Maybe I can email it to someone more familiar with this to post it if anyone is intersested. So much for a good first post.
I've been around these boards for a long time but never posted myself because I always wanted to avoid being the 'stupid first time poster.' During the VY/RB/Super Mario/D'brick debate it probably isn't the best time, but for the record I'm a big UT and VY fan, but I want Reggie Bush. While a fan of VY, I also love my Texans and want what’s best for them. That may be VY, but I think Reggie fits better. I also hope Vince lights up the NFL proving all his critics wrong and wouldn't even mind him going to the Titans, as long as the Titans go 15-2, losing both to the Texans. With all the local pressure and hype it might be better for him to go elsewhere despite how great of a story it would make.
On to my real point of my posting... THE DRAFT.
I don't think the #1 pick really matters, at least as far as whom. Get the best player at whatever position the Texan's feel would make the team better. Just my thoughts but let the debate continue.
My view of the team thus far this off-season:
Defense:
DT- should be very set with the conversion to 4-3
DE - Weaver/Kalu/Peek/Babin (not Drafting DE)
LB - Greenwood/Wong/Orr/? and the signing of Cowart, I think we are set there for the short term, maybe a late round project
S - Brown/Earl - weak at FS, might be a good choice for 2nd or 3rd
CB - Robinson/Buchanan - Anybody want an upgrade or competition for Buchanan? 2nd or 3rd
Offense:
OL - Pitts is a good LT, but should be better at RT. McKinney- potentially better at G. Flanagan- Good upgrade at Center and hopefully is huge in making Sherman’s line calls. The left 3/5 should resemble a real OL. On the Right side, we have the W's. Weary, Weigart and Wade. Plenty of talk about replacing one of these guys (or two) and it looks like a talented OL draft. Get Some OL Talent that fits Kubiak’s offense
QB - Not even going to touch this one (see ALL OTHER THREADS)
FB - Got Kubiak's choice for FB. Enough said for me.
RB - Have Davis, a good back that suffers from injuries and would benefit from a reduced workload, a tired defense from chasing Reggie and not to mention better line (pray that that works out!) ** In comes Reggie Bush with only size/durability questions for the NFL. He comes in and splits time with Davis to keep their number of carries fairly low, and will also slide out to the Slot to let them both on the field at the same time. Imagine... AJ, (#2 WR Mathis/Walter/?/?/?), Putzier, Cook and Reggie Bush on the field. Defense sets up for this, next play, #2 WR steps off as Davis replaces him, and Bush slides outside. Still have a dangerous runner in the backfield, many passing options, a great open field runner near the sideline waiting to get a step on someone or Putzier getting a mismatch over a LB with the attention towards AJ and Bush. Does the defense go nickel against a 2WR set with a good running back/NFL OL? I don’t think so. So who helps double AJ? Will one guy be enough to cover Bush in the slot? Do you chance a LB chasing Putzier into the flat or whatever hole behind AJ? Oh wait, if you have a NFL OL that can give a QB a chance…. Davis and Cook can catch out of the backfield too… While he’s not VY (please, please, please don’t respond to this, because there is no comparison) and Carr isn’t going to break any ankles, I like his chances of getting some positive yards if the D is spread out and effectively covering his targets. I like having weapons. That's my dream anyways.... Did I mention Bush simply running the ball and making the Texans fun to watch? How many Reggie Bush Texans jerseys has ESPN already sold for us anyways?
TE- Got Putzier and a good blocker. Maybe a later pick in a deep position
WR- Seems like everybody is crying for a true #2. Reggie Bush might be able to fill some of this need, we'll have to see, but at the least his presence should give whoever is there more opportunities. Get Moulds or draft a good WR the first day.
Most demanding draft needs: (imo)
-Superstar at #1 pick. Take your pick
-FS/CB to upgrade or challenge for time
-RT/RG to complete the line rebuilding (can we just get 3 OL with our 2nd and 3rd’s and not have to worry about the line again?)
-WR to take pressure off AJ, not to mention Carr. (If we don’t get Moulds in FA)
Chance has it through our misery this year that we happen to have 4 picks in the top 66, very close to all in the first 2 rounds. The Texans could pick a superstar, a DB, an OL and WR and fill our 4 biggest needs. Maybe not immediately, but the future at those positions would be solid.
I created a little draft chart for what I think the Texans legit first day options and draft board are, based on my opinions of need. My only basis of where a player might drop to is based on mock drafts and discussions here. Let me know of any changes I should make on it and I’ll try to get to it. My free time today is an oddity. Basically start on the outside, if the Texans take one of the 3 positions on the outside, follow the 2 arrows from it. Order of the 3rd rounders doesn’t matter since they are back to back. Of course if someone drops to us that should have gone higher, that could be another option.
This is my attempt at simplifying things. Rank the players at each position as you see fitting. I’d like to get feedback to get a better idea of whom to hope for and watch.
Player dependent, I think I’d go DB in the 2nd Round and enjoy the deeper talent that drops to the 3rd in the other two positions. Of Course Winston would be really nice. My predictions may be way off, but I liked the idea of graphically looking at it.
Make the offense dangerous this year and worry about defense the next two years. With an offense that can make a first down, new defensive minds/schemes and a couple of key positions upgraded the defense shouldn’t be near as tired and embarrassing by default. Right?? Please tell me it can’t get worse. Not to mention if we have a good offense the games will be fun to watch with us moving the ball and the other team moving the ball. No more watching a short run up the middle, an incomplete pass, David Carr helping out stadium maintenance by checking for burnt out light bulbs, and then giving our punt team extra practice and watching their offense walk down the field. If it doesn’t improve, maybe we can invest in a 2nd punter to rotate in to prevent leg fatigue. Defense may win championships, but we’re not close to that. Make the team better and then when good, get some big name defensive players to push the defense over the top. Wouldn’t it be fun to look like the Colts instead of… well the Texans? Dare I say I’m getting a little excited.
