State of the Texans Fan

Kaiser Toro

Native Mod
Not one thread has been started by a Texans fan under a positive conotation after today's victory. Two threads were started saying great/good win by a Jags and Steelers fan. Another fan is willing to take the blame for a win.

I am as guilty as anyone for not starting one, but it is a non stop battle with the Bush trolls (that would be Reggie in case the NSA is eavesdropping).

It's hard to get excited about a win when the team is virtually a "lame duck" team. Obviously not "lame duck" like the Oilers were since we will have a team on the field next season, however in the sense that we are not building towards anything right now. We all know the coaches will be gone next season, hopefully the GM, and who knows who will be on the field for us next year.

At least in the first 3 seasons we always felt like we could build on wins and see a future, however not this season. This team will (or should) be torn down and started over from scratch next season.

Now next season will be different. There will be no real expectations and we will have a new staff. I think fans will be more excited about wins next season because the team will be building towards something.

Have to agree with Hookem. Although as much as I try I can't do anything but root for this team to win, it really is rather pointless now. Capers firing is all but a foregone conclusion. The Texans team we've been watching for the past few seasons is breathing its dying breaths, but we'll have new hope for next season once this season ends. Hard to get too happy about a win when you know it has so little effect on the team in the long term.

Footballl is still football, and from the fan attendance today most season ticket holders should be ashamed of themselves. Fair weather fans is what I saw on TV today due to the empty seats. There was a Super Bowl MVP and 2 electrifying WR's on Cardinals today. I'm a fan of a team and watch them no matter what the record is.

I say hooooray in not the sarcastic crack a joke way but in the actual truthful I mean it way.:redtowel:

I liked seeing our team stomp their team down to their third string QB. I liked seeing our secondary play with pride and hit hard. I liked seeing no answer to our running attack and a 25 TD run. I liked seeing no quit past the 00:00s that dint show up on the jumbotron.

Because I ALWAYS love seeing my team stomp the other team. ALWAYS. I wanna stomp the Jags. I wanna stomp the 49ers, and I wanna keep that stomping going into the next season. I'm being patient about this as it relates to the Texans, but I want to see my stompings.

Maybe I need to do the pregame talks, see e.g.

Queen o the Texans Post where me said in part:

I would also tell them that I don't want to keep the game close. I would tell them that I would like for them to destroy the other team like no other, so that refs can't take the win away, or flukes can't take the win away, and that you can't make up for all the losses on one Sunday, but a good old fashion *** whooping of the other team sure would feel good and get people to STFU.

And it was nice to see. Statistically not so much a whooping, but scoreboard says beautiful things.

Most of our players are young and learning every week. They need to learn to win. And get that feeling.

As for the STFU part of it, I guess there won't be any more tanking talk this week, instead the stupid talkshow stuff will say that adding Dan Reeves caused the team to play better, which would be I think on the silly list of opinions given the improved play of late against badish teams, though I guess there is no way to know for sure. The tanking talk will prolly come back the last week against the 49ers unless we beat the hell outta the Jags too, which would be a lovely Christmas gift in a bow, because the Jags deserve miserable end of season losses because they are the Jags.

To all the Bush trolls, I guess my view of that is both rational and irrational. The rational part is that as a fan, I cannot root for my team to lose. I just can't root for the sickness that is losing. It is vomity.

The completely irrational part is that despite my love of logic, statistics, rational civil argument and observable reality, I believe in jinxes. Absolutely. I think it is a total jinx to wish ill to your team for a draft pick. That it will result in really bad stuff.

I say to honor the NFL, you have to play hard and try to win and if you don't it is just bad mojo. Kinda like Barbara Bush gathering her purse before Pujols is outta the box. You just can't do that. I tried to warn her by yelling at the TV screen, but that don't work so good. Ayyyyyyy--the flashbacks--I'm haunted.

I believe in the Rolling Stones school of draft order:

No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

(And no I am not advocating need based drafting over talent--I am just saying that you should just sit back, relax, let the season end, let the bowl season end, and sees what comes to pass--sometimes in life whatever is best for you happens, even though the outcome is not what you originally wanted. And maybe to some degree, the losing season is the thing we needed and not wanted, but you can't actually wish for that because that is just asking to be jinxed and be banished by the NFL gods for perpetual loserdom).

