Superdome to be destroyed?

CNN is reporting that Louisiana is likely to destroy the Superdome. I heard it today on SportsRadio610 and ABC/Channel 13.
 
The rumors are getting louder, and why not .... even if the building could be salvaged for mucho dollars, how could anyone go in there in the future and not have thoughts of the death and decay that took place.
It needs to be leveled.
 
Well the Saints got their wish. They have been really pushing for a new stadium for a while, and it looks like they will get it now. There is no way now that the NFL will move the Saints to some other city. The city will need the revenue, and it would be a PR nightmare to pull the team from the city and move it to LA or San Antonio. I also expect the next available Super Bowl to be in New Orleans.
 
With the amount of human excrament throughout the stadium and being unable to discard that for weeks, let alone months, has got to become a SERIOUS health hazard.
 
i think this means the saints are moving. after what happened, im sure football is the last thing on their minds.
 
Who will be left to go the games? Even if they do stay, could they even play there (in NO, not the dome) next season if they wanted to?

The Louisiana Superdome was so heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath that it likely will have to be torn down, CNN.com reported Tuesday, citing a a spokesperson for Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco.

Katrina sheared away much of the roof's covering, and water leaked into the stadium when it was used as a shelter for thousands of stranded residents.

The home of the New Orleans Saints is also the site of the annual Sugar Bowl and has hosted such events as the Super Bowl and college basketball's Final Four.

I doubt the Saints ever play a regular season game in New Orleans again. They have no stadium and i really doubt they will have one for atleast 3 to 5 years if it is true that they will tear down the superdome. The Saints were already on the short list for teams that could possibly leave their town and now with this tragedy i don't see any other option. That owner will lose millions if he tries to stick it out and we all know how the owners think....$$$$
 
I don't think the saints will leave new orleans now. They may be playing in baton rouge for the next two years, but the saints will be a part of the rebuilt new orleans and new orleans will hosts many more sugar bowls and superbowls in a great new stadium. This will certainly take a backseat to rebuilding residences and getting families back on their feet again, but, you can bet new orleans will be back better than ever!

They'll get a new stadium, it just won't be located in New Orleans.
 
They may need to replace the Superdome but ..... At this point in time New Orleans has MUCH more important things to spend $500 million or more on than a stadium . That should be the least of their concerns :twocents:

Sadly, they may be back better than ever, but it may be too late for the Saints. If they have no stadium to play in, there is no way they can stay. If they really do tear it down, they have so much other things to rebuild I doubt a $400 million dollar stadium would be first on the list.

No I think they could still play in Baton Rouge while the new stadium is built. Probably have the government pick up part of the bill. I'm sure for this stadium they will have to have a sponser, because I don't think the state wants to pick up the entire bill. The Panthers played in Clemson's football stadium for at least a season while their new stadium was being built. Baton Rouge is only 80 miles outside of the city. Bailing out of a city would look really bad for both the NFL and Benson. Especially since the team has a long history in the city. It's not like moving the Hornets, who had poor attendence numbers and have only been in the city for a few years. The Saints have been there for decades and have strong support. It would be like moving the Giants if the stadium was damaged during 9/11. Things like the Super Bowl and the Sugar Bowl bring huge revenue to the city, as well as just normal regular season games. I doubt anyone wants to cut and run on a city in need.

And to the question about who is going to go to games? There are still going to be several hundreds of thousands of people in the city after the city is rebuilt.
 
I think that remains to be seen. It's not JUST the stadium...it's the entire city. Who knows how many people will move back and when. I don't want them to move either, but the Saints and the NFL won't be the only business forced to move to another city just to survive.

Hopefully they can stay in Baton Rouge for awhile...but building a new stadium won't just take a season, they might not have one until 2008 or 2009 if they started one year from today. And I just don't see how they could possibly do that. They first have to getting funding from somewhere and a place to put it. I say it's better than 50/50 the Saints have played their last game in New Orleans. I hope I'm wrong, cause God knows I don't want other fans to have to lose a team like we did...especially on top of everything else they've already lost.
 
Honestly, they should move them to Los Angeles. The league needs a team in that market anyway.

New Orleans won't be ready to host another team for at least another 5 years...if ever. If/When they're ready, give them an expansion team. That entire region is going to be starting fresh. Might as well start with a new team as well.

The problem is while the NFL wants LA to have a team, LA really doesn't care all that much. They haven't been able to get a reasonable expansion or stadium proposal together for years now when they don't have a team. Give them a team in one of the current venues and what incentive are they going to have to build a new stadium, which we know the Saints want?
 
Whether or not NOLA is restored or rebuilt to its former dimensions, its hard
to see the team leaving the state. Could end up with the Louisiana Saints
instead of NO Saints who would play at some site in the state nobody knows about at this time.
Louisiana is a rabid football state and while not possessing a real large population, I don't think they have any trouble selling out the LSU games in
Baton Rouge. The biggest concern would the uncertainty about a sufficient
presence of Fortune 500 corporate residents to occupy the suites and provide revenues that all owners look to these days.

that's the biggest thing..there are plenty of rabid college towns that could never support the NFL.
 
So, where will their curent home games be played this year? Baton Rouge? I had a friend telling me the first few would be in San Antonio.
 
I heard on the radio yesterday that 4 of their home games will be played at the Alamodome. Their first home game against the Giants will be played in the Meadowlands and the rest have yet to be determined.
 
Baton Rouge in running to host Saints' games

BATON ROUGE, La. (Sept. 9, 2005) -- A shortage of hotel rooms, caused by Hurricane Katrina victims who fled the New Orleans area, is the main obstacle to the New Orleans Saints playing three of their home games at LSU's Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, a school official said.

The Saints reportedly are negotiating to play four games in San Antonio, where they have set up a temporary home since fleeing Katrina. One home game, against the Giants, already has been moved to the Meadowlands.

The newspaper said likely games to be moved to San Antonio are Oct. 2 against Buffalo, Oct. 16 against Atlanta; Dec. 4 against Tampa Bay and Dec. 24 against Detroit. The Oct. 2 date opened after the Builder's Showcase Expo at the Alamodome agreed to reschedule, dome director Mike Abington said.

The newspaper said the projected dates for Baton Rouge are Oct. 30 against Miami, Nov. 6 against Chicago and Dec. 18 against Carolina.

I cannot imagine they would keep it. With the amoutn of money they need to spend on rebuilding the city, rebuilding the superdome should be WAY down the list.

Forget IT .... I would NOT want the government to pick up the tab .... Thats a something that the City of N.O. should foot the bill for , Not the tax payers all over the USA. They may have gone thru a tragedy , lost a lot of lives and property but and I sure dont mind Taxpayer money going to re-build lives and homes and necessities but that is a pure luxury item and if they wat a stadium they should pay for it . :tomato:
