Texans GM Interviews...

We seem to have pulled a U turn on the process and it’s a pleasant surprise.

Everything was pointing to a search committee of Cal, Jack, pancakes and Watson finding a HC and allowing the HC to find the GM.

Some point along the line it seems Cal has made the sensible move of hiring some really good names to help the search, they are looking at GMs first, and will then look at HCs from there. This is how it should be.

I have no idea what to make of the actual candidate being interviewed. Philly have had some good teams in recent years.

Yep. I really hope this is indicative of a fundamental change on Kirby. I'm hoping that Cal is an owner that hires a GM and then expects him to do the heavy lifting like a traditional NFL franchise power structure.

All I want for Christmas as a Texans fan is for Gangsta' Cal to be real.

JMO: At least he knows his limits. The conversation that Tony Dungy talked about on Dan Patrick's show was informative. Cal asked him how to find a GM and what to look for. This tells me that he is listening to people a lot smarter than himself about football operations. Some owners have egos too big to ask such simple questions for basic knowledge. I respect it.

This isn't brain surgery, look for guys that have a track record of being successful before like Dorsey/McCloughan who have a track record of success or a guy like Wolf who's well connected around he league.

The other way you could go is get an asst GM/Coach that are connected like Dodds/Eberflus (SP?) I just want the dysfunction to end.

Can’t say I disagree. What are tour thoughts on the possibility of Louis Riddick being the Texans new GM?

I dont know him or how well he's connected around the league.

I really want a guy who knows what he's doing when he walks through the doors down on Kirby and doesn't need much of a learning period.

The state BOB left this franchise (Not all his own doing, Hopkins trade) in and the mess that needs to be cleaned up is going to take a well connected guy to succeed even after 2-3 yrs.

It might not be brain surgery but we haven't got it right yet

I know little about him but what I do know leads me to hope that Detroit gets him. Surely we can do better? Why would we want anybody associated with teams like Washington? I just don't get that.

Riddick really was Director of Pro Personel with the Eagles during the last years of the Andy Reid era. Those were not anything to brag about. He has family in the NFL and had been on ESPN for awhile so he has connections, but would be a new GM without a great track record and has not even been employed in a front office for 7/8 years.

Thank you google, wikipedia and speed reading.

Cal should be able to do better than this.

No, but he has another interview IF we don't hire him. And based on reports, the Lions will snag him if we don't. Which I can see forcing Cal to snap judge. I don't know if I like or dislike him as a GM.

Yeah I read that and do not see why anybody would want this guy or even why he got an interview? If he is the type that is being referred to Cal McNair here we go again...

I think I'm moving Dorsey to the top of my personal list.
He's been there and done that, with a track record of identifying and acquiring talent.
I'm probably not as concerned as I should be about his history of being fired quickly.
But I think he can build a roster, so I'm good with rolling the dice

From what I can tell Dorsey's firings seem to be about how he gets along with people over his talent evaluation or the overall team results. Considering how committee oriented the Texans have been, might be something to watch.

Just glancing over all of the drafts he presided over he definitely nabbed some top players for both the Chiefs and the Browns' current teams, but his draft history isn't as stellar as you would think given his rep for talent eval..no great track record of hitting on guys in those middle rounds. 1/2 of the talent he acquired for both teams came via the draft, the other 1/2 came via trades in FA....& this is where he's gotten into some trouble; he is extremely aggressive in FA. He was part of trades that netted Jarvis Landry, Odell Bechkam Jr. and Jabrill Peppers..as well as picking up Kareem Hunt off the scrap heap after KC released him. Given that our draft capital is limited, i'm not sure how he'd fair here...at least at the outset.

The counter balance to this though is that Dorsey's never come into a situation where he had the main pieces in place like he would have with DW4 & Tunsil. if all he has to do is fill out the roster with productive starters just to get us moving in the right direction in 2021, he might be worth bringing in imo.

I want more than just a roll of the dice. We have got to get this right.

I was not at all excited about the GM candidates until I heard about the Riddick interview. I'm really hoping we hire this guy.

Dude knows his football.

I don't feel like his qualifications are a roll of the dice.
I think his qualifications are very strong and justify rolling the dice on any interpersonal baggage that he seems to have

I believe the Texans are so messed up at the moment, I just don't like the idea of handing the reins to a couple of rookies (GM/HC) to straighten this shite-show up. If they can't overcome the existing mess it'll put this organization back another 3-4 seasons while trying to find a new GM/HC to do the job. If a tandem of Dorsey/Harbaugh enjoy the success they're known for over a 3-4 seasons, then the Texans ship could very well be righted and in great position to hire up and coming rookies (GM/HC) to continue moving the team in the right direction.

