New Staff
The first thing you look at with Houston is the new coaching staff. Gary Kubiak comes in from Denver to be the 2nd Head Coach in Texans history. Along with him comes the West Coast Offense and a 4-3 scheme on defense. GM Charley Casserly is still in town, so I wouldn't expect scouting philosophy to change drastically, other than players fitting the new schemes. If there is one thing Kubiak might take from Denver it would be to wait on running backs and offensive linemen in the draft--pretty much the opposite of what most think Houston will do in April. Casserly had this to say about the switch to a 4-3:

“It’s affected it in reverse. What I mean by that is in the fall a lot of these 250-pound defensive linemen we just wrote them off as linebackers and if we didn’t think athletically they could play linebacker, we just kind of put them to the side.

“Now we have to go back on some of these players and redo them because they don’t have to play linebacker. We’ve had to convert some our scouting grades from the fall into a new system.”

Offensive Needs
For as bad as the Texans were in 2005, they have talent on offense. The front office is standing behind David Carr and thinks he can flourish in the WCO. A lot of that will depend on his ability to take a 3-step drop and get the ball out quickly. That should cut the sacks in half--a weak offensive line isn't the only reason Carr has been getting sacked a record number of times. In fact, the offensive line in Houston is probably underrated and has produced a solid running game. A franchise left tackle wouldn't hurt, but don't expect too many early round picks along the offensive line. Kubiak knows he can get athletic, workman-like players with later picks and develop them, as was the case in Denver and most WCO teams. Gaffney and Bradford have both moved on, so depth is very thin at WR. A #2 guy to go between Andre Johnson and Jerome Mathis would be ideal. There are rumors that Houston may make a run at signing RFA Nate Burleson from Minnesota, giving up a 3rd rounder (not a bad deal) as compensation. A traditional pass-catching tight end is a must too. Like WR, there should be good value at TE through the early 4th round.

Day One:
OT, WR, TE

Day Two:
OG, FB, TE

Defensive Needs
The defense was worse than the offense in '05. Prior to the signing of defensive end Anthony Weaver from Baltimore, I would have listed strong side DE as the #1 need in Houston. Now it looks as if they have a starting unit intact--albeit a lackluster group. Babin and Peek are a fine rotation on the right side. DT is pretty deep with Paine, Smith and 2005 draft pick Travis johnson. Bottom line is somebody has to provide a passrush. Linebacker is another group that has depth, but could really use a stud to build around. The defensive backfield has Dunta Robinson and basically nobody else. Phillip Buchanon is a castaway from oakland and the group of safeties are mediocre at best. Expect at least one DB on day one and probably a free agent starter too.

Day One:
S, CB, MLB/SLB

Day Two:
LDE, CB, LB

Day One Prjection
Round 1, pick #1
Reggie Bush, RB, USC
I don't love this pick for Houston. I had them taking Mario Williams in my latest mock, but it seems, with the signing of Anthony Weaver, that they are looking elsewhere on draft day. That leaves Reggie or a trade down for D'brickashaw Ferguson. Super Mario could still be a possibility in that scenario. Runningbacks are a dime-a-dozen and Domanick Davis could be a stud in Kubiak's offense. Thats not to say Bush wouldn't succeed--just that he isn't necessary. One thing is for certain, Bush will be huge in fantasy leagues. His cutback burst should create tons of big plays. If it's between Bush and Ferguson, do yourselves a favor, stay put and take Reggie. Not a big fan of Ferguson and OT has value throughout day one.

Round 2, pick #33
Donte Whitner, S, Ohio State
OT has value here, but it should in the 3rd as well. Defense must be addressed. There will be a DB available here. Which one is uncertain, but my best guess with the most value will be Whitner. This guy has 4.4 speed and can pack a punch as well as cover. Whitner should provide a much need presence in centerfiled.

Other prospects I like in this spot; Ko Simpson, Jason Allen, Demeco Ryans, Ernie Sims, Pat Watkins, Ashton Youboty, Kelly Jennings and Jonathan Scott.

Round 3, pick #65
Daryn Colledge, OT, Boise State
Colledge fits Kubiak's offense like a glove. This guy could be a huge steal here. He's a very good pass blocker that could play OT for years. He is also athletic enough to play guard and do everything asked at that possitions. Either way he should stay on the left side. Honestly, I dont think there is much drop off from the overrated D'brickashaw Ferguson to the underrated Colledge.

Round 3, pick #66
Gerris Wilkinson, MLB, Georgia Tech
Linebackers tend to fall on draft day. Wilkinson is the total package at inside linebacker, but doesn't have the hype of others in this draft. He's smart, has good size, can run sideline to sideline, and bring the wood. A great addition to the future front seven in Houston.

