TE Dalton Schultz

Schultz sucks

That is all
I didn't expect them to part ways with Slowik... strange times.

I'd be a little worried if I were Schultz. Scared as hell actually, but I'd be all on the blame Slowick train if I was him. I'd even be like, "They should've fired Mooreland too. He told me not to "really" block DEs on the edge."

He should be scared. His ineptitude was on full display that last offensive series with not 1, but 2 shitty chip blocks that didn’t even knock Karlaftis off balance on his way thru Dare to CJ. **** was pathetic.

Oh yea you mean like when Will Anderson pushed that little wimpy T. Kelchy aside with one
hand and then using his other to throw the Chiefs RB down on his azz with the orher hand ?

If I were Stroud, I would have been on Dalton's ass for that! I do not know if Stroud had anything to do with slow week and the offensive line coach being fired but it was deserved and shows him that the boss was watching.

Edit
And gives me hope that the offensive line will be fixed.

Instead of seeing this thread title all the time, can we just change it to when are we gonna cut/trade Schultz? He has 0 blocking ability which is required from a TE. You have an off season to get it right. I know CJ likes him, so I would sit him down and show him play after play of CJ getting crushed because this charmin soft TE makes no effort to chip or block. You can blame Bobby for putting a TE on a DE sometimes, but you at least have to make an effort and slow the guy down. Will be nice to get Jordan back, but he ain't much better. I am on the Tyler Warren train.

Is he any better a blocker? I didn't see him get asked to do it much
HIs strengths from some draftniks:
• Has the frame to play in-line, as a wingback and fullback
• Long arms are advantageous for catch radius and when blocking
• Hold up well versus power against most defensive ends
• Very strong player
• Not afraid of the physical aspects of the game
• Big-time production increase as a receiver in 2024

I also see some comments he needs to work on technique for run blocking. As long as he is like Stover, willing to learn and try I think he would be a big upgrade.

Yes, Warren can not block either but can score; with WR type yardage. For me, depending on how OGs resolved, Fannin should be a Texan.

More like… the new OC is going to take him -off- blocking assignments and utilize his strengths. Last year… that was him coming thru with some clutch catches for us.
Texans keep trying to force receiver type tight ends to be blocking tight ends. Schultz could be effective but we have to know his weaknesses and proceed accordingly. This has not happened much this season. It did a little bit more so in 2023 and why he was giving a raise.
Dalton Schultz allowed to be what he is and then add tight end Fannin could be a pretty powerful Duo.

Need OC who motivates Schutlz to work harder on his explosives - route's sharper, more concise, hands both quicker to catch point and stronger. Adding blocking assignment to route's, engaging off line, chipping edge and recognition of problematic mis-matches impairing teammates.
Hopefully, with a new OC he'll regain his motivation to be special & play like he did in 2023.

The Ravens have less than $6 million to spare on the 2025 cap. Cutting or trading TE Mark Andrews would free up $11 million. I think that's a real possibility as Isaiah Likely is "likely" to be the starting TE moving forward. I still think Andrews has something left in the tank, despite his issues in the divisional round. The kind of reliable target that knows how to separate in zone coverage that Stroud needs.

Since they cant develop TE's I would be on board with bringing in Andrews. Even if it meant drafting a couple of OL in the draft and passing on a vet OL in FA. They've gotta find a solid TE that can both block and be a weapon in the passing game. Andrews can do both of these things. I wish BOB would've drafted Andrews back in the day, but he decided to go in a different direction.

With all of this said it really hurts that if they do this they will have spent big money on both Andrews/Schultz and spent draft capital on Stover/Jordan. I would also draft Lachey in rd 5 and let him sit for a yr to get healthy. In short they need to solve the TE riddle that's plagued this org since their inception. (Minus OD)

In other words Schultz sucks.

I was looking at Shultz's 2023 and 2024 stats. I didn't recall that he only started 8 games in 2023.

Also, seeing that he went from starting 8 to 13 games and the WR injuries, he should have posted career highs. I guess with more playing time came more opportunities to block and killed his motivation.

