Texan's #1 Priority?

AndreJ

Rookie
Im just curious as to what you all think is the texans #1 priority is.

IMO, i think it is our O-Line (the left side specifically), they are just not gettin it done as far as pass protection goes. It's a new system and all and i thnk the run blocking is starting to come along very nicely, but it could be alot better.

Ok i think its been made pretty clear that our O-Line is the #1 prority for the texans, now how do yall think we should adress this issue beacause i have no idea.

Do you think we should get someone in the draft? Free Agency, New O-Line coach? Etc....

I think we keep working on it with the people we have. Even as much as I'd like to see Steve McKinney get beaten out of a job by a center who can actually do the job I don't see anyone coming in here next season and pushing anyone to the bench. I'm not against drafting an offensive lineman if one merits whatever round he's taken in because you keep adding players. I just think that we're going to be seeing this line for another year at least. Wand and Pitts are young. So is Wade. McKinney is going to get a pass again because the coaches don't want to upset whatever chemistry he has with DC (Like what is a new center going to do? Let more guys through and fumble more snaps?) and Weigert is an asset. There's nothing wrong with the people we've got (mostly) that game experience in this system won't fix.

But yeah, somewhere in there I think it's possible the Texans take an o-lineman. I look for them to again focus on defense though early on. More work is what they need. If that fails then they need to examine which part of the learning process isn't getting it done. Are the players not learning or is the teacher not teaching?

Seth Wand needs to get stronger. Draft David Baas (C/G).

I wonder if the Texans would go after a guy like Alex Barron if he fell to us in the draft. At the rate we are losing games we might be that high.

i think we need a franchise LT...that's gotta be our number one need...walter jones is gonna be available and with shaun alexander and hasselback and jones all going to unrestricted FA...jones could be one they don't tag...if they don't tag him...we better make a huge jump for him...actually we better get him...he would improve this line by leaps and bounds...then we could focus our draft back to defense where it needs to be focused

No... the draft this year is FULL of Offensive linemen. Our focus needs to be Defense this year.

Aaron has lost a step (still really good, but we need another impact player)
DT or DE is needed for Pass Rush. Seth and Gary are aging quickly too...
Babin are awesome and dunta are awesome, with Sharper and Wong, and Peek, we might need someone to come in for Foreman who keeps getting beat badly.

My judgement

1st, 2nd Need to be Defense, 3's need to be Offensive Lineman, 4 needs to be a Very fast WR (doesnt even have to be the best catcher, just a speed demon to open the field even more. 5-7 needs to be back to Defense for late blooms and maybe a steal.

I still think the O-line needs to be dealt with first, but I think the RB position is an issue. They say Wand needs to get stronger in the off-season. I don't know if he'll improve enough in that area, but I'd sure like to know. I'm starting to believe the argument that DD is just not a break-away threat. The TEAM does better when he either doesn't play or is out there on a day when we run less often. I think he's a very, very good 3rd down back. It's hard for me to believe that our offense is ranked so much better than our defense at times, but I don't see the need for replacements there. I think Payne will do better next year and that Foreman needs to be replaced by guys that we've already got, instead of drafting new ones. I'm all for Babin, Sharper, Wong, Peek from left to right.

Their most glaring weaknesses are in the trenches, especially on defense. I understand that a 3-4 lineman's job is to keep the offensive linemen off of the linebackers, but it seems that they would make more tackles or register more sacks just by accident. Robaire is the best DL and he's barely in the top 50 statistically. We seldom see any kind of push or penetration from these guys. The offensive line just needs a complete overhaul. I'm amazed every week by how much time the opposing QB has to throw compared to Carr. Wade and Weigert are servicable, but a major change is needed at the other spots.

Most importantly, they need a coaching staff that can utilize the talent that they do have. This receiving corp is just as good as it was earlier in the year when everyone from ESPN to other team's coaches were praising it, but for some reason our coaches can't devise a game plan to get them the ball. Sure, Johnson is going to be doubled up at times, but remember how solid Gaffney was earlier in the year? Why is Armstrong not getting at least 3 to 4 balls thrown his way each game? The guy has made 2 of the biggest plays of the year for this team and he's not even activated because the coaches need more useless tight ends in the game? The game day decisions that these guys make never cease to amaze me. From personnel decisions to play calling to clock management... management of virtually every aspect of the game is suspect.

O-line and NT. TE is close behind. NT and OLT are the only two positions of big need that would merit a 1st round pick. We could get a center with our 2nd or one of our 3rd's.

