Texans 2015 Free Agency

Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock
DaQuan Bowers played DE and DT in Tampa. He'd mostly likely be a 5 tech opposite of JJ Watt in Houston, if signed.

Bowers was most people's #1 player coming out of college until an injury set him back (sound familiar) . Slid to 2nd round of the draft.

Like Jadeveon Clowney, Bowers played high school ball in SC and was the nation's #1 recruit at DE. 1/2 of the Bamberg Bookends w/ Ricky Sapp

Texans showing lots of interest in UFA DE DaQuan Bowers. Miami also has reached out. Tampa wants him to stay.

Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock

Hmmm... Bowers is very talented but he just hasn't lived up to that.

OTOH, he could be an upgrade over Crick and with the right coaching, he could start to live up to those expectations people had for him when he was drafted.

And playing opposite of Watt? That could be just what he needs.

I'm not against this signing as long as they don't pay a lot. I doubt he'll come here, though. I think the Dolphins or Buccs will pay him more.

Rick is going to have to become a better salesman than he's ever been in the past if he's going to land Maclin/Cobb... mo money, mo money, mo money just isn't going to do it. They can get the money they're looking for from several teams. Some that are better opportunities for their careers as well.

He doesn't have to be a better salesman. All he has to do is add more zeros than he other gms.

So we're ok with overpaying guys now?

Which I was thinking. I'd be ok with overpaying a FA or two if that leads to getting us over that hump. If we overpay McCourty, Cobb, Vareen to get them here & we're struggle to end the season 9-7 on the outside looking in, I'm going to be pissed.

Just like paying Fitzpatrick $4M to do what Yates or Keenum could have done.

I feel like we have absolutely no shot at him. Philly wanted to pay him less than he wanted and save some cash so he choose FA.

However, they cleared about $30M in cap space this week and I'm quite positive Maclin wants to stay in Philly and that they will match any offer on him.

They lost the staredown but in the end I think they still get their man. Just for a little more cash than they initially wanted to spend.
Maclin is unrestricted and Eagles have no matching rights. Whoever signs him gets him.

All this talk of speed. I want 2 complete WRs. If one is fast that is great but route runners, hands, size, feel for zones, etc. is much more important. If all you are getting is speed then he's #3 at best.

This reminds me of the arguments over Bob Hayes with his Olympic speed and rocks for hands...

From the tone of Wolverine's post it seemed that he meant that Philly would try match whatever other offers Maclin was getting now that they have the cap space. Don't think he meant that Philly was guaranteed the opportunity to match?

I am a huge fan of Searcy. He was a very underrated prospect coming out of college and I wanted him badly.

He's validated his ability on the field and is still flying under the radar.

Texans making run at WR Randall Cobb and Jeremy Mackin to replace Andre Johnson. Expect them to target Torrey Smith, too.

Cobb hell yeh. Macklin and Torrey Smith, no thanks. You can get younger cheaper versions of both in the draft.

Macklin = Phillip Dorset
Torrey Smith = Devin Smith

Use the money to improve our trenches or secondary.

I see more upside to Macklin than i do Cobb TBH. Cobb had Nelson on the other side, Macklin was basically out there alone.

Up until last year, he had Desean Jackson on the other side and his numbers suffered for it.

But when there was no one on the other side and it was just him he excelled, which is when it is the hardest to put up big numbers, almost like AJ all those years.

That's why i like him more.

Maclin was way more advanced as a WR than Dorsett. I would compare Dorsett more to Percy Harvin. Both guys have elite track speed but are not refined WR's. Devin Smith comparison is right on the money.

I also would prefer Cobb over Maclin, but I do think you sold Maclin a little short there.

Eddie Royal would be an interesting consideration. He almost always runs out of the slot............he has scored 15 total touchdowns over the last two seasons on just 158 total targets. Sounds like exactly the slot receiver we need.

Royal is an enigma for me. Flashes of greatness interspersed with periods where he disappears. May be the offense. May be Rivers. I don't know. Eddie has frustrated many a fantasy footballer.

