field. Not take it off and get into it with them.
What does having his helmet off have to do with anything? The fans were wrong for throwing crap at him period. Do you not agree with that? Or if it was you, you wouldn’t defend yourself?

He had too much hype coming out of the draft. He really wasn’t this “generational” player.
We never saw the dynamic athleticism in the NFL that Lawrence displayed at Clemson. Lawrence also made quicker decisions in college. Is he overthinking as a pro? I don't know, he's just not the same guy. Another QB the S2 test didn't correctly flag.

I believe helmets off on the field net an automatic ejection.
This is not college. And dude was heading into the locker room.

Dude worried about him not having his helmet on. But let’s not worry about the fans throwing crap at the player’s helmet on or not. Crazy logic

Can’t control the fans. But you can protect yourself from crap getting thrown on you by keeping your helmet on and getting out of there. Not taking it off and engaging further.

I understand that but I’m just responding to your comment as to what the helmet had to do with anything. Honestly… I believe Al-Shaair and Jags #22 were quickly ejected because they removed their helmets during a -confrontation- with players, fans, and/or an official. That is an automatic Unsportsmanlike Conduct ejection in the NFL. I don’t think he was necessarily ejected due to the hit itself.

Al was ejected because of the hit on Trevor. Number 22 was tossed because he was caught throwing a punch. He’s a CB.

The league can control the fans by banning them from coming to the games. They could have them arrest for throwing items at players.
In the moment, the league can’t do anything. Azeez can protect himself by removing himself from the situation and keeping a helmet on. My point… you should be able to depend on your highly paid defensive captain to make the right decision. Not roll the dice with angry fans. Doesn’t matter what the league does to the fans after the fact when he catches a solid object to the noggin.

Love to see Joe dance!

CJs feet are like anchored to the grass, when he scrambles it’s like they don’t react then they move his body away very slowly.

And why does he turn away from the LOS and run the other way when pressured?

Weird.

Man I’m talking about the fans throwing ****. So in basketball and baseball what should the players do? Man why are so fixated with his helmet being off?

Did Cushing make the right decision with the head butt and taking his helmet off to do so?

How about Andre Johnson and Finnagin snatching each others helmets off? That’s even dangerous correct?

Was you on here carrying on about Cushing and Johnson who were captains, the same way?

All these players are humans, who can easily get emotional just like us regular folks. You do realize they’re not super humans.

What do you mean you don't know what the he77 happened? You're watching it happen to S2roud.
I don't think the two careers are at all comparable.
TL's rookie season under Urban Myers was a disaster as I recall while CJ was the ORY,
but yes there's clearly some regression in CJ's second season.

Agree to disagree. It seems I have higher expectations of the multi millionaire defensive captain than you. I didn’t realize that keeping your helmet on and leaving the field when directed to do so by the refs and team was asking too much of him.

Wonder what the suspension would have been if he would have just kept his helmet on and left the field when ejected?

"After the illegal hit, you proceeded to engage in a brawl, which you escalated when you pulled an opponent down to the ground by his facemask. After the referee announced that you were disqualified for the hit and your unsportsmanlike acts, you removed your helmet and reengaged with your opponent while walking down and across the field, which started another physical confrontation near the end zone.
"Your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play, coach, and enjoy watching it, is troubling and does not reflect the core values of the NFL. … Your continued disregard for NFL playing rules puts the health and safety of both you and your opponents in jeopardy and will not be tolerated."

He engaged in a brawl? Lol. Whatever.

Eh, he’s being made an example of b/c the hit was so egregious and it was to a darling of the game. All the extra crap they’re talking about is fluff to dress it up.

Fact is the NFL loses all cred when it comes to this kinda stuff & punishment in general b/c of some many other cases…most recently Rashee Rice …who would actually still be playing if he hadn’t gotten injured himself.

Yep and this is why I dont watch nearly as much NFL football as I used too. I also recognize the NFL is no longer marketing to guys like me.

First off… that is missing a -lot- of context. Runyon should be fired for writing that babble.

Al-Shaair illegally-tackled Lawrence
#17 pushed Al-Shaair’s helmet into the ground face-first.
#17 shoved Al-Shaair to the ground a second time face first.
Al-Shaair was dragged down to the ground a third time by two different Jaguars players… the big lineman looking types… before he came up swinging. Before he grabbed any facemasks.

I do not question Al-Shaair’s character. I don’t know the man. He sounds like a nice guy from what I’ve heard and I’m good with that. What I do know is this… he’s a -very good- football player who pushes the limits to this game for our team. I like that. He’s no dirty player but I do think he could benefit from a few Goosefrabba sessions.

17 also hit him while his back was turned. But no one is talking about that. He could’ve easily injured Al with that hit.

Never said it wasn’t run by crooks. What is irrelevant is any other player’s history besides the one in question.
?

No other player with AL's past has gotten this harsh of a punishment and what bothers me more than the hit is the hypocrites that are getting to play judge and jury.

Next time a Titans player does something wrong I hope Vanfermeer and Ware get to hear the case and the appeal.