So let's give cheer during this holiday season:

Hooooray for the Texans win!:redtowel:
Hooooray for the Cryboys getting whooped.
A lovely Sunday and a beautiful sunset.

(Oh, and I hope the losers with the sacks on their heads sitting near the Texans bench stepped in gum as they slinked outta the stadium. Not a charitable thought on my part, but they should feel fortunate that my eyeballs don't shoot out metric laser death beams. Wearing sacks on your head for the edification of NFL films is vulgar, unoriginal and tacky. I'm just saying).

I am glad they won. If you sit and watch the Texans play cheering for them to lose than I question your loyalty to the team. I dont care who that upsets, it is how I feel.

I hope we beat Jax and San Fran and then lose out on Bush and trade down, take a Tackle, a Safety and a Guard and then all of a sudden this team is better than ever and all the Reggie lovers will still be whining that we did not take him.

*sigh* you just cant win with some.

You want to know what the state of this Texans fan is? I'll tell you what my "state" is. When it comes to the NFL my home state is the state of Tired. I'm tired of this "Bataan Death March" of a season and can't wait for it to end. There is nothing to look forward to in the Texans immediate future that can possibly take place while the 2005 season remains in progress.

Even the wins are ugly as sin. I'm sorry but I cannot stand to watch David Carr throw that quick out to AJ fifteen times per game. Yes we can run the ball and I like watching a good running game as much as the next guy but man, this offense that averages four yards per throw is horrible. Give me a couple of months to practice that pass and I can run that offense. Plus I only cost a one million dollars as opposed to eight million.

I want this season to end. That's all I want. Everything else will come along once this un-ending, un-enjoyable season is over.

Spoken by somebody that hasn't put his own money on the line for his own season tickets.

As of this morning, we owned the worst record in the league. As of this afternoon, we're still tied for that distinction. Season ticket holders have nothing to be ashamed of. We have NOT gotten our money's worth this year.

And now, with the league's No.1 draft selection right within reach, the team will do their best to cap the worst season in professional sports I've ever had the displeasure of paying for by screwing up and winning another game for "pride". If they truly had any pride they wouldn't have lost to the Rams. Or the Ravens. Or the Titans. Their meager scraps of pride this late in the season will only hurt the team in the long run.

You want empty seats? Having next year's No.1 pick would be our reward for sitting through this JV-quality garbage we got stuck paying for this year. I've given serious thought to whether the commitment of my time and money is worth it. Having next year's No.1 pick would lead me to believe it might. Winning out and ending up with something like the No.5 pick after suffering through this season will only be the ultimate sharp stick in the eye of the season ticket holders. Keeping Casserly as GM in order to waste that No.5 pick will seal my decision to spend that money on DIY projects around the house.

I wasn't the only guy in the stands to notice the sense of urgency about the players. Reeve's scrutiny of their play has them all playing for their jobs. They're stepping it up just in time to screw up the one last redeeming quality this season promised.

Your point is well taken.

But can you admit that you do get kinda enthused when Mathis is waiting to return a ball? The MB made the call on him--lots of Mathis love when he got picked and folks here learned more about him.

This season has mostly been the game within the game to me but yeah it is rough, but not without hope.

Wow, I never thought about that but it makes sense. That is sad indeed.

This win just left more question marks like where has this team been? how good are they really? what could have been if they started the season playing like they are finishing it? does it take an outside audit to inspire better performance from the coaching? the players? who will be gone & who will stay? will the Texans have the top pick? will they pick Bush or trade down? nothing but question marks, but it did feel good to win again :)

I can't honestly say that I've been enthused about Mathis. Yes he's done a great job and we're much better off on kickoff returns with him back there than we were with Moses. The rest of our team has sucked so much that I can't get excited over just this one part of the special teams. It's great that he gets 6 sometimes on a kickoff. When that's the only taste of the endzone we get all day I can't get that excited.

Two more games and it's over with. Then hope (slowly) comes back and I start the offseason (and stupid college basketball takes over, ugh. March Madness is like hell on earth for me).

I would have like to seen the game, but I live near Austin and all I saw was Cowboys. I did see ESPN highlights later, but its not quite as exciting.