BTW, anyone else happy the Cowboys lost to New Orleans? It would be fantastic if they went 0-3 and gave us a high 3rd round pick.

weigert is far from an asset this year at least.

o-line (center or guard) and d-line (if nothing else we'll find a potential back up n.t.) will be top priorities in the draft and free agency. we cannot hold the line of scimmage on either side of the ball.

-i also see a need for a big young cb to play in our nicklepackage (and perhaps to groom behind glenn).

-we need a young inside linebacker to develop behind foreman (and if a quality ilb falls our way high in the draft i'd love to see us snag him). probably a smaller type with coverage skills...

-bradford is leaving ,and if he isnt he should be. we have a need for another wr to take some of the pressure off aj.

-plenty of quality tightends comming out this year (2-3 rd talents). would be nice not to have to gamble on jop again.

-inevitably we will get whatever quality player we can find late in the draft that also happens to have a serious injury.

we will not draft anyone with character issues.

we will make at least 1 trade.

oh, and we'll draft a qb again. it fits c.c.'s m.o.

i Think a rookie, unless a stud will have a learning curve. once we get past the period where all the free agents are tagged and we have a clear landscape to whats available will we be able to decide.

As much as i'd like to spend a 1st round pick on a Tackle, its gonna be at least 1 full season before he is able to develop, a high quality free agent can produce instant dividends and that draft pick and be spent on the defense that needs to get younger fast.

Bolster the offense through free agency, we are just 1 or 2 offensive lineman away from being very dangerous. Defense can be drafted cause all our rookies from last year still have alot to prove. The front 7 needs help... Sharper, Robaire, and Babin are the only ones i'd promise a job next year, the rest should be looked at to have a replacement drafted and groomed.

I could see the Texans going LT with their #1 pick. And then going D. I could see them doing a number of things. But until we see how the FA period goes, its all speculation, and is subject to change.

Unless a guy blows them away I can't see them taking a LT in the first round. I think the team will continue to develop Wand. I can see us taking a tackle later though.

Walter Jones should be a free agent this offseason. I dont see them using the tag on him again, so if they dont sign him to a long term deal, then he should be available.

Jones - Pitts - Mckinney - Weigert - Wade

I kind of agree with this. But I dont know if the front office can hold back from taking their #1 tackle if he is still on the board. Just like I dont think they would have passed on Gallery, had he been still on the board.

Yeah i don't see us adressing the O-Line issue from the draft we have to pick up someone in FA. We can still draft a Tackle in the later round (3rd maybe 2nd), but like it has been previously said, it will take him a year to develop.

I think Wand will be our guy.. or at least will get another season to show if he CAN be our guy. He has done well.. his weakness seems to be speed.. and that can be improved with technique. He has gotten alot of experience this season, now he will have an offseason to build on it and turn it into production on the field. If he isnt looking better next season, then we may consider a first round LT next year I would think.

We HAVE a good oline.. Wand is the weakest link right now but it is also his first real season.. so you gotta give him time. You gotta give the whole line time really. But the talent is there. Maybe zone blocking just isnt the answer? we have a huge oline.. and that doesnt seem to be part of the recipe for successful zone blocking.

if you look at the denver Oline.. they are ALOT smaller than our guys.

I see us trying to trade up for Derrick Johnson in the first. if that isnt possible then I see us looking at Rodrique Wright.. and if THAT doesnt work out.. then i see us looking at Anttaj Hawthorne and Ronnie Brown.

in the second, if he is available I could see us considering David Baas, but like I said.. Oline isnt as big an issue as people make it out to be right now. Ive heard that Ciatrick Fason the RB is a possibility as well. But he is DDs size.. and I dunno that we would want to risk drafting another small RB.

Honestly.. no one in the second round sticks out to me as someone we would REALLY want.. which makes me beleive that trading up for Derrick Johnson is a big possibility. unless Marcus Spears fell to us... that would be a nice second round pickup.

I keep hearing they are looking to bolster their defense. I guess they will say though they will pick up the best player available. They don't need a QB or TE. Could use help/depth on the Oline. I guess they need to start thinking about Glenn retiring.

IMO, Glenn's spot is the biggest concern. I see him declining and I expect it to accelerate next year. If we don't have the guy to replace him with at mid season, I think we could be in deep do do. Top flieght CB's are typically 1st round picks and DL is second and third (not allways of course). I am not sure if there is a center FA available this year, but if there is I think we should take a sniff. If not, we better draft one. If Derrick Johnson is a fit with the 34 and we feel comfortable with what we have at CB, I would not be put out if we moved to get him. (not sure he fits the 34, but he is a playmaker).

