Texans 2015 Free Agency

You beat me to it.

Williams was rated @2 NT by PFF last year..........he will probably rate a >$8 mil per year multi-year contract. He was mostly a run stopper, having only 1 sack last year..........at Washington, he was not used to rush the passer.....don't know if he could or not if asked to.

It was Arizona not Washington. Washington is interested in him though. That Arizona defense was really good last year. He was a big part of it. More than the stats show.

I can't think of any real pass rushing NTs of hand

I was wondering if anyone would throw his name out there. However improbable it may be, it sure is intriguing. Just how dominating could this defense be by adding Suh? That's not even taking into account a healthy Clowney. JJ could get 30 sacks with Suh on the team. :yikes:

I threw the name out there as a trade possibility since both he and AJ have similar contracts, so he or someone like him is the most likely trade scenario should a trade be found before the June 1 cut date.

But I was working off bad information, thinking he was under contract in 2015. Perhaps it was a speculated value? But whatever.

He is not my type of player, but he does occupy more than one offensive Linemen.

Jay Ratliff in his prime was a good interior rusher for the Cowboys, but Wade's system also used smaller, quicker NTs. Muhammed Wilkerson and Ngata switch between NT and DE, but can do pretty well.

Dan Williams is the Vince Wilfork/Casey Hampton model. Occasional QB pressure, but really there to dominate the line of scrimmage.

Texans would never touch him probably, but Nick Fairley would be an interesting experiment at NT or DE. Jared Odrick is a smaller name that could play 3-4 DE and bookend with Watt.

A lot of inside linebacker help out there to be had it seems. Maulaluga, David Harris, and Sean Weatherspoon would be nice.

A top 3 DL isn't your kind of player?

What is your kind of player?

I don't think having upwards of 1/3 of your cap going into your DL is a very practical way to be successful down the line but having Donkey Kong here would make that defense very entertaining. :kingkong:

Agreed, But it sure would be fun to watch. After all this is just entertainment.

Ok I dont want to be "THAT GUY" ,because I know it's ludicrus to say the name but...

SUH.

We're cutting players and will cut some more. Just trying to make sense of it. There's a plan at Kirby isnt there ,or just maybe "THAT GUY" works there?

You have to embrace the outside the box thinking. We're not going to play offense. We figure by going all-in on the defense we're going to cause and score off of enough turnovers to win ballgames with an offense that goes three and out every single time it takes the field.

Mary Kay Cabot @MaryKayCabot
#Browns are still in the running for Brian Hartline, but he's visiting the Texans today, league source tells http://t.co/o11vJSOExu.

Brian Gaine connection.

Hartline was a 1,000 yard receiver in 2012 and 2013 but wasn't a fit for Bill Lazor. Got a ridiculous second contract.

Vince Wilfork? Just curious on the thought of bringing him in. I'm on the fence about it.
Depends on the money, but he might teach Nix, III how to be Vince Wilfork. He was a beast against the run last year and made some plays in the playoffs that saved the Patriots' bacon.

Which is why I'm not crazy about the idea of spending big $$$ or a 1st round pick on a NT.

Me either, not when you can re-sign Pickett on the cheap and draft a NT like Terry Williams in the 5-6th rd. I'm not even sure NT is a need if you re-sign Pickett and Nix develops.

I'm sure Smith and OB have a plan. After letting Dre and Myers go, we have $27.3 M in cap space. We have 16 free agents. Of these, I believe Mallet, Jackson, Newton and Reed are priority signings and I believe they'd like to resign Lewis and Dent. Releasing Andre makes restructuring J. Jo's contract less a priority and now it's looking better for him remaining a Texan, although restructuring is still a possibility. We need another OC and Texan FA Cody White is a possibility. Ferentz is under contract but is better suited to a zone blocking scheme and is about 25 pounds lighter than I'd like a center to be, going forward in OB's offense. We need a NT and we'll be looking for one in free agency.

We need a receiver, but I believe the Texans are making it a priority to address this need in the draft by drafting a burner for the slot.

$27.3M in cap space seems like a lot, but there are also many comments saying that it is unlikely we resign Jackson because of the cost he will demand on the open market. The $27.3M will allow the team to resign Jackson and the other priorities previously commented on. The Texans will then see what remains to address other needs, such as another receiver to replace Andre. We may need to address this in the draft, as well as a the slot receiver.

And we still need to address another pass rusher, better depth at OT and OG and at safety. But for the first time in a while, the Texans are in a sound financial position to address our needs, going into free agency and the draft.

Agreed. That said, Wilfork moves up towards the top of my list of FA look-sees. At a decent price, that is. He'd help get Nix off his fat ass and get to work at being a pro

Seems like Dockett didn't bother looking outside the NFC West.

