Sumlin agrees to 6 year deal with TAMU

Has Sumlin ever had a relevant defense, ever? And is his offense nfl capable? I watch as much college football as anyone but really focus on specific players and player martchups. I don't pay attention to schemes and coaching enough to have a clue.

He had a great defense last year that all left for the draft like every other school in the SEC.

We have a whole bunch of 4 star prospects on defense that were forced to contribute this year because of injuries and depth. Undersized freshmen in the SEC? They stood little chance.

I'm calling it now, linebacker Darian Claiborne will be one of the best LBs in the SEC by his junior or senior year. He has been the one positive player on an awful run defense, and he's just an undersized true freshman. This defense will be decent next year and if Snyder can deliver what he's being paid for they should be great in two.

There is a bucketload of talent coming to College Station. The only missing ingredients are experience and depth.

Duke is well coached, I wouldn't underestimate them.

Not exactly sleeping on them but there are other teams I would have liked to face CFA Bowl is certainly not bad and Duke has had a good season. That being said, Manziel should be patched up in 3 weeks and playing like he was before the thumb, so I'm not sure if it'll be that much of a contest.

As I was reading about the Texans HC hunt came across this nugget. Thought it was interesting...

Another name to keep an eye on: Rapoport was told that Kevin Sumlin will receive attention from Houston brass. The Texas A&M coach recently agreed to a six-year deal with the Aggies, but he hasn't officially signed it.

Mike Sherman had agreed to an extension/raise the year he was fired. I believe the terms were agreed on near the beginning of the season, but university president sat on it and had not signed the contract by the time he was fired at the end of the season. They fought over whether or not they owed him the money on the new contract, though I'm not sure what happened with that.

Anyways, if the deal isn't completed officially, I don't think Sumlin is obligated to comply with it. If A&M wants him locked down, then they need to get that paperwork fast-tracked. Unless of course they are having second thoughts about paying 5 million a year for a guy who has never won a conference championship.

Details of his contract from ESPN:

A copy of the new contract was obtained by ESPN.com on Monday via an open records request. Here is a summary of the notable details:

• Sumlin signed the deal on Thursday.
• The new contract goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2014 and ends on Dec. 31, 2019.
• Salary is $5 million annually (up from $3.1 million in the contract he signed in January after the 2012 season).
• If Sumlin leaves before the end of the 2016 season (including any bowl game), he owes Texas A&M $5 million. After the 2016 season, there is no buyout on Sumlin's end.
• If Texas A&M terminates the contract at any time prior to the end date, it owes Sumlin whatever salary remains from the termination date to the end of the contract. Both Sumlin's and the school's buyout must be paid within 60 days of the termination date.
• The assistant coach salary pool remains the same as it was in his January contract: $3.4 million. The contract states that Sumlin and athletic director Eric Hyman will meet annually to mutually determine the salary pool and that the pool will be set at a level that can keep the Aggies competitive "with all the other top-tier SEC football programs."
• Sumlin's bowl game and championship game bonuses remain the same as they were in the deal he signed in January. He gets $100,000 for making the SEC championship game or $150,000 if the Aggies win the game.
• A bowl game appearance equates to a $50,000 bonus. If it's the AT&T Cotton Bowl, Capital One Bowl, Chick-Fil-A Bowl or the Outback Bowl, the bonus is $100,000. A BCS bowl appearance is $250,000 or $300,000 for a win.
• Appearance in the national championship game gets Sumlin $300,000. If the Aggies win the national championship, the bonus is $400,000.
• His bonus structure relating to the new College Football Playoff is essentially to be determined. The contract states that the parties "agree to negotiate in good faith with respect to a reasonable bonus structure" and that it will be "at least commensurate with other similarly situated programs for such a restructured BCS or such playoffs." This clause was in Sumlin's previous deal.
• Sumlin gets $50,000 for winning the SEC coach of the year honors and $75,000 if he's named national coach of the year by the American Football Coaches Association or the Associated Press. That's also consistent with his previous deal.
• The APR bonuses remain the same. An APR between 950-964 results in a $50,000 bonus, an APR of 965-974 means a $75,000 bonus and an APR of 975 or higher means a $100,000 bonus (about a third of each of those bonuses will be allocated to staff members with the rest going to Sumlin).

Digging up this old thread....

