Steel B's Bye Week Mock

Rd.1 Shaq Thompson OLB/ILB Washington, 6'2, 231 Lbs 4.56. Thompson is the most athletic LB in this draft. He has speed enough to play from sideline to sideline and has no problems covering TE's. (Something most Texans fans have never seen.) As an added bonus Thompson is also a very good RB.

Rd.2 Jake Fisher OT Oregon, 6'6, 292 5.22, Fisher is my favorite OT in this draft. He's played both LT/RT, has great feet and plays with a mean streak. Fisher is a massive upgrade over Newton etc....

Rd.3. Antwan Goodley WR Baylor 5'10 225 Lbs 4.49, Goodley reminds me of a much faster Anquan Boldin. Big, thick slot WR with great speed, especially for his size. He's got good hands and will be a weapon from the slot. Goodley has the speed the Texans are sorely lacking.

Rd.4 Phillip Dorsett WR Miami, 5'10 185 LBS 4.38, Dorsett is the fastest WR in this yrs draft. He lacks strength but is water bug quick which allows him to beat press coverage. He has good hands and is very fluid. Dorsett will also help in the KR/PR game. The only reason Dorsett falls this far is due to a a partial MCL tear. If healthy Dorsett is a steal at this point in the draft. He would give the Texans a true homerun hitter in the DeSean Jackson mold.

Rd.5 Trenton Brown OG/OT Florida, 6'8 350 Lbs, 5.48. I watched this mountain of a man open huge holes for Fla' run game against Georgia. He's nimble for such a huge guy. Brown has played all over the line so versatility is a strength. I can only imagine Foster running behind the beef that is D.Brown/Trenton Brown/Brooks/Fisher. I'm a build the trenches 1st kinda guy and Brown is a player.

Rd.6 Mike Hull ILB/OLB Ped St. 6'0 232 Lbs 4.63. Hull is one of the better LB's that I've seen play. He's very instinctive and is always around the ball. Team leader. He has suffered a knee/back and shoulder injuries. The only reason he falls this far. Played for O'Brien and O'Brien loves this guy. Hull has good speed to cover TE's and never misses run fits. Aggressive yet controlled, Hull reminds me of Sean Lee. I would trade up to get Hull as high as the 4th rd.

Rd.7 Micheal Dyer RB Louisville 5'9 215 Lbs 4.50, Dyer has great vision and acceleration. He scored the GW TD for Auburn in the national championship game. He understand pass protection and can catch the ball. Good speed, the only reason Dyer is available is due to past issues smoking pot. The 7th rd is a good place to take a chance on a talented but troubled player like Dyer.

I wasn't able to add speed to the secondary. I like Prewitt a lot but think he will be gone by the 2nd rd. I really don't like any of the CB's in the 1st two rds of this draft.

This mock adds badly needed speed to the LB/WR corps. I drafted the fastest players available at those spots. Luckily these guys can play football as well as run fast. Being a build in the trenches guy I took a couple of big OL with good movement skills and mean streaks. Rick Smith could only hope he drafts this well. LOL

Feedback is greatly appreciated in Steel B's Mock Draft 1.0.

I'm glad someone took the time & effort to put forth a bye week mock, rep!

Just watched the Washington UCLA game last night. Hundley is on fire, looks much more engaged. Thompson was chasing him all night long. Fisher is probably going to be overdrafted so second is very possible, but he lacks core strength & will have to develop. I would compare him to David Quessenberry coming out of San Jose State far less covered but similar OT prospect. Baylor is a very interesting team with a lot of NFL talent, should be some good value in 3rd/4th if team needs to add WR but two? Maybe slide in a RB who can catch out of the backfield to challenge Foster or at least fill in during his down times. Can't help notice no QB? would like to see you stand behind one of this years prospects, Lol.

I like that you took multiple shots to improve our OL. I like that you took multiple shots at the LB position. To me, that's the way "top priority" should be addressed, not just taking that position in the early rounds.

I like that these guys are taller than 5'8" but is 5'10" really "big" for a WR?

His height may not be "ideal" for some there but at 5'10 225lbs that is bulk for a WR. He is definitely a good prospect for the slot.

Great work SteelB! I like your mock, but I think we really have to address the safety position. Is there no one out there or do you think we can add a FA?

1. Shaq Thompson - LB, Washington
- I love Shaq Thompson. Guy is an elite level playmaker. I'm not sure about his edge rush ability but I guess you could play him at SLB in base defense and move Reed inside while playing him as a Nickel LB in other packages. Wherever he plays he needs to be utilized in space because he's impossible to game plan for when you let him roam. I would love this pick.

