State of the O-line

RB and TE next major concerns for me.

Got nothing at RB and non-blocking projects at TE.
well we have an average RB in Miller and if Foreman is healthy enough to play we could have decent tandem. We all think Watson improves the guys around him so..it ain't nothing. If Watson responds like we all hope and no reason..so far, he won't perhaps we won't need in line blocking from tight ends rather more quality targets down field?

Here we go with the preseason koolaid on the OL:

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sp...Clain-Takeaways-from-Texans-OTAs-12960294.php

7. Offensive tackles Julién Davenport (left) and Seantrel Henderson (right) have impressed the coaches during the OTAs. Davenport (6-7, 320) and Henderson (6-7, 330) look the part. Davenport played well on the left side at the end of last season. He must nail down the position and give the Texans the kind of performance they need at the most important position on the line. This is a pivotal season for Henderson. He signed a one-year contract and has a chance to make a lot of money if he plays well. He started 26 games in his first two seasons with Buffalo but only one the last two seasons. Rookie Martinas Rankin, a third-round pick, is still learning and has a long way to go before he's ready to challenge for a starting job, but that's what camp is for.

8. With center Nick Martin rehabbing from ankle surgery – an injury he suffered Dec. 17 at Jacksonville – Zach Fulton is showing his versatility. Fulton, 26, played guard and center for Kansas City. One reason the Texans signed him was his ability to switch positions smoothly. Fulton started 48 games at guard and center in his four seasons with the Chiefs. In 2017, he did an exceptional job at center in place of the injured Mitch Morse. Some close to the Chiefs say Fulton was better at center than guard. When Martin is able to return, the starting job is his, and Fulton will move to guard, one of four new starters on the offensive line.

Sorry, I don't see much koolaid there... after your bolded, all I see are facts and disclaimers in what you quoted

It's already Koolaid when you say a skills-position player looks good in shorts vs air, but to compliment OL in non-contact drills? That's that top-shelf Koolaid right there..

Seems like more of desperation to publish anything to me

Incognito was born into a family with 2 psychopathic parents. Incognito showed his psychopathy by the time he entered college.
Tragic to see the life chances of kids born into families with such problems.

Incognito has attained one of the most profitable career paths available in society, yet even with monetary success he's unlikely to find happiness in life.

Sufferers of adverse childhood experience have all sorts of health issues associated that stay with them through life, they have a significantly lower life expectancy and yet very little sympathy from society as a whole who rarely understand their condition.

I've heard psychopaths make very good OL.

I know last yrs OL almost drove me crazy.

Me too .... but I don't think they psychopaths .... much worse, it has been rumored that were suffering from the rare but deadly - microscopic talent disorder .... and it was apparently extremely contagious !

It spread like wildfire all over the OL last yr.

Even to Martin, who has an above avg talent level.

I'm glad you got my joke.

NFL executives grade every team's offseason

Houston Texans Grade: C+

Head coach Bill O’Brien and former GM Rick Smith fell out of alignment, which makes the hiring of Brian Gaine as Smith’s successor a potentially important move for long-term success. The defense could be better off with Romeo Crennel retaking control of playcalling duties. Also on the positive side, an exec said he thought the Texans were probably "doing backflips" after Stanford safety Justin Reid remained available for them in the third round. Adding Tyrann Mathieu on a one-year deal carries the potential for a big payoff.

Unfortunately for the Texans, the quarterback moves they made last offseason — trading up for Deshaun Watson, giving up on Brock Osweiler — left the team without any picks until the third round this year. The Texans have glaring holes along the offensive line, which seems problematic with Watson returning from ACL surgery. However, it’s not as though quality linemen were readily available through the draft or free agency.

"Let’s flip it and look at Cleveland," an exec said. "Cleveland had the exact same needs on the offensive line, with all the resources in the world, and still didn’t get it done. Cleveland could have taken [Mike] McGlinchey, and maybe that would have made more sense than taking Denzel Ward. Houston just didn’t have the resources, and it will be interesting to see if Watson can stay healthy. If he’s getting hit a lot, it makes me nervous."

Hey Cak, it appears that ESPN concurred with my thought on LT, McGlinchey (Cak was none too happy that I drafted Barkley and McGlinchey in our TT Mock). Although they didn't include taking Barkley....I'm still 100% certain Barkley will be a much bigger factor this season than Baker Mayfield. I think Barkley is going to be a stud for the Giants and Manning. Cleveland has a better than expected QB in Tyrod Taylor.....giving him Barkley and McGlinchey could've been exactly what this team needed versus a QB2 and Ward. If a QB is still a need, then the 2019 NFL Draft should supply one since I'm not in the camp that thinks BM is going to be the difference maker the team drafted him to be.

Tweet from @PFF_Mike: I think the Texans have the worst offensive line I've seen a team enter a season with since I started working for @PFF.