1st round CB or LB
2nd round DL - One that could get a push up the middle
3rd round TE (if needed) Center (if needed) otherwise BPA

I've read many threads here and elsewhere complaining about McKinney's play this year...I wasn't aware he was having such a bad year. I guess then center could be a draft choice somewhere in the middle rounds. I'll have to watch him more on Sundays. Maybe he's the weak link in the line????

With McKinney.. I could see us taking a center late to groom. Like 4th or 5th round. But I dont see us using a high pick to come in and take his position immediatly.

With Glenn... I think we can get another year out of him.. or put Coleman back in if Glenn really starts struggling.. but I dont see him declining that much. If nothing else we can move glenn to second CB and let Dunta take first. I just think CB can wait another season.. especially when our front 7 needs so much help.

As for TE.. if we are in a BPA situation in the 2nd or 3rd.. (which would probably mean something went wrong somewhere else) then I imagine taking a TE is a big possibility. But other than that.. again.. i dont see us taking one when we have big concerns elsewhere. We are still hoping on Joppru.

I believe I read where Aaron said he would like to play another year and possibly retire after the 05 season.

So perhaps the Texans might not want to replace him via the draft till the draft that year.

I noticed he hasn't had the best of years but I really think that's as much the rule change on DB's as it is anything else.

I think the Texans lack for only about 4-5 positions next season , in no specific order .

Defensive End to replace an aging Gary Walker who is makin a load of money and just not performing . Marcus Spears would be interesting . Not sure he fits the 3-4 ....

Cornerback Aaron Glenn is not getting any younger , his salary is also quite large . Antrel Rolle , Carlos Rogers , Marlin Jackson ??

Inside Linebacker Someone to complement J.Sharper that can actually plug a gap instead of makin tackle 5 yards downfield . Derrick Johnson .... yeah im dreaming on that one

Running Back Dominic Davis , Tony Hollings , Jonathan Wells have all been given a some time to show what they can do , None of them has really shown they can be an Every Down back and collectively havent gotten it done . Cedric Benson , Carnell Williams , Ronnie Brown any of those would be fine by me or possibly Maurice Clarett on day two .

And the O-Line which i think will not see much change from this season to next considering the upgrades made last season and the new blocking scheeme they implemented . although depth never hurts in the trenches . If anyting here i'd like to see the Center position addressed .

Many of the named i mentioned would likely require some movement upwards in draft position unless the Texans just fall flat :thud: on their faces the rest of this season . (wouldnt bother me if they did , Remember the Rockets purposely losing games to win the rights to Akeem ? ...errr is that Hakeem ?)

a plea to Charley Casserly .... Please No More QB's or TE's ....... or QB's to be moved to Saftey :hairpull:

One more NEED , a coaching staff that Plays to WIN , not keep it close :heh:

Assuming they address all these needs via free agency or the draft they could compete for the division next season and for several seasons to come .

Gleen has played pretty good this year. Who knows, maybe he'll be like Darrel
Green and play till he's 40. But he should have atleast another good year.
Johnson would be awesome, but I shudder to think what they would have to
pay to move up and pick. I know they want to upgrade Foreman, but is
that Johnsons highest & best use ? I'm not sure if hes an ILB or OLB in the
3-4.

I don't think any team who plays two against paymeaton/stokely and two against billyV/drewB could ever have too many topshelf DBs
these are 25% of our games between now and reallignment

No Doubt about the coaches. Why we don't throw more is beyond me. I know Carr doesn't have a lot of time, but what happend to the 3-step drop, quick slant/out/curl. Carr can throw those patterns so well I watched all his games a fresno state and he's great at throwing those passes. He came from a system that throws quick passes to let receivers run after the catch and throw downfield when open. Our guys can do stuff after they catch the ball. That will open up the deep game. This coaching staff is brutal. The D-line just needs to penetrate it's pathetic to watch how much time other QB's have. From left to center is a huge ?mark on the o-line (Pitts doesn't bother me as much as Wand and McKinney) and you can't sell me on Wade and weigert. good stuff

biggest need IMO on offense
1)complete TE (if Joppru isn't ready)
2)OL upgrade
3) RB

biggest need IMO on defense
1) DL
2)ILB
3)secondary help.