Sumlin just got a commitment from 5* Kyler Murray, plays at McAllen HS, the top ranked dual threat QB and a legacy commit (his pop was Kevin Murray, the old Aggie star from the 80s, career rec: 25-6-1).

This crazy recruiting should really pay off. With the monsters we're getting on defense and the offense we're putting together, we really should be in position to make a title run if Mark Snyder can make the defense even just average.

Murray's height and weight concerns me. 170 lbs and 5'10? He isn't yet 17 so it's not an immediate cause for concern, but still.

Damn. Brings back memories. Sherrill was my benchmark for coaches making halftime adjustments.

Edit: Made me go look up what Kevin Murray is up to these days. Link

#2 recruiting class

The win for A&M is another sign that the Aggies have capitalized on the popularity of 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, the production of multiple first-round NFL draft picks and the move to the Southeastern Conference to surpass rival Texas for in-state talent.

The Aggies now have commitments from two of the state's top three prospects in Murray and defensive tackle Daylon Mack (No. 15 recruit). They also are squarely in the mix for the top-ranked prospect in Texas, No. 12-rated Kendall Sheffield, who is a cornerback.

The state's top-ranked prospect in 2014 (No. 4 overall), defensive end Myles Garrett, also signed with Texas A&M.

The Aggies have ascended every year in the recruiting rankings under coach Kevin Sumlin, going from No. 15 in 2012 to No. 8 in 2014 and No. 4 this past year.

With Murray's pledge, the Aggies move up to No. 2 behind Alabama in the ESPN class rankings for 2015 with a group that is currently headlined by eight ESPN 300 prospects.

The kid is a another Manziel. He is freaken fast and has really good accuracy. Will be fun to watch, his height is the only thing that concerns me though.

Height doesn't matter in college. Only in the NFL.

Then this kid is the makings of Manziel 2.0 will be interesting to see how his college career plays out.

If the kid is anything like his daddy, he will be better than Manziel with a better arm...

Kevin Murray was a badass back in the day. I remember him and the Wrecking Crew beating Bo Jackson and Auburn in the Cotton Bowl...

This is my hope. Kyler Murray looks like a much better pocket passer right now than Manziel did in high school or his first year. His dad must have taught him well.

The Russell Wilson comparison here is much more accurate than w/ Manziel. Murray doesn't bail needlessly and from the videos I've seen looks like he prefers to extend the play and use his arms rather than his legs to beat the defense.

Daylon Mack 5* D Tackle, TAMU commit, just cancelled all his summer visits with Bama, LSU, etc. and Kemah Siverand, a 4* receiver, committed today.

Hoping to hear Malik Jefferson, Christian Kirk, and a few others put on Aggie hats soon. Good times are a'coming in Aggieland.

Nah, only the best he could budget with A&M boosters at the time. :kitten:

Ha, yeah. I watched that documentary about the Pony Express, there was, I think, an assistant coach that was talking about this LB that had committed to Texas A&M and he was trying to get to SMU.

They offered him $50,000 to come play for SMU and the LB said that was like $50,000 less what A&M had offered him....

crazy times back then

A&M's been loaded for a while, huh? :kitten:

Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin has announced the dismissal of two defensive starters after they were arrested for aggravated robbery on Tuesday.

Linebacker Darian Claiborne and defensive tackle Isaiah Golden both started as true freshmen last year and were expected to retain their roles for the 2014 season, reports ESPN’s Sam Khan Jr.

He's already going to potentially be better than Manziel who should have won back to back Heismans and left as a sophomore? :mariopalm:

Let the kid at least play a game or two, before calling him the next Manziel or a guy that will be better. Jesus Christ, talk about over hyping the expectations on some young kid.

I can't imagine Chavis leaving LSU for A&M but supposedly he still hasn't signed the new extension they offered him so you never know...

fwiw Texags' Billy Liucci is reporting that Sumlin has received a verbal agreement from his target. However, it's not known whether that target is Chavis or DJ Durkin from Florida.

Sumlin himself said at the presser for the bowl game that he expected something to happen within the week for all three open positions (O-line, D-Co, and WR coach).

Insider noise on the LSU side is reporting that Chavis wants out. A&M side more tentative because no official deal has been made, but reporting the same thing otherwise.

I'm assuming Chavis because all the Michigan insiders that called Harbaugh to Michigan are calling Durkin to UM as well.