2. Jake Fisher - OT, Oregon
- Fisher is also one of my favorite OT's in this draft. I could see him playing either OT position and agree he would be an upgrade over Newton (especially in pass protection). He could even supplant Brown on the left side if his play does not improve.

3. Antwan Goodley - WR, Baylor
- I'm not as high on Goodley as others. I see a project when I look at him. Great speed and good bulk, but he's very raw. I actually think he has a higher ceiling as a RB than as a WR.

4. Phillip Dorsett - WR, Miami
- Dorsett is certainly intriguing because of his speed, but he doesn't really bring much else to the table. Despite his speed, he rarely gets open unless he's running straight and his hands are inconsistent. I've heard a lot of DeSean Jackson comparisons, but I just don't see it. He doesn't jump off the tape like Jackson did. I wold much prefer a guy like Tyler Lockett to Dorsett. He's not quite as fast, but is a much better football player.

5. Trenton Brown - OG/OT, Florida
- Not familiar with him at all. We need OL though.

6. Mike Hull - ILB, Penn State
- Hull is a beast inside the box. Could possibly supplant Cushing as our run stuffing LB and make him expendable (hurts to say but I think it's true). He's a bit limited as an athlete, but when you're playing in the box every down that doesn't matter nearly as much.

7. Michael Dyer - RB, Louisville
- He could be this year's Isaiah Crowell. Not quite as talented as a runner, but character concerns have similarly hurt his draft stock way more than any lack of talent. He's a complete back who can run, block, and catch. Certainly worth a late round pick.

Overall I like it, but I think you're putting too much emphasis on speed in some places. Don't get me wrong, we are absolutely on the same page as far as this team and it's need to increase team speed to compete. But I don't think we should sacrifice talent for speed. My main example being I would never draft a guy like Dorsett if a guy like Lockett was also available. Great job though and appreciate the effort.

Thanks,

I like Carden the best. He's smart/accurate and seems to work hard at improving. He doesn't appear to be skittish in the pocket. This is what scares me about Hundley. He looks very skittish under pressure.

Team speed is this teams biggest need. IMHO This mock helps fill this need, all of these guys can move. Even the OL are very athletic.

Prewitt is the only safety in this class that I have seen that will be a true difference maker. If Thompson isn't there I would really consider Prewitt at 15. I also like McKinney a lot, but Thompson is more of a sure thing and a true difference maker.

1.Agreed on Thompson.

2.Fisher will be a 10 yr starter and plays with the kind of tenacity that I like. Fisher has the frame to gain 15 lbs and not lose his agility.

3.I like Goodley because of 2 things. 1. He has big play ability written all over him. 2. Goodley is new to the WR position and has all world type talent. His best football is ahead of him.

4.I get what you're saying with Lockett vs Dorsett. But the Lockett family really hasn't done much in the NFL. Dorsett has a much higher upside and if I'm going to error when picking a WR it will be an error on the side of speed. The Texans have needed a burner on the outside for yrs. Since Dorsett has been hurt I think that his best football may be ahead of him. Sort of like a Torrey Smith.

5. Brown is a massive human being. I know that his best football is ahead of him if he wants a career in the NFL. Versatile with good movement skills in the 5th rd. I'm on board.

6. Hull is one of my favorite LB's in this draft. Tough/smart/ hard nosed football player. I think he's faster than you give him credit for. Hull is a BOB favorite. What did you think about my Sean Lee comparison?

7. The Texans would never take a chance on a guy like Dyer, but I would. He's as talented as any RB in this draft not named Gurley.

This can't be said enough! At all positions but primarily in the secondary and at LB... and we NEED a burner at WR

Striker and Ray are two other athletic LBers that could be had other than Thompson

I agree I'm all in on Thompson
He is as gifted as they com
He reminds me of Troy P.
He is a LB that is a Safety

Most say he is a 43 baker but I think he can do anything in any scheme. Thompson is a defensive weapon much like Watt is a defensive weapon and a few others I view Thompson the same with his utility and abilities and instincts

He is my #1 must have defensive player in the 2014 draft
As Mariota is my #1 offensive player must have.

I love Thompson. He reminds me of Thomas Davis, who was absolutely fantastic before he tore his knee up multiple times.

Yep

He would be a perfect fit for RAC's defense.

