Takeaways from the Browns game.

Texans were well and truly in the game until they lost Taylor.
Online was looking good.
Defense is getting some pressure on their QB.
We look vulnerable against a good ground attack and the secondary is a little suspect.
Good teams will beat us.
Mills just looks inaccurate.
I'll open it up.

Nobody should have expected Taylor to last the whole season, that's not what he does.

Mills didn't look as horrible as I expected, and I suspect he'll have a better game against the Panthers Thursday, which we'll still lose.

Defense is playing better than last year with less talent. In fact, the whole team is playing better than last year with less talent.

Lots of fight in this team. Lets hope Mills can show some growth on a short week and Tyrod isn’t out too long. Tyrod looks like a bonafide starting QB up until the hammy injury.

I was impressed by the LBs KGH and Kirksey. Lots of hustle. Hope Reid is ok. He’s another “good when healthy” player.

Jacob Martin had some good wins in pass rush. He may get 10 sacks this year.

OL did a great job neutralizing the Browns DL. Hope Tunsil is ok and they can continue to gel.

Mills does not look ready to start but neither do the other rookie QBs currently playing in 2021 (Looking at you Zach Wilson and Trevor Lawrence). Its go time hopefully the team can put themselves in a positive game script where he doesn’t have to do too much. Cannot give away the football muffing punts!

The Texans have been more competitive than I initially thought. In hindsight this should not be a surprise seeing how they were a 10 - 6 in 2019 and advanced to rd 2 in the playoffs.

  1. Even with Culley making that questionable decision to punt. I still feel like the team is better coached.
  2. Once Taylor left, the team seemed to have a let down.
  3. For what it's worth, I've been pleased with the offensive game plans in both games.
  4. Although the RBs run hard, the OL run blocking is still inconsistent. So far, I'm not impress with Cannon.

Mills looked better than Savage.

So there is that.
Hard to say. Mills did not see the pressure Savage did. OL pass protection has definitely improved over the last couple of years.

Thank God Mark Ingram can break tackles. I’m very disappointed with run blocking.

I’m also disappointed with Mills. He did not look ready to play. A couple of times he’s faking to his right & his RB is on his left. & he’s got wide open receivers he’s throwing back into the coverage.

But the Texans showed out better than expected & we’re about to see what kind of depth we got.

Culley on 610 said Cunningham was out for the 1st quarter for disciplinary reasons. As for why all he said was it was an internal matter.

I have a question. When Cunningham was benched for the 1st quarter did that cost him a quarter of his game check?

Major take is the injury bug struck and struck hard, basically costing us this game.
That bug was biting both sides.

The Texans looked good against that Cleveland run game. However, with the injuries to their OL, I was hoping we could keep them in check for 4 Qtrs. That’s a big ask.

They played well without Cunningham in the 1st Qtr. How much better would they have played with Cunningham? & how would that have set up the rest of the game? That’s the Texans tying one hand behind their back to fight George Foreman.

Blame Cunningham, blame Culley... it’s still on our side of the ball.

The penalty Culley declined so we can punt on 4-2. Deciding not to go for it on 4-2, I think there was another 4-1.... that’s on our side of the ball.

& there was several occasions Hunt or Chubb should have been tackled for negative yards, a couple by multiple defenders. Don’t get me wrong, Chubb is going to Chubb & Hunt is going to Hunt, but we had them in the backfield & we let them off the hook.

Still, I’m impressed about where this team is given what they’ve dealt with this off-season. & I’m optimistic, overall, for the rest of the season.

I’ve seen all I need to see on Mills. He sux and we suck when he is our QB.

Mayfield was 19 of 21 for 213 yards without Landry.
Chubb's YPC average was 8.6 on 11 carries.
Texans tackling was on par with last season. In other words, not good.

On a positive note, Taylor was fantastic in the first half. I wrote when it happened, signing him was a great move by Caserio, probably his best decision. Unfortunately, injuries have been a problem for him and so far this season it appears he's going to be fighting an uphill battle all season.

I'm probably in the minority here, I still don't feel good about this team, not at all, and I feel it's going to get worse before it gets better. Taylor is going to have a difficult time staying healthy this season and Mills looks like a guy that has a very, very limited ceiling. I also felt like the Browns played down to the Texans's level until the 4th quarter. And one of the big problems the Texans defense had last season was holding down the run game going into the 4th quarter.

Cully had some questionable decisions and Taylor got hurt. It was a totally different team in the 2nd half. But the team played hard and didn’t give up like past Texans teams have. I wasn’t thrilled about the Cully hiring, but I was wrong so far. This team has been coming out to fight.
Reid looks like a man on a mission so far this year.

A 3rd round rookie qb that made some decent throws in his first game action without practicing with the guys he’s thrown in with and you know he sucks?
Peyton Manning threw 11 interceptions to 2 tds in his first 4 games and he turned out ok.
Maybe give it more than a half before trying to evaluate a guy.

i agree that Mills need more time, but please don't bring up Manning's first game, or his rookie season.
I bet you didn't watch much if at all.

Texans stayed toe to toe with them in the 1st. Roberts muff was a killer.

Taylor continues to impress. He makes very few bad throws.

7 different receivers caught a pass last week, 9 different receivers caught a pass this week. I know there’s some around here who like spreading the ball around, but then you see that Cooks has 34% of the targets through 2 games, so is it really getting spread around? I’m in the camp of wanting the better players with the ball more, BTW, so I really don’t have issues here.

That said, I think that you really need to have more than zero of those other 8 guys who caught a pass all not having 2 or fewer.

2nd half, injuries started taking their toll, particularly the one to Taylor. Sucks that Nico couldn’t last past his 1 catch.

O-line made Garrett a total non-factor. Pass pro was good.

The run game still has issues. 2.9 YPC is not good. Hell, that’s much worse than they were getting last year.

Defense played well, for the most part, the secondary in particular I thought. Again, for the most part considering Baker completed 90% of his passes. Several times Baker was holding on to the ball, holding on to the ball, and that’s because he had nowhere to go with it. Of course, them losing Landry was a big deal.

Injuries and the Browns just being relentless running the ball, finally took its toll.

The Texans come out 2 weeks in a row looking prepared. Props to the coaching staff for that.

Culley did have his 1st real WTF moment when he declines a penalty that would have given them a 3rd and 10, but they take a 4th and 2 instead. Even if you’re plan was to go for it, which they didn’t, you still take 3rd down over EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. So instead of replaying 3rd, the penalty is declined to make it 4th down and they punt. Total brain fart.

I watched all of his first season...lived in Indy at the time. What you are insinuating is correct...even with Manning having a 2/11 TD/Int, Mills is nowhere near where Manning was. Not even in the same universe.

That's not a knock on Mills...the kid did his best. Manning was just a different animal.

Where are all the “draft capital“ people? You can’t tell me Cleveland and their loaded drafts over the last few years embarrassed a roster full of one year contracts? Lolol.
Exactly what loaded drafted players are you talking about? Other than Mayfield none have been overwhelming.

Not having patience is coded to the DNA of the NFL fandom.

That being said, criticism of Mills on this board is rather tepid comparatively speaking to some of the “stuff” being posted about Burrows, Wilson, Lawrence, and Fields on other boards.

One game does not make a career. Mills will have time to develop. He could either be a career back or be a quality starter in this league.