Other possibilities in the 3rd round; Devin Aromashodu, Maurice Stovall, Todd Watkins, Freddie Roach, Greg Eslinger , Andrew Whitworth and Joe Klopfenstein.

Id add Richard Marshall to the other possibilities in the 3rd, and Nick Mangold to other possibilities in the 2nd.

I like the Picks. I am a bit "wary" of Donte Whitner though. I mean..he looks great, he has good physical skills.. he isnt afraid to hit (which I like in a DB).. and he is a ball hawk. What I dont like..and this is more of a "superstition" is that he isnt really a lock at FS. What I mean is..he could play SS, FS, or CB. Ive just seen heard about too many "tweeners" like this that come in and dont excel at any of their possible positions.

I wouldnt be unhappy with the pick though. He is an intriguing prospect, and could end up playing CB or FS for us.. both of which are need positions. (He will most likely go to FS though)

It seems as though a lot of the DB prospects are projected at a few positions....just to name a few

Michael Huff
Donte Whitner
Jason Allen
Cedric Griffin
Jimmy Williams

They all have talent, its just you have to put them in a position to maximize it rather than to just fill a need...but a multidimensional DB never hurts as a lot of injuries come down during the year

i think it was a good analysis of our needs(except him saying we need a fb). dont particularly like any of the 2nd or 3rd picks- but agree that it looks certain we'll take reggie now

We need Reggie Bush

I would trade the #1 overall pick in a NY minute to the Jets for their 1st rd. pick next year, #1 pick this year (#4) & their 2nd this year (#35) then select A.J. Hawk & hope Mangold slips to the 2nd.:)

Beerlover there is no way I pick AJ Hawk with the #4 pick considering who will still be around. Bush, Ferguson, and Williams are the top non QB guys. Now if we went to four, most people are pretty sure and the Titans are saying they will look to address QB in the draft. They can end up with a stud at 3 leaving Saints and Jets to pick Bush, Fergy, or Williams. Hopefully in your scenario Bush goes to the Jets, and the Saints take Fergy leaving us with Williams. Also the Jets could just trade me their first next year, and 3rd this year and if I thought I could still get Wiliams I take it.

Colledge will not be there in the 3rd. If you want to secure the OT spot (most imporant in this draft) you need to use #33 or trade 65&66 to move up.

no way the Texans need to draft another defensive linemen with the 1st pick two years in a row. even though Mario seems like a great prospect we now have in place our line, what we don't have in place is a competent core of LBs to run the 4-3 and A.J. Hawk is the one player in the draft who could walk into camp take the position via skill & leadership never looking back.

for trading down & giving up Bush I would need the Jets #1 & #2 picks this year as well as next years #1. As far as taking Hawk with the 4th pick, I would be scared to let him slide to the 5th, 6th or 7th picks, the last thing you want to do at the top of the draft is to get cute and lose your man, just look at what happend last year.

just wanted to update A.J. Hawk's 40 time from Ohio States Pro Day- A.J. Hawk LB Hawk was clocked at 4.49 and 4.42 in the 40. and let it be known this is my own opinion and in no way reflects what I think the Texans will do, more like shoulda coulda, they always do something different :twocents:

This is the way I believe things should go for us in the draft:

1st: Draft either Bush or Mario. I think the best idea would be to get Mario, but I will not cry if Bush is the pick.

2nd: Select the best O-lineman available out of Justice, McNeill, Winston, Mangold, or Jean-Gilles. Davin Joseph maybe a reach here, I'm not sure. The O-line must be addressed and can't wait any longer, at least one of these guys will probably be available, get an instant started here.

3rd: With the two picks we have here two positions of either MLB, FS, C, or TE should be addressed. I'm leaning toward Kai Parham at MLB and possibly Greg Enslinger at C, unless one of the top safeties or TEs is available.

I think we should look to DE with our 4th beyond that we should be looking toward depth.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks we need to pick a WR at #33. This is a weak class for WRs and we could get something adequate in FA if absolutely necessary, think Ike Hilliard or Peerless Price. A pick shouldn't go toward WR until the second day in my opinion.:twocents:

If done properly this could be a very good draft for us. Let me know what you think.

Let this man keep going. I would love this draft if it happened. I'm starting to accept Bush now, but Whitner is my second favorite FS available after Ko Simpson. I like Wilkinson and Colledge.

If Colledge is available in the third round and we dont take him I am going to freak out. He would be a huge steal and the perfect fit for our team.

I like it, what about 4 -6, #4 A CB? or Chester? #5 BPA? Linebacker maybe #6 QB Prospect, wouldn't Reggie McNeil be nice here... He could work out as a WR and emergency QB.
