Texans exclusive free agency news and rumors

I would think that The O-line instruction would not be on the head coach, but rather with the line coach. However, the head coach should be able to see if he is doing his job correctly and take action accordingly. Do we know if our line coach is someone who is well regarded in that capacity? If not, then there is likely the issue and should be dealt with. If he is quality, then the goods he is working with are the issue and that can take a season or two to rectify. Also, the idea of having to teach guys how to block at the pro level is very exasperating IMO.

He had one good year and then got demoted. I'm not seeing the progress.

Personally and without some kind of stat sheet....Mancz's 2016 season as the Texans starting Center was far superior to Martin's 2017 season as his replacement.

This is a trend at the moment with O'Brien and Devlin, they continue to act as if they've never evaluated an OL in their lives much less successfully coached one up to be better than when they arrived, especially when forced to play out of position.

he was an UDFA... nowhere to go but up. He was injured his first year and didn't play. His 2nd year he reverted to his college level that had him as best center in the draft and possible high round pick (IIRC)

If the coaches thought he was all that, Martin would have not been drafted
And what did Mancz do last season? They developed him and then F'd him.

Should've left him at Center.

From the Injury Thread [Feb 28, 2018]:
I keep on hearing the criticism of O'Brien not starting Mancz at C last year after his 2016 success. Let me see if I can't shed some light on what some call "stubbornness" on the part of O'Brien to utilize Mancz.

When Mancz arrived to Houston in 2015, he did not participate in mini-camps and OTAs because he was still recovering from the surgery to repair his torn labrum. He did not officially suit up for the Texans until training camp of his rookie season. During that time, he played both guard and center, which was a big plus given the versatility Bill O’Brien sought from his players. Making the initial 53-man roster when training camp broke, Mancz was active three games before injuring his knee in practice in late October and was placed on IR. Much like the 2015 season, Mancz arrived to 2016 mini-camps and OTAs rehabbing an injury, this time his knee. He performed admirably well in 2016, enjoying an injury-free status throughout the season.

Last season Mancz was not so fortunate injury-wise. In a practice prior to the week 4 practice, he re-injured his knee, an injury for which caused him to miss week 4, 5, 6, and would not have been able to play in week 7, but this was the Bye. He tried to play in limited capacity in week 8, but his knee kept him out of week 9. He then tried to return again in week 10, but was again limited by his knee, but then not only aggravated his knee, but also sustained a re-injury of his repaired shoulder.........leading to him missing week 11 and 12. These 2 injuries dogged him the rest of the season.

It should be mentioned that although he was not on the 2017 Injury Reports prior to the week 4 practice, his knee was already giving him problems again by TC.

Have you seen an OLmen get better under OB's OL coaches?

Not once. It's time that this version of the Texans go out and spend whatever it takes to find an OL coach who is damn good at his job and bring him in to fix this mess just like Kubiak did with Alex Gibbs. What we had before Devlin wasn't working. What we got now isn't working. We need to bring in an expert and fix it.

Also (not related to your post that I quoted, just putting it here) I don't want Dez Bryant's selfish, diva ass anywhere near my football team. That guy is not going to make the Texans better.

Should have taken a shot at hiring: https://247sports.com/college/notre...estand-headed-back-to-Chicago-Bears-113517100

Alas, this is the day when most head coaches are administrators who depend on their assistant coaches to know football. The few teams that employ HC's who really know the game are the perennial champions.

Watch Giacomini become a good starting RT for the Raiders.

Devlin is not good. Why BOB keeps rolling with him while simultaneously going through ST coaches like I go through underwear is perplexing to me.

As Herv stated, when Alex Gibbs came here to work with Kubiak, he got the most out of that line. I feel like basically every single lineman they have is not playing up to their potential.

I think it goes to show the lack of talent at OT in the league right now. Nate Solder was made the highest paid OT in the league, and he’s never even made a pro bowl.
certainly but a no talent tackle to protect most important player....

Jeremy Maclin should be considered to come in and make catches out of the slot and over the middle to keep ball moving downfield. Short term deal should be struck.

There are some really good slot guys that can be had middle to late in this draft.

everyone always says this. nothing ever pans out for middle to late.

Doesn't pan out for most teams...but that's due to the QB. Welker, Amendola, Edelman all late round guys I do believe. A great QB can make undersized slow receivers look great if they can catch the ball

They aren't long speed fast but they are wicked short space quick. And they are schemed for that.
And THIS is what I mean by really good slot guys. If schemed right these guys can really have an impact. They are usually available in the later rounds because they aren’t big and don’t have super top end speed. There are several of these type guys in this draft. Hopefully we can land one late

I still haven't gotten into the later rounds of the draft as much as I would like to so would love to see a few names to keep an eye on.

The Texans run game needs an identity. Are they zone or are they power? I wish they'd just run the ZBS and stick to it.

I would really like them to draft a slot WR with a track record of production at the position. No more experimenting. Braxton Miller may finally “get it” and same with Bruce Ellington. But if they do will they stay healthy?

My pick for a late round productive slot WR that the Texans have shown interest in is Richie James. The most productive WR in Middle Tennessee St. history!!!

There are ALWAYS plenty of these guys 5'10-6' ish 180-200 ish quicker than fast dudes. Picking through and getting the one or two a draft season who is actually a legit NFL player is the issue (and just for the Texans)

Rather get a new body taking those reps. Change of scenery needed.
Exactly, somebody who might have the potential to make a long-term contribution to our Oline after proper development and also be an adequate reserve
since each roster spot is very valuable as there's precious few of them.
The X-man has got to be one of the Texans greatest Draft mistakes because he was such a high pick and there was so much talent to choose from besides him in what was
a very strong Draft.

Kayvon Webster was released by the Rams. It wouldn't be a bad idea to pick him up as a corner back. Need more depth in the secondary. Good free agency move.

Webster is coming off shoulder surgery and a ruptured achilles. Not sure I trust the Texans medical staff on a player like that.
Would not touch him. He suffered his Achilles rupture last Dec. Throughout last season, he played with both a significant shoulder labrum tear AND rotator cuff tear. Playing through both only led to extending both structural tears. With his Achilles surgery being in Dec and his shoulder surgery on 2 months later (while rehabbing his Achilles), his 2018 season if not his career may be in question.

Hope that the Texans medical staff realizes this.
