Texans Add Another (FB Jameel Cook )

Running with it: The Texans added a fullback in Jameel Cook of the Bucs Saturday in what could be adding to an enhanced backfield.
Domanick Davis is the starting running back but the Texans are looking at drafting Reggie Bush with the first pick. The signing of Cook gives them a blocking back in what should be an enhanced running game.
The Texans will decide in a month whether or not to draft Bush or take quarterback Vince Young.

I personally think that's not that bad of a pick-up. I like it. This can only help DD, Morency, and hopefully Wells comes back.

Reggie is going to need someone to blast some holes through the line so he can get in the secondary and score some touchdowns.

Not sure if you were sarcastic or not, but I do not understand this line of thinking. We draft Carr and possibly Bush knowing that they need other parts to be successful? There is a salary cap. If the #1 pick in the draft can't get it done then trade out or draft someone like Mario Williams that can make a difference on his own.

Regardless of what they do about Bush, this could be a sign of Davis/Morency at RB and Wells not being re-signed.

Last time I checked there aren't too many 1 player teams. Every player drafted needs supporting pieces to make them better. Adding a good blocking back is important to this team because he would not only block for Reggie Bush, but for Domanick Davis and David Carr.

By your logic, a team shouldn't draft anyone at the #1 position.

Im more worried about what this says for Wells.

The biggest selling point for Wells was that he could provide depth at RB and FB while performing well on special teams.

With Cook and Norris..we dont need Wells for depth at FB.. and if we draft Bush, Wells is less valuable there as well.

I wonder if we intend to try and keep Wells or not.

I really want to know how talks with Gaffney are going.

Hell Yes we signed someone.:yahoo: :redtowel: :fans: :texflag:

The former Buc. I remember when he scored a touchdown in the Buc vs. Skins game Bucs won 36-35 on Alstott TD. Nice game to watch at the time cause all the other games were like 9ners vs. Cardinals

A bit of a head scratcher this one. I thought Norris was supposed to be one of the better blocking FBs, so why this guy? Some injury to Norris we don't know about? Any thoughts?

Bingo! Look at #1 picks since the institution of the salary cap era in 1993. Only one player started for a winning Super Bowl team that drafted him, Orlando Pace. We are better off taking Williams or Ferguson than a skill position.

I am confused as well.

Norris can't catch.

Kubiak plans to use this guy like he used his FB at Denver last season. Kyle Johnson (Denver's FB) had 5 TD receptions.

Even Williams and Ferguson rely on other players for their success.

If you have the #1 pick you take the best player in the draft. That player is Reggie Bush. You may not think he is, but you are not a GM, scout, or coach.

I must be in some parallel bizarro universe confined within a trapezoidal prison.

The only way this makes sense is if Kubiak needs a more versatile FB who can catch. This must be the end of Wells- no big loss IMO. He was always too slow for a good RB and to small to be an impact FB. He wasn't known for his catching ability either.

Huh?--Wells is 252 lbs--the same size as the two pro bowl FB's Mack Strong and Lorenzo Neal. Cook is 237 lbs.

Don't know much about the guy but man we are active today and I'ma lovin it!

The Houston Texans have agreed to a contract with unrestricted free agent FB Jameel Cook it was announced today.
Cook (5-10, 237) played in all 16 games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past season catching seven passes for 43 yards. His lone touchdown in 2005 was a historical feat. In Week 16, Cook caught a nine-yard score, the 900th touchdown in the Buccaneers’ 30 years of existence. Throughout his career Cook has utilized his hands as he had a career-high 20 catches for 120 yards in 2003.
Cook, a sixth round pick in the 2001 draft from Illinois, was a major contributor on the Bucs special teams, finishing second on the team with 23 tackles. He had a season-high five special teams stops against Detroit.

In respons to Dunta23's question about his special team ability.

We are going to be a running ball club and we are going to have some WCO elements...so that means your fullback needs to block and catch the ball well. I never figured Wells would be back....even more so now. Wells isn't a very good run blocker.

While I think all that is true, it makes me scratch my head because we already have Norris for a fullback and he is supposed to be a top level run blocker. Are we keeping two FBs? On first look that doesn't make much sense, but I suppose there could be a way to use them. If we cut Norris, then it would make sense to keep Wells. Just not sure how this is to play out.