A poor man's Mayock?

Mayock was a draft analyst who had no managerial experience and neither did John Lynch, the 49ers GM, he was in the booth before they picked him out of the blue in 2017 and what happened 3 years later? They ended up in the Super Bowl. Now, they probably they didn't sign him right away because I think the Texans are going to wait until after the regular season to announce that they are going to hire him to make sure like Detroit, Atlanta or Jacksonville doesn't steal him from under their noses. But, knowing the Texans they'll probably find a way to get in their own way and mess this up

Problem is if Cal likes him but isn't sure. The word is that he will be hired for the GM job with the Lion's. He has an interview with them I think Friday. So IF Cal is thinking about it... he has to make an offer ASAP. Otherwise, the Lions are going to get him. Based on the reports.

They both played and have both spent time doing football tv.

But between wearing a helmet and potentially leaving the booth for the front office Mayock was selling real estate while Riddick was learning as a young scout and executive.

A rich man's Mayock, maybe?

From just a lowly fan's perspective, I would figure that networking is a huge part of being a GM. And Riddick is certainly plugged into the network matrix as a player, tv analyst, and front office executive.

And the interpersonal baggage that you speak of is a concern that I don't think we need after dealing with O' Brian. Why would you take that chance? We are very early in the process of selecting GM and head coach.

So Texans have contract to keep other teams away or are just hoping?

Man I hate to make a decision when I feel like I'm over a barrel

The other problem is how Jack Easterby will be involved in the process? Because if Easterby is interfering in the every day aspect of running the team nobody's is coming here. So, that's my concern.

How many championship teams has he been a part of building? Honest question

If I were one of these guys looking at Easterby, thinking this guy was able to wiggle in close to McNair with some double talk and minor football knowledge...

I mean first it was Kubiak’s way, then it was Rick’s way, then it was BO’bs way, now it’s Easterby’s way... I know it’s going to be my way next.

I am gonna say this now. I hope whoever is our next GM/HC are minorities.

I havent been particularly impressed with the majority of our picks at either position. :kitten:

Not like there have been a lot of either... 3 & 4
One of each being OB

My only real problem with Dorsey is his selection of Freddie Kitchens as the Brown's HC in 2018. There was nothing on Kitchens resume that screamed NFL head coach. I'd like to hear his explanation of why he made that decision.
Wiki has him listed as RB & Associate HC in 2018 before being promoted to interim OC. So maybe they saw him as a developing HC. When they fired Greg Williams, maybe they had to push things up faster than they thought & decided, “Well, the tried & true method didn’t work bringing in Greg Williams, let me ask Baker what he thinks?”

I would also like to hear his explanation of what went wrong in KC. Dorsey and Reid have been friends since Reid was the OL coach in Green Bay. One of Reid's sons would even baby sit Dorsey's kids. You would think that their partnership in KC would be perfect/aligned. Yet, he was forced out of KC. Are rumors of his abrasive style and lack of communication skills true? One example given is that he cut one of Andy Reid's favorite players (Jeremy Maclin) and didn't even give him the courtesy of a phone call. He simply left a voicemail for Maclin. Who cuts a player by voicemail?

I think Dorsey did a great job building the Chiefs' roster. It's a red flag that they didn't think enough of him to keep him around to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Williams was just the interim HC after Hue Jackson was fired in season. Actually had a winning record that half season (5-3), though no one in their right mind would have kept Gregg Williams as the HC.

I think one of the reasons Dorsey might have picked Kitchens is that Dorsey didn't want there to be any question about whom the Big Dawg was in the organization. Dorsey was #2 in KC, and that cost him his job. I don't want a GM's insecurity influencing the selection of a new HC. Pick the best guy, period. Then, build a relationship with him.

The more I think of where this organization is, the more I think there needs to be 3 new hires. Yes, a new GM and HC. But above them, there needs to be a real head honcho. A buffer between the team and ownership. A real football guy that knows what he's doing and has the gravitas to lead a winning organization. Like a Tex Schramm was for the Cowboys back in the day.

Both the GM and HC report to Head Honcho. No power struggles. No politics. No interference from the McNairs. If the McNairs are serious about winning (and making $$$), and not using this franchise as a hobby, this is the way to go.

My thoughts on Dorsey are that in order to navigate through the current mess, we will need a return to a build through the draft mentality, at least for the next 2 or 3 years until the cap situation is truly fixed. That’s going to take a lot of discipline on a team with glaring holes on its roster.

A guy with Dorset’s experience should be capable of adapting to the situation, but he’ll need to leave this aggressive FA mentality at the door, need to fix the foundations before we build for a championship.
