Texans General Draft discussion

Will there be a surprise player who slips out of round one that you did not think would? Also, is there a surprise player who will be selected in round one that few expected?
 
Where do you rank Blake Fisher with this year’s tackle class? I think as a prospect he’s just behind Conerly. But if he had played for Notre Dame this season with his measurables/tools he’d be right there in the mix with the big 3 imo (Campbell, Membou, Banks).

Something to consider when determining where and when to draft this season. Players are supposed to improve with NFL coaching and offseason S&C. They’ve got a lot of young talent on the OL. In theory they should be a step ahead of a day 2 or 3 rookie OL. Not impressed with this OL class after round 2. As much as we want to complain about who they’ve added to the OL and the lack of marquee names… they are vets. And that experience I think counts more on the OL than other positions. Very hard to be a good starting OL as a rookie, they take their lumps.

I’m not saying skimp on OL. I’m saying you need to add a blue chipper if you want a day 1 starter added to this line with what they’ve already got. They added plenty of quantity in FA/trade market. Now they need quality.

The Texans could look to their offensive line and add a guard who has the potential to kick outside to tackle. They're rebuilding their protection in front of quarterback C.J. Stroud. This isn't an attention-grabbing pick, but it's a sensible one in this draft.

▪Some execs have pegged Ohio State's Josh Simmons as the best pure OT in the class. "He probably had the best tape of any offensive tackle," a personnel director said. Teams I've checked with aren't overly concerned about his recovery from a torn patellar tendon.

▪Several teams are anticipating a run on RBs at some point. North Carolina's Omarion Hampton could go earlier than expected. An executive said he believes Denver (No. 20) could be a pivot point for running backs. "I think [Hampton is] the best back, and I think that's who Denver is targeting," the exec said. Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson could also go earlier than most think. Enough teams have him very high on their RB board, meaning late Round 1 isn't totally out of the question. Contenders such as the Texans, Chiefs and Commanders are looking to improve their ground games.

▪It's always fun to ask teams for their sleeper first-rounders -- names that would be a mild surprise to the common fan but not necessarily to those in the draft rooms. Here are a few I've heard: South Carolina defensive lineman T.J. Sanders, Minnesota offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery, Ohio State guard Donovan Jackson and East Carolina corner Shavon Revel Jr. (Kansas State corner Jacob Parrish and Texas A&M defensive lineman Shemar Turner are deeper sleepers mentioned for Day 2.)

Which teams could make trades?

Fowler: …The Texans (No. 25) are calling into the top half of the first round to potentially move up. While their target is unclear, one NFC executive predicts Houston is interested in Texas' Banks, trying to solve a clear need at offensive tackle. Teams behind Houston are also hearing from GM Nick Caserio, so it's possible the Texans are just doing their due diligence across the board. The Broncos (No. 20) are also looking to move up, as Adam Schefter noted. And while San Francisco (No. 11) has been linked to trade rumors, there isn't much buzz around the 49ers making a move as of now. If San Francisco targets defensive line, the 11th pick is a good spot to find someone.

Fisher was disappointingly bad last yr. You cant count on him to improve. Trade up and get banks, if Fisher improves then the OL will have a chance to be really good. If not then they will still be much better than they were last yr. Of course they need to stay healthy.

They're saying Howard is in the best shape of his life. Competition helps with this.

IMO I feel like Nick is working the phones to start some baseline conversations, both up and down. If your a GM that likes to maneuver your pick it doesn't hurt to have some known contacts already in place, but I don't think that means he's dead set on either option. It also give a little intel into what teams are actually going to do (ie. Another GM says I'll consider the trade if player X isn't on the board.)

I actually watched some college game film again to compare Fisher to Banks/Conerly/Grant as a LT. I will say that Fisher's footwork is just a beat slower (not irreparably so) but he does have a power advantage. I'll also say that I feel like Conerly looks more like a LT than Banks does. (This won't go over well with steelbtexan but the more I look at Banks I feel like he struggles with length and punch for an LT. He let's pass rushers get into his body consistently, without getting his arms extended to keep them at bay and get his hands set. I'm somewhat tempted to put him as a G prospect.) I still like Grant, but I think he'll take 2 years to get ready to (successfully) play at LT.

Two thoughts, first is the aforementioned idea that Caserio is laying the groundwork for any potential deal which seems prudent. The other is that if these rumors are coming out of Kirby than Nick wants them to be known.

Exactly. don't know why people get so wrapped up in hearing this kinda stuff so close to draft day. Especially when you know that the biggest trade this franchise ever made just 2 years ago, absolutely NOONE saw coming.

