Free Agents to Re-sign
I think that it’s a given the Texans will do what they can to re-sign...

Free Agents to Let Walk
Kareem Jackson had a good season, but given some of the salaries that went into the position last year and lack of available talent he’ll be...

Contracts to Modify
This is the final year of...

Players to Consider Releasing
Andre Johnson wasn’t happy with the Texans last season and his production began decline...

Offseason Plan
The Texans had a nice season last year, but between playing in an easy division and having the new coach honeymoon year they shouldn’t stray from...

All of our division competitors have much more cap space than we do, so they likely will land more talent in FA than us,and therefor we'd better have a really successful Draft this year for the first time in 3 years.

Roster Reset: Winners and losers in free agency

"Winning" or "losing" free agency guarantees nothing. Tampa Bay, #1 winner. Dallas & Carolina -- playoff teams, losers.

While this is a better FA class, gotta find the right fits. I generally like what I see from Jags front office -- cannot say same for Colts and Titans. (Trent Richardson, anyone?)

Agreed and the Texans also need to hit on a couple of low priced FA's like Niles Paul/Virgil Green/Davon House to fill holes so that they can build on last season, in addition to the draft. I fell better about this with Gaine in charge of player/personnel

Disagree. Large cap space does not equal more talent in FA...just more spending in the FA market.

" That should prevent them from a total collapse if they can’t find a QB that is as productive as Fitzpatrick"

I've just spewed everywhere on a train at the thought of that prospect.

Don't get me wrong, Fitz was a steady hand on the tiller especially in comparison to expectations, but this could be a loooooong wait for a decent QB if we don't pull a starter out of training camp that can at least match Fitz's production off the bat (with plenty of room to grow).

Matt Schaub's best years could seem like a woken dream compared to what the Texans have in store if they draft a Locker, Ponder, Sanchez. Hell they could even end up going after Sanchez if they don't find a quality starter. Pray that Mallett is our man

They have more space than we do because they don't have anyone worth paying.

NFL notified teams today that it expects this year's salary cap to be between $140 and $143 million, at least $1.5M higher than projected.

Reference signing:

LT King Dunlap 49th on PFT's top 100 FAs - 4 years $28 mil.

Derek Newton is 75th.

I say Texans sign everyone to one year contracts only, then they'll start each season with the max cap space possible. That's the measure of a good GM according to you, right?

Not quite, a good GM plans as much for the future as he does for today, if not more so. That includes not having your back up against the salary cap wall for the last 5 years that allows for little or no room for improvements except through the draft.

Teams were informed today the salary cap will officially be $143.28M, per source.

More information about each individual team's cap/cash status avaialble later today. Every team but the Rams elected to carryover cap space.

Why wouldn't the Rams want to carry over cap space?

NFL informed all teams today that this year's salary cap will be set at $143,280,000 per club, per source.

The $1.78m credit came from:

1. Credit for the $1m roster bonus for Johnson from 2014 hold out.
2. Credit for offset guarantee for Clemons (~$128k).
3. Credit for Graham's roster bonus, played less games in '14 than '13 (~$31,250).

Still working to find out the rest. May be credits for R. Brown and E. Mack not taking termination pay in 2014. Or insurance money return for missed games on Cushing and Foster in 2014.

Jaguars $167,924,507 Salary Cap
Texans $145,464,146 Salary Cap
Chargers $142,411,012 Salary Cap

Why the difference? Shouldn't a level playing field be - level?

Carried over money from last year. Next year they cant exceed the cap unless they have some carry over again.

Basically makes teams spend in addition to the cap floor.

so say we trade A Johnson, how does the contract work? What part of the contract are we responsible for?

We'll be an extra $8.8M (give or take) to the good. Trading Andre, or cutting Andre, or renegotiating Andre's contract is good for the Texans.

Or, he could be a June 1st cut... Which would save about $13 million under this years cap and $11 million next year.

If that's where we were, that's what we'd be talking about. Instead, they're telling Andre to look for a trade... so that's what we're talking about right now.

Can't use the June 1 designation unless Dre is released after the new league year starts. If he is released prior to 3pm on March 10th, then will all accrue in 2015.

Players to Consider Releasing

Andre Johnson wasn’t happy with the Texans last season and his production began decline. He’ll be 34 years old and the team frees up nearly $9 million in cap room by moving on. Johnson should still have some trade value provided he is willing to rework his contract, but if not it is probably best to release him and move on rather than overpaying him for the final two years of his career…Chris Myers has had a nice career, but with a $8 million cap charge there is no justification for keeping him. He is better suited to a different offensive scheme and the team saves $6 million when they release him. They could wait until after the draft to make the cut just to ensure they have another lineman…The Texans were prepared to stop using Ryan Fitzpatrick last season and they can save $3.25M by moving on. His job was to get them through a season which he did. They can explore trades with a team like the Jets but I would expect Houston to try one of the younger guys this season…Releasing Tyson Clabo saves $1.22 million.
Pretty spot on so far.

Pretty spot on so far.

I've been watching the Ravens game the past couple of nights after class. Clabo is horrible. Brooks went out, Newton slid inside with Clabo on the outside. I questioned why we kept him over a couple others after TC. This game refreshed my memory for how bad he is.

The Dolts have made some highly questionable decisions .... if those bastards didn't luck into Luck they'd be hot garbage. Sure must be nice to go from Peyton Manning to Andrew Luck and the only price you pay is one horrible season. We should be so lucky ..... but we're about to go into season 3 of .... who's your quarterback ?!