I'd like to see us get either a a topnotch ILB or CB with our 1st pick.2nd round,DLine (possibly move up in the 2nd to possibly a 1st (like last year))

I'm coming to a similar conclusion. in the 3-4 defense its the Linebackers responsibilty to get through the lanes opened up by the tackles to have a play on the QB. our defensive lineman have a thankless job never the less toil away, filling the two gap, cover the run & try to put pressure on the QB. it would take a freak of a tackle to dominate both the line and supply a bus load of sacks in a 3-4 & I just don't see one this year. so I'm in favor of selecting a DE with pass rushing skills as well as being able to cover a marquee TE or RB out of the backfield (another freakishly talented player) I like the strategy used last year by the Texans of drafting a DE to convert at OLB (Babin) seems like a smart move for a 3-4 scheme will they do it again?

de-ja vu, IMO the #1 Need for the Texans is Mathias Kiwanuka DE Boston College 6-8 260lbs 4.6 speed. he could move around play ILB or OLB, he can chase down or swallow RB's & of all the DE's he possess the most past rushing skills of the bunch along with nearly 7 foot wingspan he blocks, tips or mis-directs the flight of the ball numerious times during the course of a game & he could become the trigger for that Texans 3-4 defense. Thus fullfilling the Texans #1 need as your question stated.

What are you talking about? He's 6-0, 214.

Davis 5'9" about 215-220 ish. At this point in football 215 on a six frame is average to a little light. Usually guys with frames like fiason are able to carry 5-10 more pounds without losing any speed or quickness.

I see us signing a DL in free agency & possibly an interior OL. I'd be surprised if they signed a veteran LT in FA. Starting quality LT's just cost too much.

With our 1st pick, I see us going after a shutdown CB (Bryant McFadden, Marlin Jackson, or Carlos Rogers), an impact LB (Kirk Morrison or Robert McCune), DT (Anttaj Hawthorne or Rodrique Wright, if he comes out), or one of the RB's from Auburn (most likely Ronnie Brown).

With our 2nd pick, I see us taking an OL such as Jammal Brown, Michael Munoz, Ben Wilkerson, or trading down & going after Baas.

With our 2 3rd's, I could see us going after Kevin Everett (TE), Anthony Bryant (DT), Travis Johnson (DT), Mike Goolsby (ILB), Sione Pouha (DT), or James Butler (FS).

After the 3rd round, it'll be BPA.

Run tackling by the defense has been a major disappointment this year. So the #1 priority should be the "buc"MLB that can run sidline to sideline with instincts enough to get back in pass coverage, and replace Foreman. #2 should be a big 'ol meanie NT to backup and eventually replace Payne. #3a & #3b is where we should be debating OL, (LT will be fine, it is OC & RG that is the real weakness of the O-Line), RB or another CB, or TE. Not bad, we will get two of the four positions addressed. 4-5-6-& 7 is where we Draft for added depth. Symons (QB) is on the practice squad, as is Sloan (WR), and RB Renaldo Works certainly will be factored into the mix next season, so we don't need QB, or WR. Lord (SS, RB, WR, emergency QB) is also an interesting project. My point being we have some pretty good talent on the practice squad that we :hmmm: should get a good look at in next years training camp.

As of the game today where we beat Jax, in Jax, to the tune of 21 to zip. We are 7-9, and with a good game at Reliant Park next week against lowly Cleveland, we should end up the season at 8-8 for the first time in team history. Maybe we are finally turning the corner, and ready to really contend for the division next year. Another first, we beat Tenn both games, and Jax both games, for the first time this year. Now if we just learn to outwit Dungy's version of the cover II, we should beat Indy next year for the first time. Things are looking up for our Texans.

Funny how the defense has played its best ball when Foreman goes down and is replaced.

#1 priority in my mind is the offensive line. I'm not saying to gut the O-line, like San Diego did, but pass protection needs to get better.

Vinny said:

I was thinking the same thing. Seem to be stronger up the middle. Not a lot, but better.

I believe Virginia is playing tomorrow around 1:00 I'm looking forward to seeing Ahmad Brooks, since some of you guys have raved so highly about him should be a good watch :hmmm:

(OLT through free agency, stop gap to groom Wand)

#1 RB- only possition where starter is needed to take pressure off DD
(Wells might have high trade value) (Texans had tried to get L Jordan before)

#2 DL- speed off the edge

#3 CB- groomed to replace AG

#3B, #4, #5- role players: TE ILB WR

number one priority is the offensive line. walker is holding the d-line back but with his paycheck i doubt our starters are going to see any transitions next season ... we still start walker/payne/smith. i dont watch much college ball so i'm not even going to attempt to match names to positions yet.

o-line ... if we can upgrade c/g through free agency or trade, great. if not, use 1st or 2nd on it. this is our top priority

qb ... is gonna be fine with carr, symons, & ragone

tightend ... why bother drafting one if we're not even going to use him? in the year of the tightend our best receiving tightend has only 14 receptions. (compared to his previous 51 & 40). cross your fingers and hope bennie j isnt a complete bust.