What you're saying is true if you watched the 2nd part of last yrs tape. He was slower than normal because he was playing on a sprained ankle. Go back and watch his 2023 tape against Alabama and WA/Dallas Turner if you want to see what a healthy Banks looks like. Last yr a healthy Conerly looked like the better LT prospect because he was healthy and Conerly is very athletic/good in his own right.

I'm guessing he's predicting a trade up for one OL and a pick in rd 2 or 3 for another OL. Myself if the draft fell right I would fix the OL with trading up with Dallas at 1-12 and a 2026 1st, then if Jackson fell to say 2-40 trading 2-58 and 3-79 for Jackson.

Next yrs OL

Robinson/Banks/Patterson/Jackson/Howard, yeah that would work. Take the best WR at 3-89 and the best RB at 5-166.
 
If the Texans/Caserio were to invest 3 picks towards their OL, my choices would be:

DAY 1 Starter:
LG- Donovan Jackson (Ohio State)

Development Players:
LT- Jaylen Travis (Iowa State)
RG- Connor Colby (Iowa)

I've been saying Banks is best at LG. Two years is a good timeline for Grant. If we don't use a 3 in a trade, our second 3 would be the spot to use on a developmental OT.

I'm hoping they trade future picks to land 2 top 30 OL in this draft and fix the OL for the next 5-10 yrs. If they use future picks to trade up for Banks and decide to sit still and pick at 2-58 I would hope Ratledge and Milum would be on the table at that pick.
 
Reminder 58+79+89 = 1.28.

Another team in the low first round could also be interested in a trade for our 2026 pics. I would hope to hang on to pick one but if our two seconds , round 3 and 2 round four
Could get us a third round one or high round 2?

Browns and NJG could use our pics in a trade up package for Manning in 2026.

Either could offer 33 or 35 for some combination two round twos, one third and two of our fours.
Nick could go all in for 25, 28 and 33/35. Banks LG; Conerly LT and Egbuka or Higgins would be an attention getter.

Browns get 2026 2a plus 3 plus 4b for 2.33 this year.
Giants get 2026 2b plus 4a plus 2025 round 5 for 2.35 this year.
In 2026 both have huge offers to move up for Manning or Nussmeir.

Even Jets could get in on bidding.

I'd normally agree, but I'm just hesitant about this years OT class. And someone posted there are reports that Howard is in great shape going into the preseason. If I squint, maybe I can see Howard, Jackson/Banks, Patterson, ???, Fisher.

Again, rookie OL. And add in the fact he was in a terrible situation. Highly doubt a comparable rookie OT would’ve looked any better. But pretty confident he would’ve looked good at Notre Dame!

Rosengarten looked much better as a starter for the Ravens all yr.

Again, Fisher was playing on an OL that has been blown up and is being rebuilt for a reason. The OC was fired as well because he kept putting them in bad situations magnifying the overall suckitude.

But yes, Rosengarten played well in a great situation. Much better than the one Fisher was asked to play in. Good for him.
 
When looking at prospects at the skill positions I am thinking of guys who are “DeMeco” guys. Because I think Caley is a “DeMeco” guy and aligned on that front.

What I mean by that is they are team-first. Which means they run their routes 100% even if they aren’t the first read. They block when asked and not just laying a hand on a guy and getting into their route like Schultz. They BLOCK their opponent.

That’s why I really like WRs like Egbuka, Bech and Ayomanor. These guys can catch the ball. But it’s the little things that matter.

And a RB like Lequint Allen, same thing. If we want to see a successful screen game, everybody needs to do their part.

If we want to see 4 yards turn into 40 yard runs, people need to be blocking downfield and not turning into spectators.

The OL wont be fixed in one offseason. Adding junkyard dogs who can do their part at the skill positions will accelerate the process.

And a 2nd rounder. DraftBuzz had him as a developmental prospect. And he just turned 22 in March. If we're willing to give Grant 2 years, I'd expect the same for Fisher.

Honestly, haven’t seen enough or he hasn’t flashed traits that would give him a first round grade imo. Could be just developmental swing tackle? He’s played enough high level football to establish his position, but not there, yet.

So far Rosegarten has been the much better player.

Just saying and yet posters keep explaining away why. It could be something as simple as the Ravens drafted the better/more well rounded player. We will see next yr, but if Fisher doesn't play well I expect some to continue to explain away his failures and I was a Fisher guy when he was drafted and still think he can reach his potential.

Hopefully Fisher will have better veteran leadership to learn how to be a pro from with the new additions to the OL.

Fisher didn't turn 22 until March of this year. And I doubt they even expected him to play last season. But more competition can only be a good thing when it comes to this offensive line.