Really? I saw mostly the same team out there. Yes we scored 30 points and we ran for 119 yards. We got some rushing out of Wells and Morency but aside from the solid running I saw the same sad passing attack that is dictated by Carr needing to get rid of the ball in about .72 seconds. Nothing can develop and nobody can get downfield and open consistently. The line cannot protect Carr long enough and on the rare plays where they do he either can't hit anyone with it or he can't find anyone open. I think the points today had more to do with Arizona sucking than the Texans coming out of their funk.

I agree though. At this point a win was refreshing.

yeah college bball doesnt do it for me.

but i like the transition. I do Baseball late spring to summer, go for football until february, and then wonder aimlessly for 2 months.

Doubtful you'd like my seats, but they've been mine for three years now. I upgraded myself after the first season.

This team is broken in many ways. Don't let it get into your minds that a win over a hapless Cardinals team means anything, because it doesn't. What DOES mean something is that we're a week from Christmas, and we just got our second victory. This team has a long, long, long, LONG ways to respectability. Early season play was unacceptable for a division I-AA college team. Certainly it was anything but professional.

Yeah, I was hoping they'd lose out. I was hoping only half this team would have Texan's jerseys next year. As a proud Houstonian, I want the Texans to be the pride of the league. With the current cast, that's not going to happen. Change is coming, and I wanted the No.1 pick as part of that, and I'll beg nobody's forgiveness for throwing in the towel on this disaster of a season.

I think you might be imagining things.

No way to really prove an effort thing, though.

I think overall statistically our team's play has been more consistent late in the season versus early in the season (including our last 3 weird losses):

see e.g.

Our weighted DVOA keeps improving as the season progresses

The Texans played the hardest schedule in the league early in the season. "The Stepping it up" thing may just be more a reflection that we are not playing as difficult of teams right now.

It hurts my head trying to wrap my mind around fans that are mad that the Texans are trying to improve the team, because it might destroy the theoretical possibility that we could get a much better player with the 1st pick versus the 3rd or 5th or whatever.

We will never really know if Reeves presence improves things or not. Too many variables.

For example, it would be non-surprising if the Jags lost here next week given how tough we played them traditionally, and earlier in the season at their home with a bunch of nicked up players. There is no way to know whether Reeves being here or not means anything for what is happening on the field right now.

Of course, that doesn't stop people from speculating or imagining it. People see what they see. But who knows, maybe you can persuade otherwise.

I saw a team today that realized its strengths instead of trying to be something its not. the Texans are most effective when they focus on the running game even without Domanick Davis which proves the offensive line can run block in this scheme. your right about the passing game, I did remember seeing a nice little dump off to the Morency in the middle of the field but as far as using the WR's it seems no one catches over the middle unless its Rivers in a crossing route, man that guy is a beast I was surprised just how large this man is in person.

But there's the rub. You can fire GMs, coaches, towel boys, etc, but you can't fire half the team. It's a salary cap thing. So given that most of these guys are coming back, you can only hope that they learn to win and learn to play better together.

How about this scenario. We lose out for the whole season and get the #1 pick. Despite numerous needs, we take Bush because we either evaluate him as worth it or partially because of the McClain et al hype, the front office staff would be tarred and feathered if they passed on him. We sign him and then through a curse of the football gods or whatever, he busts his knee ligaments.

Not saying that this is gonna happen, nor that people shouldn't be excited about the draft when it is that time of year, but that is a whole lot of hopes to be riding on wishing your team to lose.

I prefer the hypothetical where we we end up winning the rest of the games of the year, get on a roll, pick up a really core stud player whereever we end up in the draft and not have to pay #1 money for him, get some fresh face coaching, some choice FAs and have the team keep winning. It could happen. Let's roll with it.

You make some good points, but let me explain.

As this season progressed (if I can use that word), I started watching the sidelines more than the field. I wanted to see what our players did, and how that differed from other teams. Manning on the sidelines vs Carr on the sidelines, etc. Very big difference in what they do, how they act, etc. It's really interesting to watch, particularly when on-field activity is not.

