Texans can lean on Bush; Mathis is another story

One of the dumbest things we've heard leading up to this weekend's draft is that running back Reggie Bush isn't big enough to carry 20 to 25 times a game.

First of all, no running back who rushed for at least 1,000 yards last season averaged 25 carries. Edgerrin James, who rushed for 1,506 yards, was the only back to average 24.

Shaun Alexander, the NFL's leading rusher with 1,880 yards, averaged 23.1 carries. He was the only other back to average at least 23.

For all of those who think Bush is too small, the evidence shows that you may have to think again.

Why would Bush put off weight to run faster on a track, when he'll have to carry the extra five to ten pounds at his playing weight? Isn't the point to get bigger and faster? It kinda seems to defeats the purpose...
 
I think Jerome Mathis must have killed John McClain's puppy.

I can almost hear him spitting in disgust. I imagine that if he spoke these words, he would sound like he did when he completely overreacted about McNair hiring Dan Reeves on Sports Radio 610.
 
Bush was not that good of a returner in 2005. He average 17.6 per kickoff, and 9.9 per punt. One TD on a punt return with a long of 84. His longest kickoff return was 30 yards.

I am amazed at how much his return skills are touted. There are many propects in the draft that did or could have provided those type of numbers in 2005 and scouts are not going to include their kick returner skills as additional value with regard to draft analysis.

Bottom line with Reggis is how much he is going to cost and the player we will be giving up (like Ferguson or Williams). Proven Pro Bowl running backs have a hard time getting the kind of contract Reggie will be getting. NFL teams right now are reluctant to paying a premium for running back. You can make all the comparisons to other backs, but Reggie will be making a lot more money than those other players, and with a salary cap, that is extremely important.

We already have a #1 pick quarterback and #3 pick wide receiver, and soon to be a #1 running back that is a once a generation. I don't hear anyone saying we are going to win a shootout with Indy, because it appears that our team is going to continue to be offense heavy with regard to talent or attention.

If they take Reggie, they are going to have to make the later rounds in this draft work because they are leaving themselves less lee way in filling out the interior lines on both sides of the ball. This team has several needs that are more important than another running back that will be extremely expensive.
 
Im inclined to agree with McClain on the Mathis issue.

I have been hearing about Mathis' attitude problems all offseason.. the motorcycle accident was the straw that broke the camels back.

I wont be buying a Mathis jersey.. he is on his way out unless he turns over a new leaf real quick.
 
Thank god someone realized Bush isn't a great return guy. And just think, he was working on USC, who has the best backups in the country with their recruiting the last few years. And he is returning against 2nd team PAC 10 defensive players. Anyways, who in their right mind is going to sign your franchises new #1 offensive weapon for $20 million+ and then run him up the freaking wedge? Everybody in the media is being completely retarted on this point.

Sometimes good things come outta bad situations. Young guys (and oldens for that matter) make mistakes and usually my thought is that maybe close calls can end up preventing something worse down the road from happening.

We should all be glad that the mistakes that we have made relating to our first big jobs don't make the newspapers.

I am just glad it doesn't seem like he is seriously hurt, and hopefully, this can be an experience that he learns from.

I am not sure what sorta return guy Reggie would be, but if we choose to use him in that way, with Marciano coaching, I am guessing Reggie would do pretty good.
 
Mathis is an electifying player who has changed games in the past and will probably continue to do so in the future. Mathis is very inexpensive right now. Mathis does not have to be a full-time receiver to earn his check - his kick-off game breakers do that for him. Limited time as the 4th wide receiver is enough.

It doesn't appear Mathis is a disruption to the rest of the team, or at least that hasn't been slung up against the wall yet.

I'd give him a chance to mature as long as he's not hurting the team chemistry with his attitude.

By the way, where is all this "patience" fans have been proclaiming to have on other threads?
