Eagles needed CB help but chose to jump up for Dillard.
Pretty hard to cover every contingency.
Who knows, they may have tried to trade up but price was too high.
Funny thing is, had Texans traded up people would still be jumping up and down saying he better be a perrenial pro bowl LT.

Your right in a way because Dillard did not wind up becoming a Texan, but that still doesn’t make it right or they couldn’t trade up if they really wanted to. By same token they could have traded down and still got Howard. They got a guy who is versatile over a specialist, when the specialist they needed was a franchise LT.
It will sting, make no mistake about it and Gaine is gone and now no GM to be accountable.
I don't know. But I hope like hell he becomes a franchise LT. Be nice for steelbtexan to be right for a change.

He was the 4th overall pick in the 2012 draft and has started every game he has not been on IR.
However, and it's a big however, he had knee problems in both the 2013 and 2014 seasons, although he played through the injury both seasons. Then in January 2015 he had work done on both knees; and he still started all 16 games that season.
He suffered the hip injury 2 games into the 2016 season and has said he was still suffering ill effects from that injury during the 2017 season, when he started all 16 games.
He followed this with arthroscopic knee surgery in August of 2018, missing the entire season after it was expected he would return to play by mid-season.
So he's now had a full 11 months to recover. But what we have is a player who has been injured or playing through the effects of his injuries for every season except his outstanding rookie season. Is 11 months enough for a recovery to give us anything?
He's also been terrible since his rookie season, but OBrien seems to have already decided to start him

Thing is we actually don’t need much from him. His contract is done in a way where he only gets the full amount if he lasts all season. The fewer games the less money and every game he does play, assuming he’s not absolutely terrible, is to our gain because that’s one more game under Howard’s belt as the future LT or, if he can’t cut it, gets us closer to a draft that by all accounts is deep for our needs.
People are acting like we need Kalil to be back to all pro form and he is our future. He is a band aid that is meant to be here just long enough to slow the bleeding till we can get stitches.
If that's the case then who else is getting reps at LT?
Did you actually read what I said? What’s premature? I said it’s to early to judge Scharpings performance and was only upset about our drafted OTs moving inside. Didn’t say anything negative about Howard.

It makes sense to plug him in at LT at this time. The beginning of training camp.

They don't know what the heck they have in Kalil. Won't cost them anything to cut him now. Trent Williams is likely to be a Pro Bowler. Won't cost much more than we're paying Kalil.

If it helps TK they still can’t go after Williams. He’s under contract so they can’t talk to him and the skins are doing their Baghdad Bob impression and insisting that everything is fine.
If Williams actually goes to another team then I’ll be holding the oxygen mask for you when I’m not using it myself.

I think they have a reasonable idea. Despite playing with injuries every season except his rookie season, Kalil has been a slightly above average OT.
He ranked #12 as a rookie. In 2013 he began playing on bad knees and fell to #22. His knee problems continued in 2014 and he had his worst year, falling to #33. Following surgery on both knees he rebounded in 2015 to #25. Following his 2016 hip injury, in 2017 he ranked #32.
I think we can reasonably expect Kalil to rank somewhere between #20 and #30 this coming season, which will be a significant improvement.
How is that above average? Where was Davenport last year?

That’s what concerns me about the two young guys not getting enough reps at OT. Kalil and Henderson are both injury prone.

There are 32 teams each with two starting tackles. Kalil's worst season, he ranked #33, but after off season work on his knees in 2015, he came back to be ranked #25 that season.

Actually, that would be a pretty good bet. Only once has he had an in season injury. He's started every game when not on IR. He's now a year out from his arthroscopic surgery and reports are he is "healthy".
In 2015, after knee surgery in the off season, he came back to be ranked the #25th best tackle. He's had a year to recover this time. Without CnnnD's assessment, I'd say prognosis is positive for a solid year where he'll rank in the low to mid twenties.

I see some posters trying to make the apparent strategy clear, others not caring to pay attention because they never liked the pick. We could do the DB thing and rotate reps at LT, OR, burn what is left in a vet like Kalil with Howard next to him getting full games under his belt, albeit inside, but on the left side learning from a vet. When Kalil gets hurt again or they think Howard is ready, bump him outside to where they eventually see him, LT. This is probably smarter then starting a small school OT in New Orleans week 1 and getting DW4 killed. Let's see some live action and see how bad of idea this is, but I can get behind it. Dillard, the most ready OT in the draft is sitting for a year unless someone gets hurt it appears, so these guys are being brought along and will take a few years to see who was right. I still want to see Fulton compete against Martin or someone there, he should not just get the position

Went back to March in the Injury Thread (#126) and found CnnnD's assessment of Kalil. Bottom line, both his knees are likely severely arthritic and with the cumulative cartilage removal over the years, probably has a bone on bone condition.
Pain tolerance will likely be a factor in his effectiveness.

That year, Kalil was returning from his hip injury in 2016 and suffered a groin tear from weeks 5-10, which he played through. The groin injury was reported as compensatory to the previous years hip injury.
Hopes are that 2019 will be more like 2015 when he was rated at #25, following his previous off season knee work.
I've posted before that this should be Davenport's breakout season. Realistically, the contest for the starting LT position should be between Davenport and Howard. If Davenport is to be anything more than a backup, he has to show it this year.

Just a what-if........the Texans successfully traded for Williams without giving up Clowney. Let's say they moved 2020 picks and Davenport.
The Texans OL could look like this:

Scharping- RG, RT, C
Martin- C, SG
Could be an interesting look if Kalil made the transition to RT and still looked like a solid veteran.

The Redskins are having trade discussions regarding tackle Trent Williams, according to a source. Unclear what type of compensation they'd require in a trade. There's a feeling around the league the Patriots would be involved due to depth issues at the position.

Clowney and Davenport could trump anything the Patriots could throw out there unless they're giving up RD1 picks which is highly unlikely with Beli wearing the Patriots GM cap. It'd be nice to see the Texans really beat the Patriots at something.

that would be too convenient. its more like chemistry wasn't working within draft room to filter out noise and come to genuine agreement and understanding that actually looks more professional. still think there is something else to Gaine firing, and not talking about Casserio, that was a particular faction thinking post firing (Easterby). there might be some deflection though, as it relates to pointing fingers but all hands were in this messed up draft room.

The #Texans have $40M in cap space this year and $82M the next. They have a proverbial turnstile for an OL. They also have a great, young QB in Deshaun Watson.

If we were to get Williams from Washington, how many more years could he be expected to produce at a high level? He's now 30. Also, he only has two years on his contract. What will it cost to resign him? I believe Watson's contract will be up about that same time. So, will Williams be a two year rental?
