Texans General Draft discussion

I just cannot get into Burden for some reason. I am going to continue to push Golden/ Conerly at 25 and the other one with a trade up. Two franchise type guys almost same age.. 21 and could give 10 good seasons at prime positions.
R B in fifth like Dylan Sampson or Benjamin Martinez.
6th round DT Nose Dez Watson as I don't want to lose him even if he could fall to udfa. Round 7 the best cornerback available. All needs met and with excellent prospects.
Burden is not good at the whole route running thing and was thrown a spit ton on short/screens passes to get the ball in his hands. Some of the draft rumor mills also have him with off the field issues

We know, we know. :P Why do you think he's so far down on most draft boards, the average is in the 4th round? (Honest question)

They don’t like his feet….me, I’m fine with his feet. What he lacks in dancing, he makes up with…with sheer length and power. Finish the coaching process b/c he’s got the rest of the tools already.

Just heard about this but keep in mind it is supposedly from a 2023 podcast clip. I pulled up that clip and could see nothing as it was a private video. Just posting for discussion. Let McMillan doesn't like football or watch game film.

A video clip from 2023 has Tetairoa McMillan saying he doesn't study film, or even like football. True or not, some things may be better left unsaid

I believe Caserio and Ryans have the horses they want on defense. This defense should be good to go on Day 1.

On offense….I believe Caserio, Caley, and Popovich approached free agency with the idea of signing inexpensive bridge veterans….and they got what they needed.

My feeling, Caserio, Caley, Popovich will look for long-term answers via the draft. I could easily see at minimum the first 4-5 picks used on OL and WR. This is the big draft need at the moment.

Looking forward to the draft.

Speaking just to the OL, how many makes the final roster?

Right now, tentatively, we have: Roberson (LT), Tomlinson (LG), Patterson (C), Ingram (RG), Fisher (RT). Then we have Howard, Scruggs and Brown. That's 8. Then for sure, we draft at least 1 OLman, in the first or second round, who'll make the roster. So now the question is, will a player we draft in the third or forth beat out a player already signed to the roster like Broeker or Deculus? Or will we be drafting for the practice squad?

All of them! 😁

Injuries and competition will sort this “problem” out. The team needs good offensive linemen and have to add them wherever they are available. This isn’t the DL where there is an embarrassment of riches.

I’d much rather worry about having to cut a good player (problem with the DL) than having to find a good player (OL issue).

Caserio will probably be able to trade a DT at the end of camp for a pick in 2026. Maybe 2 if he's able to trade Hinish.

I could see Caserio taking LG/LT- Donovan Jackson in RD1. Texans couldn’t seriously think Howard is suddenly the answer at LG. If Jackson is the pick….I think he beats Howard out by the first game of the season. I’d like an LT as well b/c I seriously doubt the team is happy and done with the signing of Robinson. He’d be okay if he’s keeping the position hot for his eventual replacement. I look forward to seeing how Patterson (C), Scruggs (RG), and Fisher (RT) gel after finishing the season nicely. Ryans and the offense screwed the pooch big time when they decided to start Howard at RG in the playoffs over Scruggs. Just didn’t make any sense.

My first 5 picks would be 2 (OT & OG), 2 (WR), and 1 (TE). Offense has to get healthy this season or the improvements on defense will be for nothing.

I think Nick and Demeco liked the improvement from Howard's 6 games in 2023 at LG to the 6 games he had in 2024. Pass blocking he was at 68 percent. If left there, he could be in the mid 70s. Use that pick elsewhere.

Are “you” sold on Howard being the 2025 starter at LG?

My eyes told me a different story.

I’ll be ready for my seasoned crow if my eyes told me a lie.

You know where I stand with Howard, LOL. I was the main advocate for trading him this last offseason. I'm just saying what I think the Texans are going to do.

Or it could be avg or worse.

You forgot LaDarius Henderson, OG (Michigan); last year's 7th round pick. Been on IR since July. Unless I missed him getting cut/taking an injury settlement

I don't see Henderson on the current roster.
Odd, no record of him being cut/traded/waived. Last report was from Feb. saying he was cleared after surgery (drafted knowing he'd miss all of last year). Caserio has mentioned him more than once this offseason.

So that's maybe 4 players that could be competing for the 10th spot, if they keep 10.

He is still on the ESPN roster for the Texans. Also, he is on spotrac and over the cap salary cap rosters. He signed a four-year contract and is still signed through 2027 at a peanut average of $1 million each year. I don't think he's going anywhere for a while lol.

#70 Ozzie Trapillo Boston College.

I have him as right tackle prospect has been compared to Fisher.

I disagree with the premise. Why would you draft a Tackle, if you have stop-gap tackles?

Well let's see: stop-gap (def.): something contrived to meet an urgent need or emergency. So by that definition, if you don't address it now, you go into next year needing another stop-gap, and so on, and so on.

I do agree that the Texans will probably get their future left tackle day two of the draft. But somewhere it was mentioned that they might like a guy in the 2026 draft.

This 2025 NFL Draft is the most dysfunctional, unpredictable draft I’ve ever seen in all my years. Doesn’t mean there aren’t some great prospects, just not at the usual, coveted positions, like QB.

Feels like after the blue chips fly off boards early, teams will be moving around a lot. Pivoting and stacking depth pieces. Wouldn’t bet on a LT slipping to 25 or a WR worth that slot.

I am becoming more and more inclined for the team to pluck off their favorite DT on the board at 25. Get a long term core player to continue having an elite defense. Will be really easy to be successful with the talent around this prospect and the coaching staff’s track record.

My top priority is getting one of the interior OL projected at 25 (Jackson or Zabel seen most i
often). Either way, strengthen the interior trenches.

But with DT you can really build a bully even moreso than they already have! Could you imagine adding a DT like Harmon to this defense? QBs are in the pressure cooker all 4 quarters!

Thing is Caserio won't have to spend 1-25 to get a really good DT in this draft. Although I would love to see Walter Nolan or Darius Alexander on the DL.

We have experience. Nolan is bigger than Houston own Ed Oliver, drafted 9th overall (steal). Alexander is right up Demc (no o for no offense) pipeline, think Darius Alexander #27 last year, but again, bigger, faster, nastier.

Of course, we all want a LT to replace Tunsil. Banks will be off the board (unless trading up) so know you like Jackson, could he be serviceable LT, by next season?

I don’t think it’s a given that banks is off the board at 25. Good chance he is a Texan if he is there, but nothing is assured. They may have another guy higher on their board. Nolan for axample.

Both Banks and Jackson are better fits at LG. Jackson may be serviceable at LT. Banks has a higher ceiling at the position and may be tried there by whichever team drafts him.

Why not trade down from 25 and get in round two both Donovan Jackson and Alfred Collins?

Or Josh Conerly...

Round 1 WR Matthew Golden
Round 2 OG/LT Donovan Jackson in trade up.
Round 3 LT Charles Grant 98 % run and pass blocking.
Golden is possibly gone by 25
Trading up is never a guarantee
Charles Grant is a small school guy, and Caserio ain't a fan of small school guys

Caserio has drafted plenty of small school guys in n his career. He has targeted big schools when drafting for the Texans but I think that’s mainly trying to create a culture shift. Less risk with big school prospects who have exposure to more pro ready facilities and coaching.

This is the vastly more relevant part, don't you think?
