Steel B's Offseason plan

Cut Cushing/L. Miller, Restructure JoJo to 3.5 mil per yr for 2 yrs.

This should give you 45 mil to play with in FA.

FA signings

Kyle Fuller CB Fuller is a young guy who had a very solid season for the Bears (4 yrs 36 mil)
Justin Pugh RG/RT. 4 yrs 24 mil
Chris Hubbard RT (He can really play anywhere on the OL) 4 yrs 20 mil
Luke Wilson TE (Time to bring Luke Home, he provides a well rounded vet TE option.) 4 yrs 12 mil
Colt Anderson S (Has ability to become a starting strong safety. Great ST's guy) 3 yrs 6 mil
Orleans Darkwa- RB Replaces what Miller gives them at half the cost. 3 yrs 6 mil.
Cody Latimer WR Great gunner on ST's, still has room improve as a WR. 2 yrs 6 mil

I'm not a cap guy and this is me guessing at contract values that are provided by Spotrac. There should be room to sign Clowney to long term extension.

Draft I'm trading a 2019 2nd and a 2018 3rd to move up into the top 40 or so. I'm also trading a 2019 3rd to get another 2018 4th. this pick should be in the 75-85 range.

Rd.2 Tyrell Crosby Ot, Oregon. I think he can be a starter on Day 1. Strong, techicnally sound, long arms, good feet. On the short side for a LT at 6'4.

Rd.3 Wyatt Teller OG Va. Tech. Very underrated guy, technically sound, can get to the 2nd level. strong at the point of attack. This guy wasn't talked at the Sr Bowl, but I think this guy can be a long time starter and start at RG early in his career.

Rd.3 Holton Hil CB Texas, 1st rd talent, great speed, feet and ball skills, Honor student in high school, who played in the band. Got in trouble at UT for smoking pot. I talked to his parents at a game this yr and they told me that they got him the help he needed and has grown up. They said he understands now that if he wants to play in the NFL, he's got to leave the weed alone. This pick is a ricks but one that I would take at the end of the 3rd rd.

Rd.4 Alex Cappa OT/OG Humbolt St. This guy plays with a mean streak. He can start early as an OG. He had trouble with speed at the Sr Bowl but looked really good when moved inside to OG. Cappa has the ability to grow into a very good RT. Already better than Breno.

Rd.4. Kellen Balage RB Arizona St. A big RB with great speed, he's got good hands, really good vision. I liked the way he finished his runs. Got nicked up some in college, nothing serious. He reminds me of Arian Foster with the way glides when he runs and then explodes thru the hole.

Rd.6 Martez Carter RB Grambling. Explosive RB/Return guy, A big play waiting to happen, huge upgrade for the ST's. This yrs Tarik Cohen.

Rd.6 Will Richardson OT Noth Carolina St. Richardson has great feet for a huge man. Didn't allow a sack last yr. Got suspended for 2 games but I could find out why. He's got the talent to start someday. A good developmental guy. Value pick.

Rd.6 Jordan Thomas TE Miss St. Huge guy who at 6'6 275 will provide the blocking element to the TE position. ( Wilson/Anderson/Thomas is a very well rounded TE group. Fiedo hopefully retires.) Thomas has surprisingly good speed and hands. They even split outside some last yr at Miss St. Thomas could eventually end up as a LT like Jason Peters. Good value pick.

Rd.7 Dane Cruikshank CB Arizona, big CB that will be and outside guy probably will run high 4.5/low 4.6. This guy could move to S. Glover Quin? Good ST's guy.

Rd.7 Nantrell Jamerson- FS Wisconsin, Developmental FS, Has a nose for the ball. Great ST's guy.

My offseason plan makes the OL alot better and provides badly needed talented depth. Add speed to the secondary, adds a couple of young speedy RB's that are upgrades and a vet RB whose best football is ahead of him. ST's should be improved with ST aces Anderson/Latimer and draft picks Cruikshank/Jamerson/Carter added. For sure team speed will be improved.

I put alot of time into this and would love to get others thoughts .

appreciate effort and enjoyed the read. I think Joseph will get offer but will have to turn down money elsewhere to accept a low deal with Houston. Home may be the only chance for him to play in Super Bowl.

I like it, but I would prefer Penny over Balage I think

And how many of the FA's do they have to hit on to make you happy?

I like it a lot. However, I think you may have missed an opportunity to increase the FA dollars. I would cut Allen and gain something like 3 mill. More in cap space. Other than that very well done and thanks for the effort.

If you could get those OL , you'd be on Watson's Christmas card list .

You can get them. You've just got to pay them in FA and move up into the 2nd Rd to get Crosby. I may miss a little on draft slots for Teller/Cappa, but you could substitute Braden Smith and Austin Corbett and get about the same value.

The cap is certainly not a strength of mine. In fact keeping up with that is way over my head. LOL

Penny will be gone before the 4th. IMHO

The 2 OL, Pugh/Hubbard you really need to hit on, as well as K. Fuller because they are where you're spending most of your cap and those are the greatest positions of need. Good thing is these guys are still young and have their best football ahead of them.

The ST's guys should be a given as a hit. Latimer is a great gunner. 3rd to Taiwan Jones and Matthew Slater in the entire NFL. Anderson is also an upper echelon ST's guy.

Darkwa/Wilson are backups who have performed well when given the chance. Wilson is an avg receiver and an above avg blocker.