Texans OC’s have failed miserably in making the TE position a real threat for several seasons now. This failure could be put on the shoulders of the many years of horrible OL’s. Fix the OL…and the TE would naturally follow suit.

After watching last season, we need to trade him. He was flat out jogging routes, not appearing to give 100% to blocks and flat stopping and acting uninterested if he wasn't involved.

Stover seems primed to be TE 1. And Jordan or a mid round (or mid level FA) could easily replace Schultz.

Thoughts?

Sure, who takes him (and his contract)? And can you get anything more than a 6th/7th for him?

The trade would be about cap savings ~$9 m to ~11m . Depending if post or pre June 1st. Anything we get back in trade is gravy for the fried chicken.

Take on his salary . I'm good with getting the cap space, I don't need more compensation. I can't stand a guy that has such low character gets paid and put in the blocking effort he did.

I get that everyone is tired of him, but if the fans have noticed his uselessness, I promise you GMs have. So I ask again; who would take on his salary, knowing he sucks ass?

Schultz is not SWARM, and I think that's what everyone sees.

To be fair, the Texans were in a bit of a jam when they re-signed him last offseason. This, like the extensions of Ward, Mason, and Howard, is another of those NC moves that's a major headscratcher. I don't like participating in revisionist history, but I remember last year the TE market was pure ass. There was nothing on the market better than Schultz. I don't know why they gave him so many years, I would have preferred to over pay for another year or franchise him, and then see what they could do this offseason. He played better in his first year with the team, so I could see how the team was expecting a similar level of performance out of him. Guess he wanted a multi year contract and had the Texans over a barrel?

I know this sounds wild talking about a player coming off a major injury, but I think Jordan may outplay him as the pass catching TE. He's more athletic and (seemingly) has better hands than Ole' Schultzy. Strangely, since Demeco has arrived, I think he is getting the most out of Jordan. I would like to see if we can dump Schultz off on someone, and if not, maybe bench him or cut him (assuming we can bring in some depth that can block and catch a pass here and there). I'm not thrilled about doing that, but I want to see competition at all positions and not handing players the job. I'm willing to roll the dice on Jordan.

It's not like Schultz is the worst player in the world or anything, but when he screws something up, it's very "public" and tends to happen at crucial moments of the game. He's bad for the psyche of this team. He's Tunsil like in the sense that he has talent, but he just doesn't seem very engaged with football or the game itself. I think that Tunsil is more talented and clearly a better player than Schultz is, just wanting to use him as an example of a finesse player not a physical one. I do think this coaching staff will hide him more and keep him in his role as the pass catching TE, but there is only so much you can do with him.

I’d trade Schultz back to the Cowboys straight-up for FB- Hunter Luepke (North Dakota State). Cowboys just flat out didn’t utilize him in the right manner.

Why is he still here to the big question. Going half speed all year and taking plays off. We should move him and start Stover and Jordan. Maybe grab a late round TE if we need more than 3, seeing we have Quinton also

Drafting Loveland or Taylor would solve this issue. I expect improvement from Stover.

I like Stover as a long term backup. But he’s not fast or sudden. I think he is somewhat limited in terms of upside as a pass catcher. I think he is a decent blocker now and has room to improve so I see that as his path…and of course he will catch some balls too.

And I’m not at all opposed to a TE like Mason or Loveland if he is the BPA at the spot they are at…but I don’t think it’s a priority this year so if let’s say Loveland and Booker is at 25..I’d add Booker to the team based on need.

Loveland would be my guy other than Banks.

I'm a Michigan guy, but I worry about Loveland. He is not exactly the size of a true TE. He is more a big WR. IF he adds about 20lbs, then I would love to have him. His talent is amazing

You would want Loveland to be 268 (almost 270) pounds?? 248 is fine for a TE lol. For reference, he's an inch taller and 2 pounds less than Kelce, and 3 pounds heavier than Darren Waller. 268 is even heavier than Darnell Washington