When the Walker-Carr issue happened, I found it not surprising in the least. Walker is a Pro Bowl player. Carr is not. Seriously, two weeks before that happened, I had the very same impression of Carr that Walker had a problem with. Solely because I had studied his sideline habits and actions.

Yes, their schedule got easier. That "easier" schedule has gotten us to 2-12. Forgive me if I don't "Yippee" too loudly.

This is not a deep draft. You have one playmaker everyone can agree on. If we get the No.2 pick, the institutional record has me believing we'll be using it unwisely. Could we trade down and build with more picks? Well, if we had a personnel department we could put faith in, yes. The problem is, we don't.

You cannot improve on this season by doing anything other than ending it tomorrow. Going 2-14 or 4-12 is equally shameful for a professional team. The only thing we have to look forward to now is the off-season. It can't get here quickly enough.

I was actually surprised at the attendance. I thought it would be emptier than it was. Our section was about 65-70% full, not the half full or less that I expected.

I am of the opinion that we have a lot more talent than most "experts" think. With a good coaching sceme and a few additions to our obvious problem areas, I do believe we will be successful. Look at the way we looked in several games. We looked like world beaters only to revert back to the same inconsistant play centering around the conservative game.

I shelled out money for the NFL Ticket JUST FOR THE TEXANS GAMES. I would have never even bought Direct TV if it weren't for the Texans. So don't belittle my investment into this team. I've purchased my share of Jerseys (Sharpers is now a cleaning rag) and accessories. So don't go assuming that because you live in Houston and actually sit in a seat makes you better fan. I paid for my satellite package but you will find me racing home from church just to watch this crap. I still root for them and I am just as loyal as I was watching the 1st preseason game.

My thoughts precisely. It would seem some fans believe since they sit in the stands that it makes them Martars of the Team. Yes some might have more invested, money wise, but it's their decision to invest just like it's our decision
to invest in Direct TV. Remember some of us fans are out in enemy territory
and we still have the nerts to wear the hats and the tee's and suffer ridicule.

I will agree with you on this as I am in the worst shape. Season ticket holder, DirectTV (fantasy life) and I travel 2.5 hours to the games. Anyone who takes the time and shows the passion for Texans football through thier wallets, viewing the game or posting on this board is a fan. We just may show it in a different ways, but nontheless fanatical.

Ok you win that one. You need to be awarded fanatical fan of the year. They better be calling you and apologizing for the product on the field.

I went to my first game of the season yesterday and it was quite an experience. Have never seen the parking lot so empty, but the stadium had a lot more people in it than I was expecting.

The most amazing thing was how quiet the place throughout the entire game, even after touchdowns. It seemed loud before kickoff but I looked around and everyone was sitting on their hands. Finally figured out that they were piping crowd noise in with the music.

Did the guy with the "Bye Bye Bush" sign make it on TV?

The highlight of this season has to be the cheerleading squad. Those girls have some serious talent.

people on Houston Sports Beat on FSN said "we are disgusted that Texans fans are cheering Kyle Boller on game winning drive and booing when Texans mount a drive". I heard an ESPN radio HACK say Houston held onto win 30-19 I emailed him and said 30-19 is not a 27-24 or 27-21, We handily defeated Arizona and will win out rest of way. Then those "fair-weather Reggie Bush fans" can go away and let "REAL" Texans fans cheer on the team. :redtowel:

This is where I'm at, too. I think we have some great individual players on the team, but they don't play like a cohesive unit. That's the result of coaching. Get a new staff and some fresh faces, and we never know what could happen.

With regards to tanking the season: IMO, asking players to quit, and lose, and then wanting to be a winning franchise next year is fantasy. You think the players taking the field next year just get their memories zapped clean? You'd be asking them to magically go from purposefully being losers and quitters to believe in a winning attitude. For those of you that don't understand how this is not prudent, then you don't understand the mentality of professional football players.

dude are you serious? Fair weather Texan fans??? we are 2-12 and you are calling fans of our team FAIR WEATHER?!?

anyone that comes here and posts has just as much credibility as you or me. If they want Bush and have a reason, any reason, then they are no less a fan than anyone else.

Lots of people think getting him would do a lot more for the team than any trade we could make, and since it hasnt happened yet, we cant be wrong.

so get a grip and realize we're all fans that just want this team to be better.

