Teddy Bridgewater, QB Vikings

I think too much is made of visible emotion on the sidelines with QBs. Roger Staubach was never a screamer/yeller, but there is no doubt that he was a leader of men and was a champion to his core.
But he never left anyone doubting that he was a competitor. I suspect the off camera remarks got pretty heated.

Staubach got very intense, but was exceedingly controlled. Heated is a vague term. If you mean more than intense or focused then that wasn't him. He was an "oh ****, Roger's not talking" guy. Now Landry...

It certainly was a suspicion and not knowledge. The only information I have is remarks by those reviewing his time in the NFL remarking that he left no doubt about his desire to win. How he did that , I can only guess.

I got really lucky, went to HS and college with the son of the folks who lived next door to Staubach. Then years later officed with The Staubach Corporation. Very cool dude. As I said, not sure what you meant by heated. He wasn't Brady heated but no, you are correct that I doubt anyone around him ever thought there was an acceptable result other than winning. Basically a style comment.

You were fortunate. He did strike me as more of an icy stare kind of guy than a vocal one. But time as an officer in the Navy gave me a reason to think he might get vocal away from the cameras.

I almost said something about the phrase "cussing like a sailor" because that wasn't him at all. But then again you have to take into consideration his Navy experience was the academy and counting boxes in 'nam. But a decade later I never heard a cuss from him.

My leadership comments come from the military largely and the observation from there that great leaders come from and take very different forms. Leadership is not solely sitting in front of the group screaming at them. In fact that visible "leadership" is probably the least effective.

It's the guy you don't want to let down...

Exactly! A great leader is one you want to follow. One that makes you want to do what you really don't want to do. Very seldom is that the vocal type

Getting back to original topic. Teddy and Derrick Carr look like the only qb's that have a real future in this league so far from the rookie class. And the Texans picked neither. I am still wondering what the hell BOB and Smith were thinking when they didn't even consider Teddy. Because he looks like the Black Tom Brady.

I REALLY wanted the Texans to make some kind of trade up and get Bridgewater when he was falling into the late first round. Really ticked me off when Minnesota got him. I didn't know exactly what he was worth, but I knew that guy was a steal from anywhere past the 20th pick. That, and he was the ultimate professional compared to Manziel's antics and not-NFL-type-QB-play.

Bortles is raw but is an excellent athlete and a real competitor. He's what the Jags thought they were getting in Gabbert. Mettenberger has flashed and there are other guys who we havent seen. The poor mouthing of this QB draft class was off base. We're already seeing the same criticism of the 2015 class. Odds are they will be wrong again.

I agree there's no Andrew Luck, but several good prospects for NFL starters.

Really? Are Houston fans this low that they will try to change history if it involves a Cowboy who was great?

Thanks. Kind of gives a perspective on what you want as a team.

I was just pointing out that even Staubach as cool calm and collected as he is has a line that you don't cross, or you suffer the consequences.

Yes, I would love to have a team lead by a leader like Staubach, one who says that 9-7, 7-9 isn't good enough and is willing to do whatever it takes to raise his teams level of play to win. Regardless of whatever it takes. That includes kicking a teammates a** if that's what it takes to let his teammates know who's in charge and that regardless of how a game goes they can count on him

I meant my previous post to point out what a great leader Staubach was/is. You misinterpeded my post. Staubauch is one of my all time favorites. Many of my childhood memories was with my dad telling me when the 4th qtr started and the Cowboys were behind not to worry Staubach would find a way to win.

Ask Clint Longley if Staubach had a temper?

'Roger always could bounce the football off the ground to come right back to him,' Brandt said. 'He'd do it over and over. They'd have contests, and Clint couldn't do it.

'Longley challenged Roger to a fight. Roger told him they were going to meet on another field after practice.'

Staubach and Longley took off their helmets and pads. 'They got after it,' Brandt said. 'Roger beat the hell out of him.'

Assistant coach Dan Reeves had to break up the fight. Later, Longley sucker-punched Staubach in the locker room.

Sounds like Longley was the one with the temper, Staubach was just standing his ground as any real man would do.

According to ESPN...

Bridgewater finished his rookie season with the 3rd highest completion percentage (64.4%) and 7th highest passer rating (85.2) in NFL history.

He did all this while missing Adrian Peterson for 15 games, Kyle Rudolph for 9 games, and his top 2 weapons being a 31-year old Greg Jennings and Jarius Wright.

I was in favor of taking him #1 and I still feel he would have proven himself worthy of the selection, especially when you consider the weapons he would have had at his disposal. I don't blame the Texans for going with Clowney, but I think we really missed a very profitable opportunity by not trading up for Teddy late in the 1st round.

I wonder who else is at the top of that list.

Top 3 passer ratings (rookie)
Roethlisberger (98.1)
Dan Marino (96)
Greg Cook (88.2)

Top 3 completion percentage (rookie)
Roethlisberger (66.44)
Marino (58.45)
Leftwich (57.18)
