Texans hire Bill O'Brien as HC

That ring is not on O'Brien's finger, yet, my friend. ;)

NFL owners can be pretty ruthless, and the fact that we are closing on Tuesday and all we've heard are rumors of flirting makes me wonder what the heck is going down on Kirby.

The way the media was acting last weekend had a forgone conclusion that a deal would have been announced by today.

Why does this remind me of the Toyota commercial where the lady says she hit the jackpot again .

Bob walks up to Kraft and says I'm looking for a coach . Kraft asked if Bob's seen the O'brien ? He's smart , tough , and a great guy . Bob says , wow ... looks like I hit the jackpot again as Carr walks up with a puppy .

My gut is this is a done deal, and that there is a contingent deal in place. The contingency is BOB talking to his sons doctors in Penn, to ensure everything will work out for his son the way he and his wife want. I could see McNair allowing him time to do his research to make sure it's a good move for his son.

That's near red-rep territory there Sir. There's absolutely no room for cognizant, rational thought expression here. This is a knee jerk, Eeyore, woe is us, we're ex Oiler and now dreg Texans fans from Houston thread. There's no way something as reasonable as what you offered above has any reason to be in this discussion.

Makes perfect sense to me though. :)

You're probably right. The son angle is one I had not thought of, but it makes a lot of sense.

I'm just anxious like the rest of us, and certainly hold a bit of apprehension in my genetic code as a Houston football fan. I'm not a believer in curses, but sometimes I wonder if my teams are jinxed.

Wait for it...

It might have more to do with the Three Stooges taking up residence at Kirby Dr & Reliant Parkway. :)

And there it is! Normalcy has been restored!

Another theory floated out into the twittersphere:

Bill O'Brien is due $836,065 bonus if he remains at Penn State through 2013. Perhaps that is holding up his move to the NFL.

11-5 in 2008 with Matt Cassel anyone?

He isn't anywhere near the wizard without Brady. You are talking about one season that was right after Brady broke the record and Cassell caught fire because most teams didn't have tape on him. Cassell wasn't all that bad of a QB either though. He had some success in KC, but it wasn't long term.

I follow the Patriots almost as closely as the Texans and BB is not a good GM at all. He has total control over there and hasn't turned that defense around into a great defense in so many years now. That organization has forced Brady to make lemonade out of **** lemons for years. It's been the offense (Which BB doesn't control at all) that has made the Patriots this dominant team for the last 8 years or so. BB is a great coach and I'm not saying he isn't, but he gets vastly overrated for a lot of things because Tom Brady is his QB and Brady is a lot more prepared than even he is when they go to meetings according to BB by his own admission. BB has stated on multiple occasions how hard it is to coach Brady just because it's hard to keep up with all of the information that Brady brings to their meetings which is something he has never experienced with any other player.

Right, Said Fred....

It was a statement of humor. However the there may be some actual truth in the comment, "It might have more to do with the Three Stooges taking up residence at Kirby Dr & Reliant Parkway." :) Based on the performance of the last 12 years, great football minds, it's not. May be why you didn't think it funny. Either that or just no sense of humor. :)

Because it's so easy to start an expansion team in the NFL.

Not saying they didn't make mistakes, that is apparent, but football players are hard to predict.

Wish I could do it, I'd be a hell of a lot richer.

What do you think of Belichick's resume before he was made New England's Head Coach?

At least he had head coaching experience that included a playoff appearance and a playoff victory and he had a pre-existing relationship with the owner, having been an assistant coach under Parcells when he was at NE.

So we should have gone with Lovie?

Damn.... actually, since the Texans have yet to even announce a press conference, perhaps there is still hope.

Not much...until I saw an episode of "A Football Life" on Cleveland '95.

Belichick was clearly improving that team, and there is no telling what could/would have happened if Art Modell hadn't torpedoed that season with his sudden announcement to move the team.

The funny thing about the infamous coaches: they all seem to have HoF QBs.

Like Texecutioner mentioned, Belichick is what he is because of Brady.

Look at history. Bill Walsh had Joe Montana. Jimmy Johnson had Troy Aikman. Vince Lombardi had Bart Starr. The list goes on for the dynasty teams. Even though Terry Bradshaw gets maligned, he's still HoF and led the league in passing one year for Chuck Noll.

So, who knows? Whoever we get as HC will ultimately live or die by his QB.

So we should have gone with Lovie?

To be honest, the more I think about it the more it wouldn't bother me. Dude coached a team with Rex Grossman at QB to the Super Bowl. That, to me, says something positive about the coach. And since they lost, he's probably still be hungry to get back and redeem himself.

Is Bill O'Brian a hot commodity simply because he wasn't terrible at Penn State? I'm trying to get excited about him but New England coordinators haven't been successful as Head Coaches and O'Brian only went 15-9 at PSU.

He was a hot commodity last year. There's no evidence to suggest he is a hot commodity this year. However, considering he was highly sought after last season (I think he was offered the Eagles' job but turned it down) & Penn State did not regress, the assumption is he would be a hot commodity this year.

But since McNair pounced on O'Brien, & they obviously hit it off, no one else made an inquiry... that we know of.

Another indication that it's a done deal.

I might as well go ahead and get this out of the way, Gary Kubiak is a better offensive mind than Bill O'Brien.

all jokes aside welcome coach hopefully your stay is a long and fruitful one for everyone

Gary circa 2010 maybe, but the NFL caught up with the West Coast, ZBS, Scripted Offense. Today's NFL requires something new. I liked Gary and wanted it to work, I held on too long, but I wish him the best. I'm going to throw my support behind the 3rd HC of the Texans, besides 3rd times a charge!

So is there any word on if he will be bringing any of his penny state coaches with him? I really hope he hires quality assistants.

I'm actually excited to have his family in town as well. He has a great family. But the fact of the matter is I think he can win here. And call me crazy he just might, MIGHT be able to get something out of Schaub for one year.

I was answering the question not stating a preference. I'm fine with O'Brien.

And I see on NFLN that it's apparently official! Yay!

Schaub's issues are as much physical as mental . Cant fix weak arm and slow .

Hope this turns out good. Really a lot of people are on the fence about this hire. However I'm sure McNair has done his due diligence, it seems each coach has been better than the previous one in our short history.

Cool, good hire. Outside of Cowher or Gruden, O'Brien was my hope for the job. Look forward to seeing how the QB develops under his guidance, whoever the QB may be.

McNair got his man. I hope he turns out to be the coach that can turn this franchise into a dynasty. I'm good with O'Brien. Hopefully a good staff will follow.
