And sometimes people have rubbed him the wrong way, but I digress.

The one failure of this draft was no IOL. So, I see three possible solutions...such as they are. In order of most > least likely:

* Play people mildly out of position - Howard, Ersery, or Fisher are all tackles that could potentially play guard. Out of the three, Howard is easily the top candidate. The other two feel like stretches to me, and feel like true tackles that could do it in a pinch. I feel this is the most likely outcome.

* Pick up another asset via trade or FA. I mean Brandon Shreff is still out there. He's aging, but I don't think he's aged enough for that to be the concern. Is he asking too much? Has he fallen off the table? Maybe there is another Joe Mixon type of trade available. Nick is very good at calling people and seeing who might be available.

* Go with the guys they picked up in FA/drafted over the last couple of seasons that are true IOL players, cross your fingers, throw a bulb of garlic over your right shoulder, say 13 hail Mary's, put your left foot in, pull your right foot out, turn it all about and do the hokey pokey, and then pray to the football gods and ask for mercy.

It's going to workout.

Also Trent Brown has played OG. Ersery can also play OG IMHO.

I'm fairly confident that the team no longer views Howard as a tackle

I agree. If Trent Brown recovers from his injury, I sure would like for him to nail down RT, allowing Howard to slide to LG, where I think he'd be better than Tomlinson. Fisher could learn behind Brown.

And that leaves RG. We have no experience here. Our prospects have no more than 3 years of experience and except for Scruggs, limited playing time. Now Scruggs, the Texans have played him all over, at RG, OC and LG. This may be good experience for the long term, but the Texans need to stick him at RG and let him settle in there. And Broeker, I don't know if you noticed, but last preseason, the Texans had him at RT, then in limited play during the season, had him at RG. The Texans need to leave him at RG and let him battle it out with Scruggs. Who else do we have? LaDarius Henderson and, a real wildcard, newly acquired Jake Andrews.

The team used FA and trade market to add bodies at IOL. There was not a plug and play IOL outside of 1st round and the last one went off the board at pick 24.

The team decided to draft the best players on their team because they feel better about the veteran options they added. I would prefer to have former 2nd rounders like Scruggs and Ingram battle for a spot with their time in the NFL as added experience than a day 3 rookie this year. Also add Jake Andrews into that mix, I don’t see an IOL day 3 i’d prefer over him this year factoring in his time in the NFL to reduce the learning curve.

I forgot and left out Ingram in my comments. Yeh, he'll be in that competition for RG.
 
It's possible we see Andrews at OC and Patterson in the mix battling for RG, backup OC
 
Andrews didn't play last year (IR) and had only 71 snaps as a rookie. He played well at small school Troy against that level of competition, and although he shows developmental promise, he's up against it to make the 53 this year. He should make the PS and the Texans will just have to risk him being signed off the PS. But it's unlikely that we'll carry more than 10 OLmen, so unless there's injuries to open up a spot, Broeker and Deculus likely has the edge for the 10th spot.

Why would you prefer Scruggs/Ingram?

Scruggs looked like shite last season at LG….took a seat….moved over to RG. Pierce had his best rushing game (19 Carries 176 Yards) in the NFL with Patterson at C, Scruggs at RG, and Fisher at RT. The right side was creating some running lanes and definitely did on Pierce’s 92 yard TD run.

I hope the Texans come to camp with Scruggs penciled in at RG and Fisher at RT. With all the new veterans added in free agency and as UDFA’s….this OL shouldn’t have anyone handed the starting job. When I mention “penciled in”, it only means I’d prefer to see them competing for the starting job at those positions. I’m really not interested in seeing Scruggs competing for LG or C b/c it hasn’t worked out for him. The only positive I got from him last season was at RG, and he looked as though he could excel at the position…even if it was a small sample. In my book, it was enough of a sample to see how he grows if this is where he’s lining up from the start of camp.

Agreed. One of the biggest mistakes by the team last season was putting Mason back in at RG before the Chiefs playoff game.

If healthy ( Doubtful) you don't realize how good Trent Brown is.
 
I would like to see Trent at RG and Fisher remaining at right tackle. Brown good handle the short space quickness of the phone booth especially on the Run and Fisher I think would be quicker riding the arc.

Fisher has to be a lot better than he was last yr, or he shouldn't be starting.
 
Stephen Jones talks about the trade back discussions with Houston. Pretty much says that they wanted a "2nd and a late 3rd". I've heard rumors that they deemed the offer from the Texans as a "lowball". And some rumors that the Texans came up a bit but ultimately Dallas just decided to stick and pick. Makes me think that Caserio offered a 2nd and a 4th from next year's draft and wouldn't budge a whole lot off of that. Another Dallas guy intimated that the Texans mostly just wanted to give up future compensation.

So essentially the Texans would have traded Higgins/Ersery for Booker. Texans traded a late 3rd to move up for Ersery. And they gained that 3rd from the trade down in the 1st. So really Higgins/Ersery/ one of Noel or Smith.

Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don’t make.
