Texans Hire Nick Caley as New OC

Right!
I hope he calls plays that fit CJs skillset and brings him along slowly with the new stuff.
It'll be interesting to see what he thinks of the ground game.
Would McVay not try to call plays that benefit Stroud? He seems to with Stafford...
I thought we hired Caley because of McVay being the tree. Now we don't want him to be the tree?
I don't think we should want a tree trimmer in this case.
Edit
I probably should have quoted TK

I wonder how much of what he did with McVay he’ll actually bring. I doubt he’s going to try to be McVay
IF he is capable... I LOVE this attitude if so.

People that suck at their job only try to copy what they see.

Capable/talented people break away from their mentor and live to cast a shadow, not live in the shadow of the name who taught them.

IF he turns out to be incompetent though... just do what you saw please...

That's why we copied New England for so many years?

I don't like that we did, I don't care for the Pats.... but IF we would have done so even mildly competently I might not have minded..... instead of 83 rings maybe we only get 5... still a win.

OB is a plague I hope the organization never repeats.

Personally I really wanted someone with experience of controlling an offense top to bottom but there were really only two candidates that had that on their resume in Chip Kelly & Byron Leftwich. Chip Kelly got an insane pay day so I understand not going that direction and Byron has seemingly pulled himself out of all consideration because I didn't hear his name mentioned for us or anyone.

Out of the rest Nick Caley was my top option. Aside from college guys because I think the coaching recruitment is better out of college Caley was a pretty easy pick with his resume and experience.

Hope it works well and welcome to the team Nick Caley!

Nick Caley walks in, slaps a bold trade proposal on the table like it's the NBA. Day 1 of the league year and Caserio completes a trade of Stroud to the Chargers for Herbert and a 2026 1st rd pick. Meanwhile, I sell my season tickets to SteelB at face value and 5 years of free pest control. Fast forward to the upcoming season, the Chargers in the Super Bowl…and, of course, they lose. Still no divisional playoff wins for us but we get 5 consecutive wildcard victories to hang our hats on.

Yeah but maybe we get a chance at drafting Archie. At least you will not have any bugs for 5 years?

He better be a lot better. DeMeco's not going to get many of these "chances."
Very true. Time is ticking
All he's got to do is score more than a handful of 2nd half TDs and teach his line that a stunt & twist is NOT some new dance craze.

The bar is pretty low.. and it'd be nice if we can finally get production out of the TEs.
Great points. Tight end guru? Let’s see…
I think we just need a productive tight end. Not a lazy one like schultz. You look at the top 10 tight ends in receiving yards and only 4 of them made the playoffs. Don’t mistake me, having an elite tight end will make this offense way better

Side note: he’s a tight end guru? why didn’t the rams have a tight end crack the top 25 in receiving yards for tight ends? While the ravens and pats had 2 tight ends crack it. Hope Demeco got it right

And watching rams games puka and kupp and the TEs are wide open lots of the time. Not a whole bunch of contested catches

We ain't gonna see that unless we have health on the offensive line and receiving corps.

Priorities A-Z are ensuring that what this team endured 2023 and 2024 with injuries and execution and presnap bullshit doesn't happen in 2025.

I remember multiple times this season where he was openly upset on the sideline even at Slowik. There were multiple "wtf" moments with play calling this season.
I don’t remember him being particularly upset at any one person

I thought we hired him because he & Caserio go way back & Nick wanted back on the headset on game day.

Not unless LA is paying some of the 20 million, he is due this year.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be for it, but the cap is the cap
Seems to me that Caserio/Ryans have found their scapegoat in Slowik. I'm surprised that this MB isn't blowing up complaining about retaining Popovich?

Hothy… good points.

Steel b -I dunno…maybe because it hasn’t happened yet? And nobody…you included knows how much Cole and Strausser teach alike. We also don’t know how the line might change stylistically….which might lend itself toward Cole’s strengths. All in all, I prefer a new face , but I’m not going to drive off a cliff if it’s Cole. He gets a chance like anyone else..if that’s the route they go.

I'm pretty sure that's what's going to happen.

I'm still holding out hope for Zak Kromer.
I believe I read here that the Texans went more to a gap scheme the last two games in the playoffs. And they looked/ performed a little better.

Popovich did play LG in college, so he has that experience. He's been coaching for 14 years and 8 of those were with an OL title.

Hopefully, if interviewed by Caley, he'll show his knowlege of both zone and gap schemes and has his own ideas of what's wrong and how to address the issues. Hopefully he's ready to take the next step in his career and is a capable OL coach.

But then again, Caley still may make a change. If so, I think this will come soon, this week or next.

This ol isn't set up to run a ZBS. The only guys that are capable of running it are Tunsil, Patterson, Fisher IMHO.

We have free agency and the draft to begin shaping the OL in the direction to what Caley may want. We may wish it to go faster, but it may take 2 drafts to get there. We'll see what magic Caserio can dial up, but 2025 will possibly be a transition year.

He’s been involved with the Patriots before coaching under McVay so he has working knowledge of different offensive schemes.

Im eagerly awaiting his OL coach hire, im probably being silly to hope Muchak will return to Houston (seems to have staked his lot on following the Oilers to Tennessee) but that would be a great OL coach and a great voice in his ear as someone who’s been all the way to the top job before.

Is this a one or the other kinda thing? Can it be a both and?
That's a good question. We really don't have any idea of what we need on the OL. Fisher & Patterson look like they can be serviceable at C & RT (maybe even LT for Fisher). It seems like Kenyon Green & Scruggs have a lot of injury concerns.
Seeing them working under a new OL coach will tell us if they are capable at C & G.
I'd rather see the Texans fix the OL before addressing any other position. I hope Shaq Mason retires. Father Time is undefeated.

Sshh! Don't confuse us with facts..
Caley was a passing coordinator but.. we got only 1 wide receiver.
Nicky be magic!!