I beginning to doubt that Thompson falls to the 10-15 range. (Where I think the Texans will be picking. What do you think about McKinney? He's very good. But no Thompson. IMHO What range do you think McKinney goes?

I think McKinney is a top ten player but I'm not sure if he will go in the top ten. A lot of people are projecting him as an ILB because that's where he plays for Miss St but I don't think that's his best position at the next level. ILBs aren't considered as important as edge rushers so he is lower on most draft boards than he should be due to position.

I'd move him outside in a 34 and let him be a jack of all trades. He can rush the passer, play the run, and cover a little bit. A bigger, less (but still very) athletic Khalil Mack. He'd take Reed's spot across from Clowney.

No QB? This draft puts alot of faith and pressure on Ryan Mallett and/or Tom Savage. I like Fisher but I think we'll re-sign Newton at RT since he's finally healthy and playing well. No sense creating more holes than we already have and I don't think Newton will be expensive to re-sign. I like who and where you took a RB, low risk high reward scenario. You've got several guys I'm not familiar with. Goodley's size screams RB to me, not WR and I prefer my WR's taller. Brown seems almost to big. At 6'08" I think he'd have trouble with leverage at OG going against a shorter NT.

What do you have against the 1st round CB's, other than Ekpre-Olomu being to short?

McKinney has the athletic ability to cover TE's. How much of an upgrade would he be over Reed IYO?

Mckinney is going to be a high selection just because of what he has done in college with his size speed combination and measurements plus production

Is what you get with Mckinney

He is a rare big fast rangey backer that can cover

Most backers have to put on weight and catch up to nfl speed ... Mckinney is one of the rare inside guys that would be plug and play. He is 6'5 250 lbs with reported 4.4 speed prolly 4.5... he is no Kuechly as far as sideline to sideline and check with me player but he is a freak no doubt about it. Some one like him with his gifts in the middle will be desirable and I could see all these backers going in the top 25. But they are all top 15 talent unfortunately for them need comes into play when it is draft day. But I see Thompson as a top 10 player and I see ray as a top 15 and Mckinney a top 20 and striker a top 25.

Pretty significant.

I think he's an upgrade in every area except playing the run, where I would say he is equal.

He would also be very useful in the nickel package as well. He's definitely someone I've had my eye on for us.

Depends on what you're looking for when it comes to a LB. Thompson can do it all. (Like Mack last yr) McKinney can rush the passer and is good but not as good as Thompson in coverage. (Still a top 15 pick and if Thompson is gone I probably take McKinney for the Texans at the 10-15 range.) Ray is an edge rush guy only, (Like Aldon Smith) but not as gifted.

Fisher would be a huge upgrade over Newton, who is only avg on a good day. If I couldn't draft Mariota I would probably pass and hope that a FA QB comes on the market like Palmer/Smith.

Goodley runs really fast and those RB skills with his build would be a huge upgrade in the slot over D.Johnson. Goodley got nicked up and missed a few games. Otherwise he would be drafted late 1st/early 2nd. He has a unique skillset with the talent level to match. Tell me, which Texan skill position guy has a unique skillset?

I get what you're saying but trust me he was moving people off the ball against Georgia. A very strong man that can be physically dominating.

Here is a list of the 2015 free agent QBs - Link

Not seeing anything there with Hoyer at the best of the list.

Hoyer could be let go.

Foles/Cutler could become available. Then you've got the Bradfords/Orton's/Locker's of the world.

That doesn't even bring up guys like Johnny Football. So yes, I do think there will be vet QB's available. However, what I would like to see most is Mallett tear it up the rest of this season. (Probably not going to happen.)

I would hope everyone would be cheering for Mallett regardless of their predictions.

Don't see Foles being available although I wouldn't mind it happening. Other than that or Hoyer, I'd beotch and being looking at another wasted year with any of the others you mentioned. Would have a very Grudden arrogance feel about it of "my system is so good I can just keep throwing cheap QBs at it."

I said last year I applauded OB if he stood up to pressure if he didn't see what he liked but it was a one year pass.

Agreed on the 1 yr pass thing.

I've got a feeling either Mallett or a Vet QB that is a legit starting QB in the NFL is playing QB for the Texans.

I think Thompson will go very high and Mckinney top ILB in the 20s

I think your sleeping on Ray. Have you seen or heard of his workouts and reportedly his times and things he can do... plus what he has done on the field.

Dude has been turning heads and there's a reason why.
