Texans Hire Nick Caley as New OC

His injury has apparently caught up with him. At the end of the 2022 season, Pierce suffered a significant high ankle sprain. In 2023, he suffered another significant high ankle sprain. He continued to have ankle problems throughout the 2024 offseason and preseason and into the regular season. In Sept 2024, while trying to rehabilitate his ankle, he sustained a compensatory hamstring injury. Sometimes you can see...........but you can't do.
 
It's all fine and good for Caserio to have a vision and alignment for the offense, but I question his eye for talent and basic judgment when it comes to the offensive line. The great failure was drafting Green where he did. He whiffed in so many other aspects of the offensive line development, too. Looking at the injury history of Scruggs, it is crazy for him to have been drafted in the second round. The extensions of Howard and Mason were completely unjustifiable, as well.

The mark of a good leader is to know they made a mistake and corrected as soon as possible. I'm hopeful to see that soon with Howard and Mason and Autry. I no longer think Schultz will be traded due to the new offensive coordinator.

There were extenuating circumstances like in the Green pick. But I agree with you..

Now wait a minute. Caserio is being castigated for going with the coaches and drafting Green. But now it's OK to go with the coaches and keeping Schultz. Should or shouldn't Caserio be the bossman and tell the coaches how it's going to be?

To a certain point. But at some point you don't get credit for correcting mistakes YOU made if they keep happening over and over again. That said, I'm still on Caserio's side. I think he has to fix the O line, and that whether we can will eventually define his legacy, but I think overall he's done a solid job as GM.

If you go with coaches you better get it right.
 
Caley was my #1 choice of the first time play callers. After listening to his presser, I’m even more enthused.

We will fit the scheme and play calls to our guys strengths, without pushing round pegs into square holes (Paraphrase) is music to my ears.

Dalton could be in Trouble. I see them signing a vet TE with blocking skill and/or spending a mid round pick on a solid two-way TE.

Anyone know the cap implications if we cut or trade Dalton?

A pre June 1st trade frees up 9 million cap space and a post June 1st can increase 11.5 million. He's gone in my opinion.

Oppose their will is the type of offense I want. I think that's what our defense does under demeco.

Yes, it's really difficult to do from an offensive perspective. It's going to really ask a lot from our players who don't look particularly smart & we had trouble instituting it here & we as fans did not have much patience for it.

It would make a huge difference in the offense if Caserio could sign a solid blocking TE and draft Arroyo or Mason Taylor.

Good news is Caley knows what he's looking for.

Warren isn't a great blocking TE. He's more of a shield blocker like a young Kelce. Mason Taylor is a good blocking TE. So is Colston Loveland. (Dont believe some of the writeups like Draft Buzz) believe the tape. Jackson Hawes is another very good blocking TE and has good hands, but really doesn't have the speed to get down the seams.

I had Arroyo in the 3rd round in my first mock. Taylor is another good choice. There are others as well that might fit. I like this TE class. I expect one is a Texan around the 3rd or 4th round.
 
Not going to get excited about a press conference. As it stands now, the team is counting on Caley being that much better than Slowik. No real staff overhaul which is strange considering you’d assume Caley would want to bring guys on staff he has worked with in the past.

And if you’re running a “game plan” offense then i’d assume you want coaches who you are familiar with to help implement changes week to week.

That’s a start. But the vast majority are holdovers from previous regime(s).

Ben Mcdaniels the WR coach has been here for Tim Kelly, Pep Hamilton and Slowik.

Danny Barrett has been here as RBs coach since 2018.

Is Jake Moreland going to still be coaching Tight Ends? Or is the TE specialist Nick Caley going to find one of “his guys”?
 
Read the feature on Caley by Jon Alexanderbin the Chronicle. His coverage is a couple levels above McClain. During the season, his analysis sometimes goes down to the granular detail level and he is well sourced. I subscribe to the E version. Well worth the couple of bones per week, amd it looks good on my iPad. Highly recommend.

McDaniels and Caley grew up in the same town and have been friends for yrs. Caley was the TE coach when Josh McDaniels was the Pats OC. Caley/Ben have the same vision.

When have Ben Mcdaniels and Caley coached together?

I grew up in the same town as a lot of people, doesn’t mean we have the same vision on how to run an NFL offense.

Caley said he knew and learned from Tom McDaniels. All of those guys grew up together and after Caley coached with Josh McDaniels you can bet that Caley, Josh, Ben McDaniels share the same football philosophy.

Correct imho. Thom is the father of Josh and our WR coach Ben. Thom is a HS coaching legend in Ohio, and Caley idolized him. initially he wanted to follow Thom into HS coaching in Ohio, but life had different plans and he is now the OC here. But Caley and the McDaniels clan are close knit, and have coached together. You can bet that Nick draws inspiration from both Thom and Josh, but he will have his own style of offense. I don’t see him copycatting what Josh runs.