Eddie Royal is a go route's dream come true. Maybe he's played in the slot for other teams, but he's not the kind of guy I think of when we're talking about multiple, New England type of "slot receiver"

He's got no shake. He's got the right size, but as far as playing style, I'd compare him more to Torrey Smith than Wes Welker.

I'd be interested in all of these guys personally. I like Maclin as having the most upside though.

Cobb is a pretty solid player, but he was thrown to by Rogers. Sometimes I wonder how much Rogers played into his high stats. Solid WR for sure though.

Smith is a great down the field deep threat. If you don't have the QB for him though, what is the point? He is a pretty one dimensional guy. That doesn't make him a bad pick up though. If Mallet signs and turns into a good QB, Smith good be a nice piece here with Mallet's big arm on big plays.

This is nice to hear that the Texans are at least trying to make these moves and being aggressive. I never saw this under Smithiak. This is getting interesting.

Randall Cobb would take $1-2 million less to stay with Packers, per report

The NFL's legal tampering period has begun, and already there has been a development in the negotiations for Randall Cobb. According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports, Cobb would take $1-2 million less per year in order to remain with the Green Bay Packers.

At this stage of the negotiations, it's extremely rare for a free agent to communicate this type of sentiment. While Robinson did not reveal his source, it's clear that the information came from Cobb's camp. The Packers have no reason to leak these details, as they only serve to make them look bad if a deal ultimately doesn't materialize.

The only reason Cobb would communicate that is if the Packers weren't trying very hard to keep him.

even then, why leak it to some yahoo sports writer? why not some local/national people close to you and the team?

Is this something that was leaked or is it conjecture?

Lance Zeirlein may have just found a player the Texans have intentions of signing. Lance Zeirlein just started getting followed by Jacquian Williams and now look at all his recent "follows" on twitter:

Pretty cool way to find out who your team is targeting. jnc

I did minimal research. Was a 4 star recruit out of high school. Hasn't done squat in the NFL. Nothing I saw worth getting excited about.

Lot of the fans at Big Blue View say he was great depth and was coming along as a starter this past year until he had a concussion vs the Seahawks.

I just find it funny how he suddenly starts following all these Texan media people and fan sites.

I love Eddie Royal. Not sure what happened to him in Denver. San Diego can't figure out how to any of their WR's.

Good catch though. That's one way to predict FA signings.

Considering Gaine's success rate in 2014, this should be an interesting acquisition.

Good catch on your part. Hopefully can at least be used as depth.

Cobb gone, i imagine the Texans go after Macklin pretty hard now.

I always thought Percy Harvin was pretty good also, only 27.

oh well.

try to sign torrey smith, don't trust mcclin to stay healthy, and draft Strong.

Don't get all this fragile Maclin talk. Yes he missed a season due to an ACL tear during 2013 training camp, to which he showed a complete recovery from playing a full 16 very effective games last year. Other than that he's missed all of 5 games spread out over his other 4 seasons.

Harvin, his attitude, and his route running is not something I'd be interested in.

Better than any of our current WRs besides Hopkins and AJ who is most likely gone, plus i imagine he will be fairly cheap just for those reasons alone.

So because he's cheap we should introduce a notorious locker room killer? Tons of other guys out there that are probably better than our cast of misfits. That's not exactly setting the standard.

One thing we have seen a lot in NE is going after guys with a lot of talent, but some question marks. Corey Dillon, Randy Moss, etc. Guys with a lot of talent that had recently underperformed.

Based on that line of thinking, I am going out on a limb and saying the Texans will sign...Michael Crabtree!

I think Harvin is going to find the market very depressed from what he's making, maybe even down to the $3-4 mil range. He wouldn't be coming in as the 1st round pick or 1st & 3rd round trade. That humbling along with OB supposedly having a firm hand makes good timing for a reclamation project. He has the talent to be deadly in the Welker/Edelman role.

Cecil Shorts would be an intriguing potential bargain guy.

Out of group of teams to show interest Hoyer, #Texans and #Jets are best shots for him to start. Situation will play out over next 48 hours

This!!! He better be really REALLY cheap and on a one or two year deal only. THis draft is LOADED with quality WR's. Maybe the best overall group of slot WR's ever. No thank you on Harvin.:swatter:
