State of the O-line

The Oline looks good blocking the run. So maybe Devlin has that part down. The pass pro and the passing game need updating. Like @Texansphan says, get clever with the passing game. Butt Chin keeps wanting to go with 7 step drops and these guys can't block that long. Something's gotta give.
Agree with you. The run blocking does indeed seem to be decent........and the pass pro and passing game likewise needs updating. However, drop back steps are not dictated by coaches. They are dictated/adjusted by the QB's reads on what the D is showing before the snap.

Barnwell in espn:

Watson has been pressured on an unreal 48.8 percent of dropbacks so far this season, which blows away even the Russell Wilsons of the world. Nobody else in the league is above 40.4 percent, and the league average for pressure rate is 27.8 percent. Watson is averaging 8.3 yards per dropback when unpressured and 4.7 yards per play when the opposing team gets on him.

https://es.pn/2QKdjEc
What happens to pressure when Watson doesn't read last second blitz calls or stunts? There were too many in the Titans game.

I wonder how much that 17 second brainfart dropback to lose the game inflated the "3.5 seconds to throw" argument that's floating around?

And for most teams, the play audibled to was also called by the coach as the second option of the 2 plays called in the huddle. Would be very surprised if this wasn't the case for the Texans.

Proven players. Man your boy is not doing great in New York. Their offensive line is worse than ours. Please explain that good sir.

I dont have a boy

The NYG's OL is bad, particularly the right side.

Solder has been solid, I know he would be better than what is currently playing LT for the Texans right now and certainly better than Davenport who frankly, sucks.

Bottom line: Until the Texans make a concerted effort in both FA/draft to fix the OL you can expect .500 or less teams.

Again they made a concert effort to get Solders. Who is not having a solid start so far. Its about coaching. Obrien needs to pick one scheme and stick with it.

Trust me I understand all of that. And thank you for driving my point home. Bring Solders here, in which we tried, doesn't mean our offensive line would be any better right now.

To me Optimistic, it is all on coaching. Kubiak had a top 5 offensive line here. We still had several of those players but Obrien putting his own stamp, cleared house. He employs a scheme in which the lineman has to adapt to his high octane offense that changes every game, on the freaking fly.

I'm really having a hard time understanding why some doesn't see that.

I understand that some teams value their OL more than others and I like a gameplan that changes on the fly, rather than the WC offense and it's scripted plays.

But that's just me. # These bunch of backup OL have been everything I thought they would be and more. Hopefully the OT's improve. I dont care for Devlin but lets use the Henderson play for example,

Anytime a LT gets bullrushed back into the QB, who narrowly escapes injury and the LT falls into the RT (Who was doing his job) where the RT is blocking, no amount of coaching in the world can fix that. Unless you keep a TE in to help your LT out on every play.

well then say that instead of the false narrative that McNair doesn't let the team spend money in free agency.

Who owns the team and who's $$$$ is it.

If McNair is hands on (Which he is) then he could say spend whatever it takes to keep my franchise QB healthy. (Within the cap space)

Yup, every current team I believe calls 3 plays or a play tree designation. Gruden may be an exception because he used to call each receiver route each time. Made for obscenely long calls his QBs had a hard time remembering and getting out each time.

Changed/audible plays which Watson has shown the ability to do, also can change the drop back.

Sure.

It's only two games. Nobody can evaluate a brand new line who has to change on the fly every single game. Again last season the Patriots OL started the season very rough ( bottom of the league) and then turned that thing around. You have to give this line at least a year to get. But hey you want to pop your collar, go head on.

If it takes yr yr, then you better expect more of what we've been seeing.

I actually think the Texans might go on a 4 game winning streak. But that wont mean these problems we keep rehashing wont still exist.

This just shows Bill and staff doesn't know wth they are doing. Point in case, the QB circus show before Watson. Benching his starters like they're in high school and/or college.

Another thing is wondering why TEs aren't involved.

Well our TEs are Ryan Griffin and two rookies. Neither rookie blocked in college (hopefully they eventually learn) and one is a project who didn't even play much in college.

Who thought that was a good idea?

Pressures allowed by the #Texans offensive line against the Titans:

(RT) Davenport - 4
(RG) Fulton - 5
(C) Martin - 0
(LG) Kelemete - 3
(LT) Rankin - 6

9:14 AM - Sep 18,

Quarterback Deshaun Watson has been sacked seven times through Week 2, tied for the sixth-most in the NFL. His four sacks in the 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans were tied for the second-most in his career. Part of the problem has been the inexperience of Rankin, but the rookie knows the difficulty of the task and believes he can rise to it.

Against Giants this offensive line will have its' second game together if each remains at same position as last Sunday.

Moving guys after one half. This year it's Davenport

After Davenport almost got Watson hurt/did get henderson's ankle broken you really cant blame BOB for moving Davenport off of LT. Before that happened Davenport was routinely beaten like a stepchild.

There's plenty to blame BOB for, but this isn't one of those things.

The issue is O'brien saw him all training camp and thought he should start at LT. And if Henderseon didnt get hurt, he'd still be there. Bad evaluation.

Again how can you say that? Davenport played LEFT TACKLE this year up to Henderson's injury. His evals would have been at left not right where he is now. I don't get why you guys cannot see that. He could be playing better than Rankin if left at left tackle. We don't know.

We know he almost got Watson hurt and did get Henderson hurt. Maybe after seeing him get dominated Devlin decide to atleast give Watson a chance to see the pressure coming.

Or it could be because Rankin didn't get to practice in TC and played LT in college Devlin decided to put Rankin where he is most comfortable.

Or maybe as CnD said, playing LT put less stress on Rankin's foot that he had surgery on.

How did he get Henderson hurt?

On the play Henderson was hurt Davenports guy fell across the back of his leg. Probably some culpability on both tackles as Henderson let himself get pushed back a loooonnngg way. But Davenport got beat like a drum on the play.

In the pick you can see Davenports guy hitting Watson and laying across Henderson's now broken ankle.

Seantrel Henderson is another Charles Spencer.
What could have been if not for injuries...
A broken bone in the ankle and a broken leg.

He didn't look THAT bad in preseason as he did against the Pats. Perhaps opening day nerves affected him as much as it did Watson

Davenport biggest problem as PatDStat has posted now multiple times is he doesn't keep his pad level low enough. He was getting killed by Flower's bull rush so much, that when he flipped sides the Pats moved Flowers to follow him. He isn't strong enough to play with poor leverage, Devlin needs to be working with him on his pad level non stop

No where close. Spencer truly EXPLODED his tibial plateau which totally DESTROYED his knee joint and any chance for a football career.
I was merely comparing the unfortunate situation of them going down early in the season with the Texans. Didn't Charles Spencer make a comeback though? I could have sworn he still went on to play for another team or two.

Jacksonville picked him up 2 years post injury.........he never played a down for them before being released.

FYI...........an EXAMPLE (not Spencer's actual x-ray) of the class/type of tibial plateau injury he suffered (and out of the NFL permanently).

I dunno what his future holds, in other words is there hope for him, do you think he has the potential to be a competent NFL tackle if he works diligently to improve ?

can he be with enough work? sure, will he be? no one knows, he has the size and athleticism for the position, but so far his technique is bad, and there is an NFL graveyard full of players that had the right size and athleticism to play in the league that never put it all together

The great offensive line evaluation specialist Steelbtexan knows. He just said he's only a swing OT and that's it.

Rankin is also left handed. Not that it makes a huge difference, but it cant hurt.

Are we sure Devlin knows this term, Pad Level?

Having spoken to coaches about this problem, I can tell you that most will tell you that by the time an OT gets to the NFL, it becomes almost impossible to change his play from high to low.

Just so that everyone understands, besides what I posted above re. pad levels.............players with poor strength of their upper extremities, core, and/or lower extremities cannot maintain a low pad level against his opponent...................Davenport.

Pathetic

And, no Henderson was doing his job when he got hurt.
