Texans General Draft discussion

I need Ratledge and Noel today Nick. Don't understand all the love for Higgins. looks slow on tape to me. We already have 2 of him on the roster in Xavier Hutchison and Jared Wayne. Noel's , faster, quicker and overall more athletic than Higgins & We need more twitch and explosion opposite Nico.
I still say sign Elijah Moore and focus on other players in the draft.

I'm so gutted we missed out on all of the lineman I was really interested in.

Agreed, gave myself a night off to cooldown... It didn't work. All I can hope for is to get a G, developmental LT (Charles Grant), and WR through some manipulation of the current draft picks. Short of that stockpile all of those picks through trade-up to get to get Kaydn Proctor in 2026... [and that will never happen.]

There's a reason he's still out there on the FA market in his prime years with all those older WR's. He's a malcontent. Forced his way off the jets and apparently he wasn't good enough for even the Browns to want to hold onto him.

Noel reminds me of Steve Smith....Amon Ra St. Brown type. Smaller, compact but strong and explosive. He could really fill that Tank Dell role...except he's much bigger and stronger than Dell ever was.

Give me a Steve Smith all day.

Yep. Then throw in LBs like Schwesinger and Knight. Texans can really throw a dart and get a good football player here. If they go luxury pick it’s a planning for the future move and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I’d be ok with Schwesinger learning behind Azeez then taking over to be DeMeco’s next Fred Warner for example.

And as we know, injuries happen so if you have a guy rated first round, go get them. Good players tend to find a way onto the football field.

Guy like Scourton, yes you have Anderson and Hunter but DeMeco rotates. If Scourton is Karlaftis with better pass rush he’ll find a way to impact this team.

Revel same thing. If he’s good enough to get on the field with this secondary that’s a problem for opposing offenses.

This team is going to win or lose based on its defense. Just like last season (but hopefully offense is improved). Offense just needs to score 20 and win the turnover battle, it’ll be a done deal.
Schwesinger and a DT like Collins would make this a great defense.

I’d be happy with any of these guys.
My Day 2 board:

J. Higgins*
J. Noel
J. Bech

OG
J. Savaiinaea*
T. Ratledge
W. Milum

Q. Judkins*
K. Johnson

Defense

N. Scourton
B. Swinson

DT
D. Alexander
TJ Sanders*
A. Collins
V. Broughton

* = 1st choice

I would have been OK with drafting Conerly at 25, but I don't hate the move back for more draft capital. Conerly was one of the 30 visits, so I guess Nick wasn't impressed.
I love all the draft capital that we’ve obtained.

If we don’t draft an OT this year I’m okay with Robinson as a stop gap. I’ve already looked at next years OT class and there looks to be quite a few good ones. I think we could trade up to get our future LT next year.

I think we can grab an OG on day 2. Nick has plenty of capital to move up.

But I am also eyeing Proctor next year!

Agreed. I’m sure their board was Banks and Booker for trade up. Maybe Zabel and Egbuka given him comments about a possible upper teens trade up.

Golden and Donovan Jackson might have been stick and pick at 25 candidates. And when the Texans were up to pick the team traded down because the value of the trade down exceeded the value of the players on their board.

I hated not getting Jackson at 25, but i’m ok with it given the tra I khde down. Plenty of players that will be picked tonight who will help this team!

This Draft is working out real good, personally speaking.
Thing I usually don't drink any beer during the week but weekends are just the opposite !
So for us Texans fans the Draft hasn't started, not 'till tonight, one of my fav beers nights,

I really like Kyle Williams to be that guy. But I like Higgins better than you do. He’s a poor man’s Nico Collins. I’m good with any of these receivers that Nick likes. There’s a good 6-8 that have a chance to do something in the league.

JMA's Big Board for the Texans

Best options at No. 34
1. Luther Burden III, WR, Missouri: He had 86 catches for 1,212 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore in 2023. He's 5-11, 208 pounds and one of the top receivers left. Could be the Texans future No. 2 receiver.
2. Mason Taylor, TE, LSU: He's the son of Hall of Famer Jason Taylor. He's 6-foot-5, 256 pounds and figure to be a weapon in the passing game. He had 55 catches for 546 yards and two touchdowns in 2024.
3. Nick Emmanwori, S, South Carolina: One of the top players left on the board. He could have gone in the first round but dropped. He had 88 tackles, four interceptions, including two he returned for interceptions during his final year at South Carolina.
4. Nic Scourton, Edge, Texas A&M: Began at Purdue before transferring. He had 12 sacks in his sophomore season, and five as a junior with the Aggies. He's 6-4, 285 pounds, and could be the future replacement for Danielle Hunter.
5. Jonah Savaiinnaea, G, Arizona: Addresses arguably Houston's biggest need at guard. Played right guard at Arizona and is one of the better players left on the board.

Options at No. 58
6. Tate Ratledge, G, Georgia
7. Jaylin Noel, WR, Iowa St.
8. Jack Bech, WR, TCU
9. Tre Harris, WR, Ole Miss
10. Alfred Collins, DT, Texas

Options at Nos. 79, 89, 99
11. Kyle Williams, WR, Washington St.
12. Cameron Williams, OT, Texas
13. Charles Grant, OT, William & Mary
14. Joshua Farmer, DT, Florida St.
15. Elijah Arroyo, TE, Miami

I’m not saying it’s the most important thing. I’m saying I’m comfortable with the draft capital we got. I think we will find at least 3 quality players that contribute right away. I’m saying I’m comfortable with Robinson as a stop gap instead of reaching for an OT that they aren’t sure would be a team fit.

I’m really looking forward to seeing who’s going to be a Texan after today.

I think I mention this every year, but just sharing again for those interested:

PFSN updates the picks as they are made pretty quickly in their mock draft simulator. So you can simulate different scenarios with how the day might play out as picks are made.

I'm having fun with this. At pick# 34, I accepted a trade down to #54 from Green Bay which gives me GB's 2nd and 3rd in 2026. We'd have three 2's and three 3's in 2026 when we may have some cap casualties. Then after simulating picks down to 54, Higgins and Savaiinaea are still available.

And based on reports, the Texans are receiving trade offers right now.

The most important thing about this years draft is next years draft.

Agreed. They are well-positioned to stack this roster with good talent on rookie contracts when the bill comes due for some of the talent that will outplay themselves out of town. Then the comp picks will begin to become a thing here…

• The Browns and Houston Texans, the teams with the first two picks in the second round, were in discussions on trades with the teams at the bottom of the first round Thursday night—and the belief is their mutual target was Oregon OT Josh Conerly Jr.

Obviously, any hope of that dissipated when Conerly was taken 29th by the Washington Commanders, but it does inform you on the chance that either team targets the position tonight.

It had to hurt for both teams not to get him, with the dropoff that’s apparent at tackle after five went in the first round. The next group includes Boston College’s Ozzy Trapilo, who’s considered a low-risk, high-floor type of player, as well as Minnesota’s Aireontae Ersery and NC State’s Anthony Belton, both of whom carry some football-character concerns.

• I’d expect Houston to be in the receiver market at some point, too. The Texans made late efforts to trade up Thursday night, and there’s a belief that their target was Ohio State WR Emeka Egbuka, who went 19th to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Tennessee Titans (whom I’ve heard connected to Missouri’s Luther Burden III) and the New England Patriots are also looking at receivers, which could push guys up a little, with Burden, Iowa State’s Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, TCU’s Jack Bech and Savion Williams, and Washington State’s Kyle Williams in play tonight.
