Texans hire Bill O'Brien as HC

Well, as long as this thread is about O'Brien, let me add a completely unsubstantiated rumor of which I have only heard by word of mouth from one person. She says as a volunteer for the Houston livestock show & Rodeo that O'Brien was very rude to her in asking for directions and said he was the head coach of the Texans and deserved better treatment (or something like that).

You heard it here first folks, on the TexansTalk BBS. A internet rumor that can't be proven from someone most of you have never met. LOL

But seriously, she did say that about him. She now thinks O'Brien is a complete turd and hopes the Texans go 0-16 this year. But she's also an Eagles fan so there's that as well.

I think it is obvious that she is John McClain's secret source of NFL breaking news. :spy:

I can believe the 'rude' part, but I do not believe that O'Brien actually said that he's the head coach of the Texans and deserves better treatment. That sounds like a nugget of reality wrapped in a layer of embellished hyperbole.

But regardless, I have no doubt that Bill Parcells, Bill Belicheck, and many other winning coaches probably upset the delicate sensibilities of a few grocery sackers and waiters.

This could be an encouraging report if it means we've got a first-rate A-Hole running the Texans. Both Kubiak and Capers were known to be total gentleman and loyal to their coachs and players to a fault.
Hey Thorn, tell your frind thanks for the good news !

Peyton carried him to one. How many has he won again? (Fox)

Your assertion was that he was a failed head coach because he's a nice guy. Mine was that since he's taken two different teams to super bowls, you can hardly say he hasn't worked out

Interesting. I have heard from more than one source - reliable sources with the team - that JJ Watt, behind the scenes, is not the Boy Scout he presents to the public. I hear he's a bit of a douche. But, he's still an effective player, so it doesn't bother me.

O'Brien is a hard-edge east cost guy, and I'm fine with that - as long as he brings the W's.

Wouldn't surprise me. Fame and Money do funny things to people.

Heard same. Don't like pics taken when out with buddies, etc etc. Image is everything apparently, fam.

(Not that I give a ****, but it is rather interesting to hear stuff like that)

He looks like a butthole.... well, his chin looks like a butthole.

Cowher was "The Chin", O'Brien is "The Buttchin."

Personally, I don't care if it's true or not, but the lady that told me is a nice person, so I doubt she was lying and I believe her. Not that I care, he could have just been having a bad day, or he really is a complete a$$hole. He brings us lots of W's and a trophy or two, he can be an a$$hole all day long for all I care. And as someone else said, maybe we need that kind of personality in charge right now. It'd be a refreshing change as far as I'm concerned.

I doubt those Noreasterners take their rodeo's seriously enough to understand the importance of your friend. So it's easy to see why she would be offended by a ferener who thinks he's the big man on campus.

The other thing some folks seem not to consider is public persona is not the same as private and neither may be the same as coaching. Also being liked by players is not synonymous with hand holder. Several players and other sources have said Kubiak was very tough, even too tough on the players in coach rather than media mode.

Dick Vermiel is a really nice guy. I know Isaac Bruce's mother in law and she showed me pictures of her and Dick Vermiel in the suite for a game. She said he was reaallly nice....liked to drink wine...like to share wine...

She said they talked for a long time and he got a little drunk.

Dick Vermeil is reportedly a super nice guy, too. He took two teams to the Super Bowl and won a championship with one of them.
Jerry Glanville was an arsewipe. Supposedly. Never won a Super Bowl. Never coached in a Super Bowl. Never left Elvis Super Bowl tickets. Like I said, an arsewipe.

Of all the stupid arguments that have happened around here we are getting really close to the top of the list right now.

Being mean makes you a better football coach? GTFO of here with this nonsense.

Pete Carroll is a great guy and just won the damn Super Bowl.

P.S. yes I know about the USC scandal and if you properly research the topic you will find that he was exonerated of any wrongdoing.

It's the off-season... worst one ever :kitten:

& that's the way I think it should be. None of us would like it if our employer Gomer Pyled us in front of everybody... much less on TV. We'd have more respect for the man if he kept his cool & let us have it one on one.

Basic human courtesy. I have no use for a guy who wants to act like a kid, can't control his emotions, & treat grown men like children.

Wun't that be Sgt. Carter'd us? :kitten:

I like how BO'B handled the question about why they traded Matt Schaub. Basically said that Schaub is one of the players that needed a change of scenery.....basically saying that he sucks major balls!!!

Your close, but let me translate his quote for you. Schaub needed to be traded to a team that's on our schedule because our pick 6 returns have been down and we want to get that stat up next year.

If you know BB, this is him gushing effusively...
“I like Billy,” Belichick said. “I like every aspect about him.”

O’Brien was the offensive coordinator at Duke and finishing his 14th season in college football when he jumped at a chance to coach under Belichick.

“He’s well-prepared and smart,” Belichick said. “He has a good understanding of all aspects of the game. He’s great to work with. I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about Billy.”

In 2007, Belichick hired O’Brien as an offensive assistant. He was promoted to running backs coach a year later. After the 2008 season, Belichick named O’Brien as quarterbacks coach and gave him the play-calling duties. In 2011, O’Brien was named offensive coordinator.

“I learned a lot from Billy,” Belichick said. “He had a strong, positive impact on the Patriots.”

As a leader, you've got to find that fine balance between task master and being approachable/likeable and still come off as genuine. That's a hard thing to do and I'm not sure there's a "right" way to do it, but I'm quite positive there are bunches and bunches of ways to screw it up.

Interesting note that OB and his coaches have been seen practicing their practice routines at Texans practice facilities. In and outside going through exactly how they will conduct their practices step-by-step. With such limited hands on time allowed, this is smart to sort out any glitches before the players arrive.

The man is thorough.

Thanks for the transcript.

(on how he gets to the motor and work-ethic question with Jadeveon Clowney) “It’s a deal where I’ve studied him pretty closely. One of things and this is not to make and excuse for anyone, in college there’s like 85 to 90 plays per game. He plays all the time. I think if you looked at any player in college, especially at the defensive line spot, playing in a league where most of the teams are shotgun and throwing the ball and rushing the passer, I dare you to find me a guy that plays 90 snaps like his life’s on the line every game. But when the game’s on the line, Jadeveon plays hard. He’s an explosive player, he’s a productive player, he’s an instinctive player. So I think that’s kind of been blown out of proportion but at the same time we’ve got to make sure we get to know him and then keep getting to know him when we get there.”

(on people saying “Can you imagine him being lined up right next to or across from J.J. Watt?” at the thought of the Texans drafting a defensive player in the first round) “People do say that. They say if you draft, say (Jadeveon) Clowney, you’re going to line him up right next to Watt. I think we could at times. But I think one of the things in this league is on defense, you’ve got to be really multiple. Forget about the draft pick, J.J. Watt, you’ve got to be able to move this guy around, do different things with him to really take advantage of his skill set. People ask me about Johnny (Manziel) all the time because we’re in the draft and all these quarterbacks. The guy I really enjoy watching is J.J. Watt. I don’t know if you’ve ever actually watched coaching film on J.J. Watt, but it is, this guy is a great football player. So with a guy like that, you’ve got to move him around and then if you can add a guy or two to that defensive front, certainly that will make a big difference. So I don’t know how much they’llactually be lined up next to each other[/COLOR]. It might be more some next to each other, some opposite end, some somewhere in between.”

I truly hope that every poster in this thread takes the time to read or listen to this. Addresses a ton of things from the draft process, the number 1 pick, multiple actual prospects, use of JJ Watt, defensive philosphy. Most complete conversation I have seen from him since joining the Texans.

I should say so... eleven frk'n pages.

Heard it all on the radio earlier...Lots of good stuff in there...

Doesn't really give much away, but lots of good info.

We could open a new topic: "O'Brien in depth press conference at owner's meetings" or something similar...

no rights issues with public presser, so we could post the full Q&A grouped in posts by topic?

Easily to most introspective view we have on our new HC. Your call.

If this is true JM wont be a Texan.

ORLANDO – At this point, it appears Johnny Manziel will not work out for the Houston Texans following his Thursday pro day at Texas A&M.

That could prove an interesting turn -- and potentially be a turnoff to the Texans considering how much first-year coach Bill O'Brien prizes working out quarterbacks individually.

Asked if Manziel would work out for the Texans afterward, O'Brien said during Tuesday's AFC coaches' breakfast, "I don't think so. He's got his Johnny Day.''

Manziel won't do a private workout for Texans.
He's a dumbazz if he doesn't. Or maybe he's being smart.

Can you imagine the pressure he'd have on him if the Texans drafted him? The Keenum Kraze on steroids, amphetamines and Red Bull at the same time.

Maybe he, or his team, recognizes that and would actually prefer a slightly less stressfull environment. Cleveland and Jax are used to having top 10 QB picks fall on their face. :choke:

How did you get "in depth" out of that? That was a whole bunch of everything we've heard already. I didn't get anything new out of that at all.

"Everybody has good and bad points. We're in the process. These guys are going to compete in camp. Tough. Smart. Adaptable." Same old same old to me.

I interpreted it differently. I got the impression that it wasn't F'knFootball's call.

I took it as he didn't get an invite.
Really? That would be really odd.

JF has more to lose that just about any other QB, regardless of hwere you rank him.

He could be #1 or #101. JF's decision to not do personal work outs for the Texans only increase that thought. OB wil NOT be upstaged by his QB.

My point is: How do you know it was F'kn Football's call?

Still sounds to me like he didn't get an invitation.

OTOH, that's been the Texans' MO.

WTF really knows?

I believe the Texans are having private workouts with Bortles and TB.

Also, why would the Texans be turned off if they didn't ask?

If it is correct they are having private workouts with the other two and didn't ask Manziel I wouldn't think that bodes well for him anyway.

That was the basis of my "Texans' MO" statement. Sorry if it was not portrayed succinctly.

Manziel doesn't want to play for the texans? Or did he get wind he's not near the too of our list? Or just out of touch with reality?

Others may not agree, but I strongly feel that OB is not one to take kindly to the "johnny football" aura...........and, despite Manziel stating that he is leaving "johnny football" behind...........he is still actively pursuing the name's copyright. At least Tebow and Kaepernick waited until they got into the NFL and produced "something." Manziel will come into the league by his own choosing with that monicker.........and will be sooner than later carried off the field on a cart, covered by a hand-made shroud that carries his image captioned with big letters spelling out "J-O-H-N-N-Y F-O-O-T-B-A-L-L L-I-E-S H-E-R-E." Of course, JMHO.:)

Johnny Day ? Clearly a shot of sarcasm by O'brien. That's the worst kind of timing for Manziel to get on OB's shix-list right now.

since no of the other mods wanted to open one while I was not around so much, I think we just leave it here.

...[JF] is still actively pursuing the name's copyright...

Copyright = original work of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression (i.e., literature, art, music). It's pretty straightforward and vests automatically, no lawyer required. There can be no copyright in "Johnny Football" because it is not an "original work of authorship."

Trademark= identifier of the source of goods (i.e., word, phrase, symbol, design). This is much more nuanced than copyright.

The story of the "Johnny Football" trademark is fairly interesting:

And his trying to control the "Johnny Football" trademark does not make him some greedy guy who puts fame over football; it's just the smart thing to do.

Oh, but I'm not saying he ISN'T an obnoxious fame-monger whose game won't translate to the NFL. Hope the Texans don't touch him with a 10-foot pole.
