Texans Hire Nick Caley as New OC

Am I right in thinking Mike Munchak was working as a consultant for the Rams last season and that he has separately made noises that he is open to get back into coaching OL?
Munchak served as a consultant for the Los Angeles Rams during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.[10] Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed interest in adding him to the permanent coaching staff at the end of 2023, but he remained in his consulting role the following year.[11][12]

It's radically different. The entire playbook is in Vulcan.. He's one play.

That's Spider 2 Y Banana in English.
Wait... That's just one play or is that the entire playbook?

  • Texans hired Rams TEs coach and passing game coordinator Nick Caley as their offensive coordinator.

  • Caley reportedly decided against pursuing the Jets offensive coordinator vacancy and decided not to take the Patriots offensive coordinator job last year, so he has been selective in finding his first role as a playcaller. It is hard to find a more high-profile spotlight situation than being the main architect of fixing what ailed Bobby Slowik’s offense with C.J. Stroud and Nico Collins in 2024. We imagine the Texans will probably throw a little more often than they did under Slowik, who was often lambasted for how easily he dialed in on running the ball on long second downs. Caley will also have to work on the team’s pass protection and how to get that into a cohesive place. If he’s as good as the clippings and NFL attention from other teams foreshadow, Caley should have no problem turning a Texans offense with plenty of good-to-great parts into a better unit in 2025.

He better be a lot better. DeMeco's not going to get many of these "chances."
I have no doubt that Slowik is a smart guy. Hindsight is 20/20. but Slowik didn't have any experience as a position coach, calling plays, collaborating with an OL coach or even a run game coordinator.

Again. I understand DeMeco giving his friend a shot and hoping he grows into the job, and it didn't work out. This is his 2nd OC hire. Unless Caley is successful and gets a HC gig, I'm not sure he will get a chance to fire and hire a 3rd OC.

I'm rooting for Caley and hoping DeMeco got this hire right. It will be interesting to see what they do for the OL coach.

I wanted a veteran OC hire but out of what 5 hires only Josh McDaniels and Chip had play calling experience that have been hired so far.

As a Texans fan i’m on the bandwagon. If they fired Slowik for Caley that means they think Caley can fix what was wrong with this offense last season.

My question: Why was Slowik hired over Caley the first time? Better interview? Experience with DeMeco? Not that it matters anymore.

The Texans need to get this hire right. Caley is highly regarded but we wont know if they are right until we see Spag and Reid in the playoffs next season.

Is Caley going to run the ball 19 out of the last 20 plays despite racking up 146 yards rushing in less than 3 quarters of football? Which then causes Spags to take the hint and unleash the pass rushers on our hapless TE “blocking” for 5 sacks in those final 20 plays?

De me co

Let's Go, Caley! I like the choice, he brings a fresh but somewhat familiar offense. I like that McVay transferred the Shanahan offense away from the ZBS to a gap scheme.

OL coach is the next biggest hire. Unlike the OC, I'd like to see them bring in a hard-ass veteran coach to whoop the OLmen into shape and instill some discipline.

Which of our offensive linemen will be productive in the Gap offense?

He can’t be worse than slowik. Wanted them to hire someone who has experience at the position but lets see
All he's got to do is score more than a handful of 2nd half TDs and teach his line that a stunt & twist is NOT some new dance craze.

The bar is pretty low.. and it'd be nice if we can finally get production out of the TEs.

Just saw that the rams have notified Copper Kupp that he will be traded this off-season.

I can smell the 5th rounder from here. No wait…that’s bacon nevermind.
Bacon at 7 p.m., 😁👍 I'm hungry now.

I would love to get a vet who already knows the system and route trees like Kupp.

Not a fan of the hire, but I hope he proves me wrong. His experience seems like Slowik 2.0, minus the PFF stint.
Everything sounds similar to the Slowik hire. I'd like to see just one dissenting opinion from the talking heads/media. I get it, it's pom pom season and I have mine but only 1 :fingergun: for now

The 3 IOLs we're about to draft. :P

I think Shaq Mason will work better in a gap scheme, Tytus if we play him inside (assuming Blake Fisher comes along), Patterson is big enough to do it, and Kenyon Green probably fits better... though I have him at bust status atm. Really, Juice Scruggs is the only one who I think doesn't work in a gap scheme. I'm really hoping for a FA G, and a draft pick in the top 3 to compete.

Sounds like he's going to be a Raider. They're going all in one crazy.

Most folks seemed to be saying we needed an older more experienced type OC who also had
head coaching experience, but without even any OC background at all this looks like we had to settle on a leftover.
But who knows maybe this guy is very talented, an excellent teacher & communicator who clicks immediately with CJ while developeing a very close and positive relationship.
I dunno I wonder if the Rams offense is radically or just marginally different from what CJ has become accustomed to playing in the last couple years here in Houston?
McVay's offense is a form of the WCO.

The QB has a lot more responsibilities in choosing which of the 3 checks he wants to use on a particular play.

Base ~$12.5 + $7.5 roster =$20 m
Slightly less for 2026.
Errant Hothy suggests Rams could pay part..roster bonuses?
Statwise, Kupp is a older T Higgins. No thanks.

Another issue with our guards: when play is run to the right, each lineman blocks to his left. The left guard pulls and leads the back to right side of field. Anyone giving point spread on how Tytus Howard does in that scheme?

Nico, Hutchinson (?) and Metchie (?). We need 3 more for our new passing guru.
