State of the O-line

True,

I think BOB was scared to cut Watsonloose in his 1st game back coming off of the ACL is what it looked like to me. Atleast that's what I hope was going on. Because otherwise that gameplan was terrible. IMHO

But I'm certainly not well versed in gameplanning.

I don't think O'Brien is stupid .... I do think he stubborn. I think he refuses to consider using his personnel in a system that best fits their strengths.

Still makes no sense why he didn't get snaps during the preseason over there if Henderson injury meant Davenport would move over there

Yeah this Jags Patriots game is depressing me even more......... we not going anywhere this season...... the jags gonna embarrass us

Just for the record.. Steelbtexan wanted to make Nate Solder the highest paid OT in NFL history as well as out bid the Giants when they already did that and he's straight up getting his overrated/overpaid ass handed to him. The Giants have already given up 5 sacks to start the 2nd half.

People take note of that. So while it's easy to criticize those in charge, it doesn't mean you know what you're talking about or can do any better.

Thank God we didn't take Steelbtexan's advice and break into Scrooge McDuck's vault to sign this guy.

In all fairness to the OL , I saw a play where Watson had like 17 seconds to throw it . :clown:

How many of those sacks were on Solder?

None that I saw before I started watching a movie.

I'm just staying consistent here, the offensive talent development has been subpar since Bill has been in charge. The line has regressed every year, the tight ends have been average at best, no need to bring up the backs. It seems to me, Devlin / Obrien has focused on versatility, but guys aren't excelling at any position. Under Kubiak, they didn't spend alot of capital, but got production. Myers and Brown improved in their 1st 3yrs. I dont see it under this staff. It's the same song and guys haven't improved. Think about it, Brown was the last tackle taken, former defensive end, Myers was a 6th rd pick and was traded for a 5th, and Winston was a 3rd rd pick. Brown and Myers made pro bowls and winston played at pro bowl levels. The other 2 formed a good, cohesive unit. Look at what we have now.

FA backups, how's that working out for them?

Im watching this Jax/NE game..we're going to get killed. We have nothing for Ngoukwe or Fowler coming off the edge..

At least we got all of our picks next year. Who can we get for the tackle position?
Alabama's LT Jr Jonah Williams is quickly coming into our range as we climb the draft rankings. He also has started right tackle. Seattle's second round pick could get us Alabama's RB Damien Harris who seems perfect back for us. Our own pick which could by season end be even higher than Seattle could bring us DE Zach Allen who is starting off this season where he left off 2017 for Boston. Round three OL Max Scharping who should be able to also play OG and round 4 best corner available although all CBs other than Greed Williams LSU are not playing up to 2017 stats.

That requires two things that escape the Texans.....thinking and planning.

Well, from the glass half full perspective:

If this continues, Gaine like his predecessor's will have a very enviable draft position and an additional pick in RD2 to work with as he attempts to begin the mini-makeover phase of his term as Texans GM.

OL will hopefully be treated as the top priority it's proven to be for the past 15+ seasons....hopefully, his strategy says OL first.

Can he make finding a new HC a top priority? How are you going to let a team minus their QB, top receiving threat, and 2 OTs out game plan you?

Kelemete played terrible on Sunday as did Davenport. Rankin was beaten on many plays but was scrapping. Martin and Fulton were the best linemen and each of them had a blown assignment. TE blocking in not very good.

Overall they are MUCH better at run blocking, but gave up some disturbing plays in which basic twist stunts confused the inside guys and edge rushers going unblocked. Some of that is Watson even though he does seem to be reading correctly and trying to communicate assignments with the center. Holding it too long.

If Kelemete does not improve by next game I'm putting in Mancz.

there were so many freaking blown assignments on our line, it makes you wonder why your coach barely gave any time for our line in the preseason knowing it was 5 guys who essentially have never played together

He's letting people beat him inside.. just like now.

6 sacks so far!

Imagine what happens when you aren't blocking for the goat. Highest paid LT in NFL History.. LMAO. You still want to sign that contract now?

I'm surprised Steel isn't paying close attention to both Solders and Norwell

I chose to watch a movie last night instead, but I didn't see Solder give up a single sack in the 1st half.

I was watching Jimmy G instead of the Jags/Pats. But with the day that Bortles had you can bet Norwell held his own.

Ilooked for Solders stats and couldn't find what I was looking for but it appears Solder only gave up one sack. If anybody can find more info it would be greatly appreciated.

I definitely see a nice future in Rankin. He's a high effort rookie who was able to garner too little field experience prior to the live bullets.

He actually blocks well it seems when he knows his assignments. The whole line was blowing assignments frequently it seemed, kudos to the Titans for timing their blitzes well, bad move on the Texans not letting what was basically a brand new line not play together and gel during the preseason

The same reason why O'Brien, in his first year in Houston, decided to constantly shuffle the new O-linemen throughout preseason instead of allowing them to concentrate on their primary positions. O'Brien doesn't understand how human beings learn. He operates by an idealism that tells him that his players are ready after minimal repetition, as we saw this preseason. But pro athletes require excessive repetition if they're going to be competitive at the highest level. They require fine tuning. That's why this team starts out flat footed and fumbly every season under O'Brien. If he were a batting coach, his sessions would be over after one or two hits.

He also can't evaluate talent at all.

Multiple times we go through a whole training camp and he decides on a starter only to change his mind in halftime of the first game. This year it's Davenport.

I don't think he knows which players are good.

To be fair, Davenport had some if minimal RT experience last season and both he and Rankin are not right tackles. I think Rankins skills would allow him better results at RT than Big D but I can see the decision.

Fair enough but Davenport has looked terrible at RT too. He's not starter quality at this point of his career.
Nor was he supposed to be. He got almost no snaps last season other than as a super tackle then moved to LT last three games when there was no other alternative. Remember Jeff Allen played there also. The complete offense was horrible and there was little offered in free agency to resolve LT. Davenport never played right tackle in college unlike most LTs in NFL. He started LT every game four years. There are several first and second round left tackles who don't come into their own until 2-3 years and that is often playing behind a vet starter. There were several posters here who said Davenport looked reasonably okay the few snaps in game one first half before being moved to other side. All seem willing to give pick #12 Watson some slack to adapt so how about same for the two guys at tackle? Rankin a third and D a fourth.

I agree with what you're saying. I'm not ready to give up on Davenport, he needs time. I just think OBrien believed he was ready when he wasn't. He consistently makes those kind of evaluation mistakes