Dunta was on the ground through the timeout while Johnson trotted off the field. Yeah, I guess he really lit him up. I will give Dunta credit though, because the rest of the team had already quit and he was still flying around in the 4th.

I have watched a lot of Buc's games over the years and while Cook isn't great, he get's the job done. He is a pretty good special teamer. A pretty good reciever out of the backfield, and a pretty good run blocker.
I like this signing.

Of course, how could I have forgotten..... There was #8 with a Bowie knife clenched in his teeth, his jersey ripped open at the chest, hair blowing in the wind, urging his teammates to follow him across the battlefield ....

For a running team, this is a good pickup. This guy is a Lorenzo Neal type guy. Not sure about his pass catching, but should be able to blow open holes.

Last year I think the only thing the team was trying to cross was the finish line, as in put a end to a dismal season. Teams that have nothing to play for usually shut it down, especially when they know their coach isn't going to be returning.

Well I hope they keep Norris along with Cook. Wells can go elsewhere cuz after the cook signing we don't need him. Morency needs to step up as the backup, and if we take Reggie Bush, then these five would be a good backfield for us. (I consider both Davis and Bush as starters at RB).

Norris could be gone and we could resign Wells. Wells can back-up Cook, play ST and be an emergency back.

i could see him signing with a team that will give him at least the chance that he got in 2005.

For now it sounds like they plan on keeping Norris, he is a better blocker but isn't as athletic and probably isn't as good of a runner as Cook, but then again we haven't gotten to see Norris get a chance to run the last couple years here. I think Wells is gone, the Texans don't sound like they are overly concerned with resigning him and there isn't much reason to pay him very much money at all, we could find a 5th-6th round RB in Riggs or Humes that actually run with power and are cheaper than Wells. If we do draft Bush, I think Morency or Davis (likely Morency) will be gone, and I've heard Morency somewhat implied he'd ask for a trade if they got Bush rather than sitting as our #3 RB and not seeing the field. From purely a talent standpoint I'd probably rather keep Morency, I think he's the same type of RB as Davis but a little bigger and faster, but we have Davis locked in with a pretty big contract so it would be harder to move him and we'd take a decent cap hit for trading him and he's proven to be productive, so I think we'd keep Davis, look to trade Morency, then have Bush and Davis as our feature RBs and Cook and maybe Norris as FBs.

looks as if we are trying to bolster line in FA not only looking at Flannagan but Hallen from SD
Ht: 6-4 Wt: 305
Position: OG
Projected as: OG
Position Rank: 10
Date of Birth: 3/9/1975
Experience: 8
High School: Mentor HS
(Mentor, OH)
College: Kent State

Biography:
Bob Hallen is a versatile player that displays good awareness and quickness. A sound technician, Hallen is solid in his recognition and positioning. Speed and quickness are critical to his overall productivity, as he is not a physical lineman and has trouble with the bigger defensive tackles when not in position or beaten to the point. Plays through the play and will finish blocks, even on the second level. Nutten has showed some signs of slowing as he does not change direction well, but is still a better than average player at this point of his career.
Worthy of a 2-3 year deal?

Texans | Contract update: J. Cook
Sat, 11 Mar 2006 23:15:46 -0800

John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans FB Jameel Cook signed a five-year, $5 million contract to join the Texans Saturday, March 11. Cook will compete with FB Moran Norris for the starting job at fullback.

ESPN.com reports the Houston Texans have agreed to an undisclosed contract with free agent FB Jameel Cook (Buccaneers).

He was a solid back up and excellent ST player for 5 years here in Tampa. I think with Alstott getting his deal done, Cook realized he wasn't going to get a starting chance or much opprotunity in this offense so he decided to move on.

Might be a good goal line weapon!

Obviously, our brilliant GM still has his fingers in the Pie. With the Texans in dire straights, desperately in need of quality personnel on both sides of the ball, we sign a Fullback. A position most NFL teams are eliminating (and for good reason).

Hey Front Office! Here is your shopping list (in order of need) from a fan that has attended every home game the Texans have played (if you can call it that…): Offensive Left Guard, Middle Linebacker, Offensive Right Tackle, Tight End, Cornerbacks (2), Strong Safety, Running Back.

Don’t even think about keeping your first pick. The Texans could have Bush and Shaun Alexander in the same backfield and still yield another 2 & 14 season.
