NFL considering not inviting ineligible players to Combine

The NFL is considering not inviting players who are academically ineligible in college to the Combine, a league source told CBSSports.com.

The move is being discussed because of the increased scrutiny on the maturity and commitment of the prospects entering the NFL, the source said, adding that if this measure was in place in 2013, a sizable group of players would not have been invited to Indianapolis for the Combine.

This is a JOKE...........just typical NFL disingenuous reactive window dressing. Between this anticipated move and the colleges passing those that should rather be placed in high school remedial reading............the same cross-section of flunkies and thugs will find their way to the NFL field. The NFL could have had just as much effect on the selection process by eliminating all players with tattoos covering more than 93% of their body surface.............:mariopalm:

I think they should punish the team if their players get into trouble. It will allow teams to take chances on players with character questions, give them incentive to keep an eye on these players, & encourage them to step in before it gets too late.

If the Patriots saw issues with Hernandez, they could have documented it, fined him, suspended him, or something. When this double murder thing came out the league could look at that & say, "You noticed the problem, you took action, we're going to fine you." However if this was going on & the Patriots had no documented knowledge, "This is unacceptable, you don't have a clue who you're employing/empowering, we're going to fine you & since Hernandez was a 4th round pick, we're going to take a 4th round pick."

I'm definitely agreeing with you. But if the teams take someone with a known dubious history, they should be made to share the consequences simultaneous to that player's FIRST infraction.

I dunno. This doesn't seem like a bad thing to me. Players who miss the combine will hurt their draft stock because pro-days don't hold as much weight.

So players who blow off school because they are going pro will actually hurt themselves and potentially lose millions if they screw around enough to become academically ineligible. Plus, like the article says, not staying eligible for the pro day shows a lack of maturity. And thus schools will be encouraged to help athletes stay eligible even though they know they won't be playing next year.

I see it as a move that will backfire against the NFL, at least in a marketing sense.

A league that keeps trying to increase revenue by selling stuff tlike the combine to the public needs to be more INclusive of potential draft choices. Why tune in if "your guy" won't be making an appearance?

It'llb e about as effective as the new bag rules...nothing more than window dressing.

I think that all college players ought to be screened for character issues and some should be declared ineligible for the NFL based on character and behavioral issues.

The NFL is a prime employer, and it should require more than just raw talent to play in the league.

Could be a very good screen, if it resulted in ineligibility for the NFL BUT this move does not declare any player ineligible for the NFL..........just ineligible for the Combine.........we all know that under the proposed rule talent will still be sought out even it takes an "end around" the Combine move...........The amount of extra effort and money a team may spend in this pursuit if Bupkis in the big picture

I'm sure this has nothing to do with PR and protecting the image of "the shield" by hiding away the dangerous & dumb NFL prospects from the now prime time NFL Combine audience.
