Super Bowl LI discussion

Sometimes I think that these coaches stay up night and just stroke their ego and tell themselves that they are geniuses and that they are not human. There is no other reason why the Falcons coach would even think about throwing the ball at the Pats 25 yrd line, up by 8 with 5 minutes to go. It just makes no sense.

Time of possession:
NE 40:31
ATL 23:27

But hey Atlanta saved those 2 timeouts. I'm sure the defense appreciated that.

And where even three points probably puts the game out of reach. But no, let's pass, take a sack, then get penalized, and punt, still up by only one score.

If he's not the GOAT then I just don't understand football.

A God among men. You just KNEW they were going to come back. And when they won the toss the game was over. He was on fire and nothing Atlanta threw at him was going to work.

Brady or Belichick?

Doesn't really matter they're both the best at what they do. I don't think the Falcons got tired like the NFL talking heads are saying. Belichick flipped the script at halftime.

I don't know the specifics on defense, but putting Malcolm Mitchell in the game & featuring James White our of the backfield put Atlanta on their heels.

Congratulations, Oilers fans. You no longer have the dubious distinction of the worst choke job in NFL postseason history. Yes, your 1993 debacle against Buffalo was a bigger lead to blow, but it wasn't on the biggest stage.
Sorry I don't feel any better.
Frank Reich =/= Tom Brady
It's one thing to have Brady come back on you. That's happened to many teams.
It's quite another to have backup Frank Reich come back on you.

That was the game, run the ball twice and kick a FG and it's over, but they had to get cute.

And now I have to hear greatest this and greatest that for the rest of my life

Ah yes, good ol Frank Reich. He planted the seed called apathy. If it weren't for him, the Tennessee Titans and the Houston Texans wouldn't even exist.

Life is a fork in the road.

What an amazing play by Edelman unreal.
The juggling catch? Can someone explain how the ref can say 'call confirmed. The ball did not touch the ground' there? 100% ball touched the ground. If you want to say 'call stands. Not enough evidence that Edelman didn't possess it before it touched', then ok, I get the ruling. Saying the ball didn't touch the ground was the wrong call.

Last time Atlanta got burned this bad by patriots Sherman was doing the burning.

What made William T. Sherman such a "patriot?" He was resolute in destroying the indigenous people of the United States, and for 15 years he lead the US Army that did it.

Sherman was also a racist who wasn't an abolitionist, but instead fought hard for segregation of troops. The only reason he let 40,000 slaves go free at the end of the war was to piss off white Southerners.

He was a nasty man in everything he did, including war atrocities both against southern men, women and children in the American Civil War and against the Indians.

Screw that dude.

Yes that play. It looked like a legit catch to me. I'd have to look at a replay that showed it hit the ground first. I thought he had a hand underneath the ball.

I don't know.. Im an anti conspiracy guy, but when I see a team doing everything possible to lose a game on purpose in the second half, it makes you wonder. I just don't understand why any coach would throw it when they had the game wrapped up if they just ran it?It just makes no sense. Everybody is just saying that it was nice comeback by the pats but things just don't add up.

It could have been a legit catch because Edelman could have possessed it before it touched the ground, but I thought for sure it touched the ground. FOX's booth review guy said the same thing before the ruling was announced.

It didn't touch the ground though

Never count out the GOAT

I was pulling for the Falcons, but giving credit where it's due, the Patriots played one heck of a game and deserved the win. I never counted them out and told a friend, there was still too much time on the clock to count the Patriots out. The huge mistake IMO was allowing a sack when in FG range. That stood out to me more than the fumble since that tends to happen at least once in many games. I just couldn't believe how the Falcons kept going backwards after being almost chip shot range when the game would have had more of a chance of being put out of reach.

That sack will haunt Matt Ryan for the rest of his life, I have no doubt.

Lol, I made a reference to that during the waning moments. Points to you, sir. :tiphat:

Lord almighty! Have y'all not learned anything? :gun:

I know I quoted this already, but I posted hastily due to things going on (a Falcon fan in the house..lol). All I have to add is that I don't recall anyone saying NE was done whereas if it were other teams we might have thought so.

I just saw your post as a "gotcha" post that had no foundation based on the previous posts.

It's all good, I know no harm was intended. :)

To put into perspective just how great Brady was here were his "weapons" that he used to break the SB passing record...

Backup RB - 14 catches
Undrafted slot WR - 8 catches
4th round rookie WR - 6 catches
Undrafted college QB - 5 catches
Backup TE - 5 catches
Undrafted lacrosse player - 4 catches

It never touched the ground
So you are telling me it doesn't hit the ground at the 29 second mark? I've got it f#cking paused and the tip of the ball has to be a good 2 inches away from his pinkie. If you want to say Edelman possessed the ball before it hit the ground then I have no arguement. The ref saying it was confirmed because it didn't touch is my only beef.

I don't know what you're watching but the ball never touched the ground.

It was a catch - he had control of the ball.
That aside, you can add all the superlatives you want but now, the people of New England have THAT win.
Bastards.
Congrats to the Pats.

He was wearing blue.

Seriously?

this game sorta highlights how badly the nfl needs to fix overtime. if anything, the falcons should've been given a rebuttal opportunity.

No, I don't agree with that even a little bit. If they had even held the Patriots to 3 they would have had a chance to answer it with either a FG of their own or a TD for the win but they didn't. They let New England drive the ball all the way down the field on their first possession of overtime and punch it in. They deserved to lose that game and they did.

I'm a big fan of the NFL version of overtime as opposed to that endless bullshit that the NCAA does where you see score after score blowing the stats all out of proportion and turning 24-24 ties into 51-45 wins with each team putting up 600 yards of "offense". In the old days when the NFL had a "First to score wins then THE END" system then yes, that could be unfair and often a coin toss gave one team a huge advantage but it's not too much to ask a team to simply keep their opponent from scoring a TD to earn their own chance to answer.

I'm impressed as hell with Brady but teams and more importantly organizations win championships. The New England Patriots have been to 7 Super Bowls since the Belichick regime took over there and I can't help but think that this kind of sustained success is organizational. I bet if Brady retired tomorrow that they would keep on grinding with Garoppolo. Brady is incredible, maybe even the GOAT but he's benefited his entire career from playing under one brilliant coach in one system that has slowly evolved over 17 years into what we see today. It's hard to judge whether he himself is the best of all time or simply one of the best with the benefit of an almost unmatched stable and winning organization.

That's very true. Having said that, the guy has ice in his veins and he is about as accurate as it gets. He's in a great situation, but he takes it to another level IMO.

He wasn't all that accurate last night which is uncharacteristic for him and still won.
To me it was the never say die attitude and the fact they recognised that Falcons D was done that got them home.

That's the thing that to me makes a more compelling case for him being the GOAT. Just the crazy amount of touch he seems to have on all his passes. You hardly ever see him putting too much or too little on a pass. He's like a machine when he gets in a groove and starts to look unstoppable after a while.

He struggled in the first half, but he was as accurate as you can be during the comeback. He may have missed one throw during that time, but he made a bunch of crazy accurate throws as well.