Ferentz at 285 lbs is dead in the middle of the centers of the Belichick (ZBS based) era OL's who have been 275 lbs and 296 lbs.

I asked in the NFL free agent thread...what's a decent price?

NE is avoiding $8.5 mil in new money this season.

2 years $10-12 mil?

I don't disagree with most of what you said, but i don't think they are looking for a burner for the slot. I think their prototypical slot guy is more quick than fast. Better at creating space through quickness and finding voids in the defense.
I think they will look for a burner opposite of Hopkins, with a Welker type in the slot.

Not sure where to put this but:

The Orange Page
‏@theorangepage On @PeterBurnsRadio's show this morning it was said that two of the four teams contacting Denver for Brock Osweiler were the Browns & Texans

2 years $8-10 would be perfect. I would probably want the $10-12 to be incentive laden

Not really excited re. the possibility of getting Hartline. Even when he was a totally in the favor of Dolphins management, he had a similar disease to AJ...............he was allergic to the end zone, managing only 7 TDs in his 6 seasons (4 coming in 1 season.......in 2013 prior to his knee injuries)

Pickett hasn't even decided if he wants to play another year. Even if he does at his age be probably won't be able to hold up for the whole season. Counting on Nix to develop is a big gamble.

And there are guys out there that don't have to come off the field on third down. You sure as hell aren't getting them in the 5th round. Shelton, Brown and Phillips and Goldman all have the ability to play third down.

I can't understand this mentality of ignoring how weak our front seven is. And not seeing the need to put talent around JJ Watt to take advantage of having such a great player. We don't have an elite QB and it doesn't appear we will have one anytime soon. This teams best chance at winning is to build a dominant defense with a good running attack.

You can have fifty great WRs but if you don't have a great QB throwing to them how are they going to help you win? We need to make our trenches our strength and roll with that until somehow we find a really good QB.

Need to be careful with that. Andre isn't technically gone. Until then, $18.5M is the number we should be looking at.

Excellent post. I couldn't agree more. We've got arguably the best defensive player in the NFL, but no one can hold up forever under constant double & triple teams. We've got to shore up the front seven. While Suh would be the perfect answer, he's a luxury that we most likely can't afford without hurting the team as a whole. The coaches knew we needed to shore up the NT position & that's why they jumped all over Nix when he dropped to us in spite of his issues. Pickett, while very effective last year, was never meant to be anything more than a stop-gap player at his age. At 16 they should be able to snag one of the better NT's in this year's draft. This draft appears to be pretty deep in WR's & RB's, so we should be able to pick up a good one in the later rounds. I must admit that I'm torn between taking a NT or RT in the first, but if the coaches feel Newton will get better I'm okay with that.

As for the QB situation, even though he hasn't played enough to show what he can do full time, I just have one of those feelings about Mallett (you sometimes get about a player) that he might turn out to be that special gem that comes along once in a very long while. It's just a feeling though.

Clean players are my type of players. Not dirty. But I realize there are many who would rather have dirty players and think that makes them winners. I just don't agree. The shame is that he is talented enough to play clean.

Give me talented players, clean/dirty doesn't matter. Even though the Texans play mostly on Sunday, we aren't talking about Sunday school teaching here.

Agreed, but I think a dominant pass rusher would do more to help Watt, they tried to do this with Clowney last yr. You can find a serviceable NT later in the draft/FA With that said I hope the sign Wilfork to help mentor Nix and a pass rusher like Dupree falls to them at 16. If a pass rusher falls below 10 the Texans should really consider trading up and getting him. I really like Dupree a lot.

A front 7 of

Watt/Wilfork/Crick (Nix/Pagan backups)

Mercilus/Cushing/Heeney/Dupree

Yep, that's a front 7 you can win with.

Like I said. Not MY type of player and I'm aware there are differing opinions. But it says more about the people than the players. I'm no fan of the Lombardi approach and many WORSHIP him. Winning is neither everything nor the only thing. How you win matters.

Tyrunn Walker would be a good relatively inexpensive guy to take a look at for DE rotation/challenge Crick. 19 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 306 snaps last season. 6'3" 294 lb DT.

Saints aren't going to tender him because they truly are cap strapped.

RT @MikeJonesWaPo: Orakpo on NFL AM says he also wouldn't mind playing for one of the teams in his home state of Texas.

On a nice "prove it" deal. Im down.

I could definitely get behind an Orakpo signing on a prove it deal. We need a ton of help on the edge. Our OLB play has not been good in recent years regardless of the investment we've put into it.

except for that injury history thing, I'd agree