wr ... look great. bradford leaves and armstrong takes his spot with starling as #4

rb ... i have full faith in DD. hollings however looks like a bust so if we can pick up a specialty back later in the draft, groovy.

d-line ... can usually be picked up with atleast 1 of our 3rd round picks.

lb ... should be in good shape if we can eliminate foreman. move wong to the inside & start peek. we're still lacking in depth though. load up on bdpa on the second day.

cb ... could be in trouble soon. glenn is losing steps rapidly but faggins is picking them up quickly. a 2nd or 3rd round here would be a good option.

s ... pretty good shape. i thought coleman looked real good for the most part and earl's improvement each game is exactly what we need. mccree if he sticks around is a solid backup

I think that we definately need to have a perrenial pro bowl caliber player on both the offensive and defensive lines.

we dont have anyone on the DL that requires a double team...just think of how potent babin and peek would be if the OL had to double team a defensive end...

Same thing applies to the offense line. A bone fide "blue chip" talent at tackle or guard would go a long way to give carr and davis more time to do their thing.

We already have good to great playmakers at the skills positions on both sides of the ball. (qb, wr, rb, te, lb, cb, s) Now we need some 1st round hosses (barron, brikshaw, rod wright, etc.) to allow them to really shine...

The biggest weakness on this team is SS

As much as some like Glen Earl, he's not the playmaker they really need on the defense. A guy like Thomas Davis or Ernest Shazor would be good

Secondly, left guard is a position i'm worried about. Pitts isn't getting any better. A guy like David Baas is likely going to drop to about pick #60 just b/c of other talent in the draft. Good G/C prospect

The offense needs another playmaker. The offense looked terrible again in the 2nd half versus Jacksonville, and if you take away DD's 2 big runs, he had very little. A tight end threat like Heath Miller in the 1st or a guy like Vincent Jackson in the 3rd would be good. If they wanted to go receiver like the Lions did, Larry Brackins from Pearl River Community College will be available in the 1st and possibly early 2nd round if we were to trade up. At 6'4 220 he is a very physical, very fun to watch player. He was recruited by USC, LSU and Miami (FL) but couldn't make it accademically. He's a 21 year old soph. meaning he's good to go and not to mention, has a 40 inch vertical. The team that gets him will be one lucky team for many years to come

OLT - As said, unless there is a stud at LT we will not draft one early. In order to get a "stud", we would have to trade up.
C- Steve McKinney is getting mauled by just about every NT/DT he faces. His finesse game might have worked in Indy (with a good surrounding cast) but it doesn't cut it here. They really need to find his eventual replacement this offseason.
RB - DD is adequate but doesn't seem to hold up for a full season. He also hasn't played well injured. We need a power back in this offseason. If a potential stud drops to us in the 1st round, we might jump on it.
WR - AJ has shown he is a stud. It would be nice to find a true #2 to take the pressure off of him. I don't think they have that on the team right now. They might address this need in free agency. Bradford should be gone.
TE - Joppru has done nothing for the team to date. Bruener and Miller have been inadequate as the complete package. The team wants to run some two tight end formations. It makes sense to take a TE with one of the 3rd round picks.
NT - Payne improved as the season went on but is still not back to his previous form. We could use depth here and it is one of the slower positions to learn. Even if we drafted someone high, he might not start until 2006 or later.
ILB - Foreman is not the answer at ILB, and Sharper's play dipped a bit this season. Speed is definitely needed here. We really need to upgrade here with a first day pick.
DE - Not as big of a priority since we have so much money invested in Walker and Smith. We could use depth and someone to rotate in with these two. Hopefully Walker bounces back next year.
CB - If there is a talented young corner available, they might want to get one as their nickel and the eventual replacement for Glenn. Not a high priority just yet.

Original comments from TheOgre, with early draft picks added. I'm assuming Rod Wright returns to school. And I'm predicting Chad Green would start as a rookie and make an impact similar to Robinson or Vilma.

If Greenway returns to school, my first round pick becomes DAVID BAAS - OG

The way I see it our priorities go like this:

1)LT- Jammal Brown, Alex Barron, D' Brickashaw Ferguson

2)NT- Rodrique Wirght, Anttaj Hawthorne

3)OG (Both LG and RG)- Elton Brown, David Baas

4)TE- Heath Miller, Alex Smith

5)RB (Cedric Benson already being gone top 5)- Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown
