Texans hire Bill O'Brien as HC

A pretty good read by Tanya Ganguli on our new coach.

Bill O'Brien big on building trust, dedication

Excellent piece by Tania on Bill O'Brien...

...
But to address this story?

“This is awkward,” O’Brien says.

It was the relayed recollection of an old coach that started this. Mickey Kwiatkowski, who coached at Brown University when O’Brien played there and when he first coached there, remembers that night from 1992 clearly. They were about to play Columbia in the last game of the season and he asked his seniors to speak to the team. Kwiatkowski stood with another coach, Jim Bernhardt, listening. After O’Brien spoke, something started to happen.

“Here's what happened after that,” Kwiatkowski says. “It wasn’t so much in sequence because some had already spoken. Every senior that got up after that -- and by the end of it I’m going, ‘Wow. What’s going on here?' -- every senior talked about Billy O’Brien and what Billy O’Brien meant to the football team. His humor, his intensity, his leadership, his example. And every kid had a story about how Billy made the team better and how Billy made them better.

“I said Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Jimmy. Who is that kid?”

Makes you want to....

As more coaches get hired to fill out the remaining vacant coaching positions, the happier I am that we fired Kubiak early and went after O'Brien.

I like Lovie Smith and he's a great coach in my opinion, but I think we got the best guy available.

One thing for sure, we'll get a good idea of who OB is by who the Texans select at 1-1.

So much division over who to take, and the diversity between the options, will give insight into how he thinks.

I'm already tired of hearing about Opie and want a new head coach.

Have a guy in mind, here's his resume (click for larger):

As Opie's friend Fonzie would say, "this thread has jumped the shark".

ObsiWan, as an old fart you should recognize Thorn's age and his failure to recognize the difference........

Then again, maybe not........
don't hate us because you have yet to achieve the enlightened status of Old-Fartness, as we have...

....perhaps one day you shall, young Grasshopper

Sometimes it's difficult being as wise and good looking as we are, but me and ObsiWan manage. Being smarter than all the half baked young folks on this board amuses us. :)

Apparently we don't count JB unless we've reached that SIX number.... uhg... I'm ok with that :)

OR we could argue that all of y'all are stuck in their ways, old geezers who have been passed by...no?

I, too, am sticking with O'Brien or Bill O'Brien. I like the guy so far, but, I don't feel connected to him yet enough to refer to him by a nickname. Dude's gotta earn that.

Another reason why I can't stand the 610 morning guys. They couldn't wait to start running with the nickname.

Lopez even called him by it...."thanks Obie." He must think they're drinking buddies already.

LOL - I am sure he lays awake at night contemplating what he can do to earn the right to his existing nickname.

I was never a fan of "Kubes". It's silly to me.

But, to each his own, I guess. Count me in the camp of "O'Brien", regardless of what the players, fans, and/or media wants to call him. I do not find it to be that much more work to type out his name.

Never liked the name Kubes, never called him that. Hated it.

Ironically, I always thought "Kubiak" would be a cool name for a dog. Thought about getting a second dog several years ago, and the name Kubiak was on the list of names. That was back when I liked the guy. Lol.

Let me ask you a hypothetical. Say you're at work, and they just hired a new employee that will be working with you everyday. You're introduced. His name is Bill O'Brien. Now, common courtesy will eventually lead you to say to him, "do you go by Bill, or how do you prefer to be called?" and if his response is "Most people call me OB", would you continue to call him 'Bill' or 'O'Brien'?

Is that a strawman? I don't think so.

You're right about the silliness. It's a disease, I tell ya.

Eh - Regardless of how things go, by the time Coach O'Brien's tenure with the Texans comes to an end (hopefully many, many years from now) he will have been called lots of things he would prefer not to be called.

Yeah, I know that. I just find a little comical how "we" attach nicknames to everyone, be it a coach, player, or whoever, at the drop of a hat, but if someone actually has a nickname to begin with, it's like "How dare you! I'm the only one that deserves the right to give you one, so until then, I will address by your 'proper' name!"

F'king please.

Hypothetically, I would know him personally and would call him whatever he wants to be called.

Reality, I don't know Bill O'Brien personally and will most likely never meet the man, so whatever I call him is irrelevant.

I don't really care what other fans or whoever call him. "OB" is not bad. At least it is something real in the man's life.

That said, he's O'Brien to me. :howdy:

Didn't know where to put this but according to Jason La Canfora the Texans fired director of Pro Personnel Brian Gardener.

While true, I'll probably call him by the preferred OB while he does well and that Damned Yankee when he doesn't.