Best case scenario:

The players are much better overall than it looks. It's the coaches. Carr is not allowed to do play-calling again until the beginning of next year, under a new coaching staff. We lose the last 2 by a field goal or less each because of coaches and bad playcalling (keep it close; play not to lose; don't utilize your players strengths) and we get the first pick in the draft. Take Reggie? Trade down? Whatever....the NEW GM makes the right choice (whatever that is) and we (with a new coaching staff and new super-star-player/players) go on to look like a completely different team next year. Mathis becomes a legit #2, linebackers turn out much improved, etc., etc.

I suspect that the new coaching staffs are going to look like braniacs, because we HAVE talent. 7-9 last year indicates that. Get 3-5 starters in the draft (1-2-Oliners & a TE) and a FA or 2 (CB?) and we could wind up being where most folks thought we would be this year at about a 9-7 team. The HC would probably win coach of the year.

I know there were alot of empty seats, but did you hear how quiet it was. The Cards were in the bull pen end alot of the game and it was so quiet.
In the past when a team was on the north end, you couldn't hear yourself think, it was so loud. We use to be proud of making opposing teams jump the snap count, at least 3 per game. Boy howdy how times has changed. When we start winning again then the noise will return.

Hold up a second there edo. When was the last time you saw anybody add 3-5 starters in a draft and all of them earn their starting job in their rookie year? Then when did that team actually get "better" in the short term?

Maybe on the 3 side but no way do we find 5 starters in this draft. Not unless we lose the next two games and Mike Ditka is working somewhere and really, really wants Reggie Bush.

Likely we get 1-2 starters from this draft. It's going to take a long, long time to rebuild the way many people in here seem to feel we should. Everyone better hope that it's mostly coaching and not the kind of talent gap that some suspect or we're going to be putting this thing together for 3-4 years before we see consistent progress.

I apologize. I didn't realize you lived in freakin' El Paso. For some reason I thought you were in Sugarland. Dunno why.

FWIW, I have a Lewis jersey from season 1. How bad is that? Could be worse - could be Boselli. At least Lewis played.

Let's see some of the non starters get some reps, and see what we've got for next year. Lord knows, the meat thermometer popped on this turkey of a season long ago.

Truthfully, I see us winning out. I really do. SF, GB, AZ, Detroit and the Jets will be drafting before us. That's my call anyway.

Oh BTW, my section was reasonably loud. After losing 12 games this season, and being witness to some truly horrible football, it's a lot to ask of the fans to get worked up at this stage.

My section was also reasonably well represented. We arrived late because I had to some work to do Sunday morning, and if you've ever dealt with US Customs you understand you can't rush those people. Anyway, we had to kick people out of our seats. We had to leave early due to more work problems, but I suppose to any casual observer we were just leaving "to beat traffic".

Well you say we aren't very good so...maybe 3 starters from the draft isn't such a stretch. If we pick DBrick/Winston, he starts. A TE with skills starts (Lord knows we need one) and one guy on the defensive side (LB,CB or Dline). Sounds possible. Add a FA or two and we could dramaticaly change the team.

That said, I have to think your view of the team is incredibly short sighted. If you said, I want Bush because he will entertain me, well, I would understand that. Highlight reel players are entertaining, but I submit, as I have countless times before, that one player does not a franchise make.

Winning involves attitude, and in football, a good system to play in, possibly as much as it involves skill. How many of the last ten years worth of Super Bowl winners had a Reggie Bush on their roster? Winning out gives us a foundation to build upon...

You see, I see victories at this point to be short-sighted in that they hurt our draft position, and add nothing to this season.

I want Bush because he will make the line appear better, because he doesn't need as much of a seam to exploit. He has an athleticism we currently lack.

One player does not a franchise make - Agreed! All this Bush talk is moot anyway. We won't be getting him. If Casserly is still driving the boat, he'll be sure to find whatever rocks exist in the draft to run aground on.

We've been building a foundation for four years. Our little house of cards fell apart. We need a new architect (GM), a new contractor (coach), and they'll have to decide what building materials we'll need. Unfortunately that building block that is called Bush will not be available to our builders. That doesn't mean they still can't produce a winner, but it would be oh-so-nice if they had that type of material to work with.
