Ohio University cornerback Mark Parson may have been the one hand-picked by future Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders to come train with him at Prime U, a pre-NFL combine camp, but teammate safety Michael Mitchell is proving to be the crown jewel of the Bobcats' secondary.

The Cincinnati Bengals are among several teams wanting to get a closer look at the hard-hitting strong safety before draft day.

Mitchell will have a private workout with the Bengals on April 14 and on the same day will fly to Cleveland to visit the Browns. A day later he'll travel to Oakland to meet with the Raiders. Mitchell has met with at least four other teams since his Pro Day March 12.

The 6-foot-1, 221-pound Mitchell opened some eyes when he ripped it up at the school's pro day. He ran a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash and knocked out 22 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. He posted a 37.5-inch vertical and recorded a 10-foot-3 inch broad jump.

Mitchell was unable to perform the shuttle runs or do positional drills due to a pulled hamstring which he sustained during his first 40 run. The 10 teams in attendance apparently liked what they saw but want to see more.

That's where Ignition Athletics Performance Group in Mason, Ohio comes into play.

Mitchell appears to be another one of those prospects like UC's Connor Barwin who is training at Ignition and storming up team's draft boards. It must be something in the water there in Mason.

Clif Marshall, Performance Director at Ignition, has been working with the safety on position drills preparing him for his workouts with NFL teams.

"Michael is one of the most impressive guys that we've had here in our program," Marshall said. "When he comes into work his demeanor is all business. He attacks all his workouts and drills. The hamstring is good. He is committed to rehabbing hours each day and is a tough guy who will be ready for his workouts.

"Michael's combination of size, speed and ability on the field is what makes him an intriguing prospect. He's not one of these guys who will just test well. You have four years of film to watch him in action. I believe that's what makes him so attractive to teams."

Big C's scouting report

Mitchell is extremely physical and packs a wallop when delivering the blow. He's a sure-tackler, wraps up well, outstanding playing inside the box, can play deep middle or in zone coverage. He is fluent in his back pedal, smooth in transition and shows good overall technique.

Mitchell has very good ball skills and speed to play anywhere in the secondary. He has the ability to cover slot receivers and tight ends displaying exceptional cover skills. He's an opportunistic defender leading the team with three interceptions in addition to five pass breakups and two forced fumbles last season. He was also an impact player on special teams.

Mitchell is an explosive player with a linebacker's mentality, good study habits, highly intelligent and vocal leader.

According Bobcat defensive coordinator/safeties Coach Jimmy Burrow, Mitchell improved in all areas of his weaknesses throughout his four year career at Ohio. The coach describes Mitchell as being in the same mode of longtime NFL safety John Lynch with his playing style.

Improving stock

Once considered an undrafted free agent by NFL scouts, Mitchell's draft stock is on the rise and now has a legitimate shot of hearing his name called on Day 2 of the draft. I had one scout tell me that Mitchell could be a guy like Indianapolis Colts safety Antoine Bethea, who was a little-known safety out of Howard University, but was selected in the sixth round by the Colts in 2006. Bethea was an impact player as a rookie for Indy. The Colts are among the teams showing interest in the safety.

Although Mitchell wasn't invited to the Combine, he is being looked at heavily by teams as we approach draft day. Mitchell has earned the label as the best kept secret safety prospect entering the draft.

Question #5 If I were to ask your to name a defensive player that challenged your game, or brought the best out in you who would that have been?

In the Chrons Jeremy Rices blog, he interviews this outstanding Oregan State
Olineman and asks that question of Andy Levitre who doesn't name someone
he played in the Pac-10 (like one of those allegedly great USC defenders),
but Paul Krueger from Utah. Something for us to keep in mind, maybe.

The Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers, New York Jets, New York Giants and Oakland Raiders all interviewed him.

Levitre is considered a guard in the NFL and projects as a round 2 or 3 guy.

The Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings were just a few of the teams who requested a formal interview with him at the NFL Scouting Combine.

While he'd prefer to play on the outside in a 3-4 alignment, he's happy that he has been able to show the NFL scouts that he can play mulitiple systems and multiple positions in those systems. He didn't say if he'd received interest from his childhood team, the Minnesota Vikings (big Randy Moss fan), but he did workout for the hometown Oakland Raiders. The Raiders, as with many other teams he's talked to, were looking at him as a middle linebacker in their 4-3 scheme.

To tell you the truth man, I have not a clue. I've been having like, I mean two teams a day pretty much been calling me asking me for draft-day numbers to make sure they have each one. I'm kind of fired up about the Houston Texans. They called me and I talked to the scout, and he said, 'We see you as an outside linebacker, put your hand in the dirt, two-point stance, whatever it takes to get you getting to the quarterback.' So that's where they see me, you know, I think that's kinda' what I do best. It's good to hear a team finally, not try to change me, but let me do what I can do.

A guy I think that is flying under the radar big-time (I know Ole Miss Texan can attest to this too) is Ashlee Palmer. The guy is athletic as hell and was pretty productive for the Rebs. (Plus, I'm sort of a homer) If he ends up going late in the draft or free-agency, then I think he will be a tremendous steal.

A lot of guys just play football, play video games, and do their thing and that's about it. I kind of have some talents off the field as far as my wood-cutting hobby that I'm starting to push out.

Game tape trumps workout numbers 99% of the time. If he can't play, then I don't care how good of an athlete he is.

He has great measurables, but I want to see some tape before I make a judgment on him.

Because "Thatwould be an ideal safety for us" means that a safety would those measurables would be good concept.

I didn't say he was an ideal safety. As you can see i didn't even know if he was a strong or free safety so I didn't have much info on him to begin with.

We don't need no stinkin long-haired, hippy USC beach-boy LBs, especially when their price is our first round pick. On the other hand this Follett kid is total blue-collar, dang he probably works in the Bakersfield oil fields as a roughneck in the summer time when schools out, and we could get him in the third round.

I totally agree. Really under the radar and probably a late day 2 pick. I think he'd be a great addition to our LBs. Whenever I watched the games, I always focused on Jerry/Hardy on defense and Oher/Snead on offense. Palmer was a guy that just kept showing up though. Could be kind of like Diles... 7th rd pick that ends up getting a break and making the most of it. He'd be a great fit for SLB, he can cover the TEs, shed blocks well, can blitz and really just plays the LB position how it's supposed to. I don't think he would "wow" anybody but he would do exactly what the coaches want and be a guy that makes other players better strictly by doing his assignment.