To answer your question Hubbard/Pugh/Fuller/Wilson, so 4 or maybe 5.

You're probably right, but seeing his performance decline this yr no way do I pay him more than 3.5/4 mil.

I think Joseph will get close to 5 mil because history pays

He'll get at least a 2 year deal for 9.375 mil contract with 4.8 guaranteed.

Where do I get the #'s you ask? Like most everything elae around here....

I forgot to add Fitzy at 3 mil per yr to the FA list.

Roster would look like this, Offense 25

QB, Watson/Fitzy
RB Darkwa/Bellage/Carter/Blue
OT's Hubbard/Crosby/Davenport/Richardson
OG's Pugh/Teller/Cappa
C Mancz/Martin (I worry about Martin's ankle)
TE's Wilson/Thomas/Anderson
WR's Hopkins/Fuller/Miller/Latimer/Ellington
K Fairbairn
LS Weeks

Defense 24
DE Watt/Covington/Watkins/Heath
NT Reader/Dunn
ILB McKinney/Cunningham/Peters/Heeney (ST's guys)
OLB Clowney/Mercilus/Lewis/Cole
CB's JoJo/Fuller/Hill/KJo/Cruikshank
S KJax/Hal/Anderson/Jamerson
P Lechler

IR Foreman

A solid young team that just added toughness and speed.

Then I dont know if I would pay up or not. Gaine would have the cap room if he wanted too. But after seeing JoJo's decline I couldn't feel good about giving him 2 yrs 10 mil. Maybe 2 yrs 8 mil. and I'm not even sure how I would feel about that.

You've only got 49 on the roster... what are you doing with other 4?

A developmental QB/CB and another couple of DL. Maybe a developmental pass rusher.

But those 49 are who I would want on the field every Sunday. I know you can only have 47 on gameday.

You should check out Hubbard, I think he's really pretty good and may even be able to play a serviceable LT.

they would certainly be clearing much of the current chaff off of the roster... Hopefully McOBG share your vision

The roster was really lacking in talent in the OL /DB's and overall depth. Desparate times call for desperate measures. A developmental QB I would like to see brought in is Kyle Allen UDFA and has the ability to make it in the NFL.

Or Mike White if we could get him in 6/7th range

:headhurts:

Some serious thought put into this. Just focus on draft evaluation rest will work itself out with plenty of help from experts who reside on this board.

I would love to see Texans snag Hernandez early 3rd big, nasty, high motor and quick feet add Penny other 3rd. Jacoby was closest thing Texans ever had to him, also taken in 3rd but Penny actually has great mitts.

Prefer no more trading up to address needs, cost is just too high and Texans needs seem to be growing not shrinking. Also could restructure all their own players to match need, worth and production instead of just casting off without trying. I’m actually less inclined to extend Clowney with a big Watt contract, rather take it one year at a time and franchise if need be, too much dead wood already. Have Texans ever resigned one of their own elite players for big contract and seen it work out (Foster, Watt, Cushing just to name a couple)?

Steelbtexan....I like your post but at the same time I'm in full agreement with beerlover in regards to trading away 2019 picks for this draft. This draft is deep and rich in athletes that fit the Texans areas of need. Again, this process doesn't have to be rushed and with the amount of holes to address the groups decisions must be sound with smart moves being the order of the day....even if it takes a couple of seasons to get this thing back on track.

Before I would cut anyone for cap savings, I've got to see if there is any market value them. I mean, if I'm going to dump these players anyways, getting a RD7 in 2018 or 2019 certainly beats a sharp stick to the eye. If there are no takers, then release them and move forward.

Good job SteelB, appreciate the time an effort you put into this thread, your 2018 offseason plan.

I wouldn't be opposed to any of these moves honestly. I'm not a fan of trading away future picks BUT if the right guy is on the board, make the move. We're closer than some people think. All these moves would def put us in a better position. Hopefully this also improves ST; a place where speed and toughness has been lacking. Good job steel. Appreciate the work!

What could you get for Allen/Cushing/Miller given their contracts? I suppose you could give it a try, but you probably would get LOL'ed at.

XSF/Breno/Clark are FA's who need to be gone. I might think about bringing Clark back. But if it impedes making the moves I proposed above Clark is a goner.

As far as trading future 2nd for Crosby, if you think Crosby is a future LT, (I do) then spending a 2nd and a 3rd on the LT of the future is less than spending a 1st on your LT of the future. Plus Gaine has an extra 2nd rder from the DB trade.

I really like Bellage and Cappa, the only way I could figure out how to add a very talented RB and a promising OL in this draft was to trade a 2019 3rd.

I really like this draft class for the Texans needs more than the 2019 class so I make the moves to add talent this yr. Plus your 2019 draft picks would look like this after these proposed trades. This doesn't include comp picks. You lose your 2019 3rd and it's worth it to get a RB as Bellage. I get that you wouldn't want to trade future picks if you aren't high on Crosby/Bellage. (I am) I would make these trades because these guys are very talented and fill hole. This is about talent in this class vs the 2019 class. IMHO

Follow Oregon and Crosby will struggle if thrown into the fire. Several teams should have interest in Bellage which means he will be overdrafted.

Man you really try hard, I know it’s frustrating, been doing it 15 years but what has it gotten us? Grey hair or no hair at all. I’m just excited to have a new GM instead of that nitwit Rick.