Good luck, Deshaun!

Tweet from @evansilva: #Texans projected starting OTs are Julie'n Davenport & Seantrel Henderson. OGs are former #Chiefs & #Saints sixth men Senio Kelemete & Zach Fulton. It's not pretty. https://twitter.com/pff_mike/status/1004732742855286785?s=21

Tweet from @AllbrightNFL: @evansilva I didnt think it was possible for that line to get worse, but somehow they pulled it off.

This is what I've been saying and few on this MB will listen.

I bet they will be singing this tune come the middle of the season.

Of course I said the same thing before last season and got the same responses last yr. Then I was in I told you so mode and members either A. Called me a know it all. (Not True) or blamed everthing on BOB's offense.

Looks like Watson will be running for his life again this yr. Hopefully they finally get a clue and take fixing the damn OL seriously next offseason. Getting a new OL coach would be a good start. IMHO

Texans need to pull of a nice trade for at least one top tier olineman.
We have two 2nds next draft and I would not be upset if Texans burned them to acquire a lock down tackle at either left or right side. While I think our interior is good enough, those two key outside spots are glaring deficiencies.
Trade one of our 3 centers if necessary - we simply must give Watson some decent protection and a chance to show his full potential.

Who could we have gotten though; an average LT in Nate Solder who got overpaid and wasn't going to come here because of his wife? Could have kept Duane Brown but he was unhappy here and the return we got was actually really good for someone of his age. The draft? We don't have 1st or 2nd rounders and no way we were going to mortgage our future picks unless the likes of Quentin Nelson fell super far

Man thank you. Some folks acts like the pickings were grand. That skit was slim pickings so we did what was best with what we had.

Do you ever ask yourself - why is their attraction to defensive studs so much stronger than to offensive players ? Surely they are smart enough to look at the strength ratings at the end of each season. Every draft, I watch team after team, draft the offensive linemen that I've been pounding the drum about all season .... and none of these teams have an O Line that is rated as low as ours ! Is it because O'Brien was a DB .... or because they're over the top with "Defense Wins Championships" ? We spent a lot to get Watson, and he turned out to be the best investment since JJ Watt. We need to decide what offensive scheme is best suited to his skillset. We then need to surround him with the weapons that he needs .... beginning with a very talented offensive line ! Forgive me for my poor imitation of a broken record .... but My Lord this drives me nuts !

Patriots trade for 49ers tackle Trent Brown

USA TODAY SPORTS
The New England Patriots didn't wait for the NFL draft to resume to continue their perpetual quest to improve the roster.

New Patriots T Trent Brown has started 26 games since the start of the 2016 NFL season.
JEFF HAYNES, AP

Friday, the AFC champs sent their third-round pick, 95th overall, to the San Francisco 49ers for massive tackle Trent Brown and the Niners' fifth rounder.

A 6-8, 355-pounder, Brown has been San Francisco's starting right tackle for the past two seasons but became expendable when the Niners selected Notre Dame tackle Mike McGlinchey in the first round Thursday night

Trent Brown

Also, they never really needed to trade Duane Brown

My opinion is that Obrien thinks he is finding strong talent. It's been 4 years of this, so we can only conclude that he's bad at evaluating talent.

Crennel seems to be doing fine with the defense.

On defense, regardless if it's Wade or Romeo, you know the personnel they need to run their defenses. With O'Brien and his game plan offense, they have not been able to find a slot WR, they signed a LG and play him at RG, they signed a slashing, speed back and proceed to run dive plays in the heart of the defense. They seem to like OLs who can play multiple positions, but can't play one position at a high level.

No wonder, Smith and O'Brien were out of alignment.

Are O'Brien and Gaine out of alignment too?

It say a lot about his value huh. They drafted a player to replace him after two years. Something must've went wrong

Compared to what the Texans have?

And yes when the Patriots give up a 3rd rounder, he probably has value. I'm more inclined to believe it was a screwup by SF, maybe for cap reasons.

Do you have any stats on him. Like what was his grade compared to the rest of the LT's.

@MarkDanielsPJ: Pro Football Focus graded Trent Brown as the 21st best tackle in the NFL with an overall grade of 79.3. For comparison, Nate Solder had a 75.7 grade (32nd overall) and Marcus Cannon was graded at 78.1 (76th overall) last season.

Speaking only for me, it is not that I'm not listening.. I just disagree with you. Watson running for his life I am not advocating but he has been very successful (including in college) doing just that. I will critique players and coaches and this off season after we actually have facts to critique.

What makes it even more comical is drafting two TEs who can't block
seems obvious that Akins was not drafted to be an in line blocker but for his catching. He avg 15.1 yds 2016 and 16.1 last season; this could be part of O''Brien's new offense. I would prefer a strong blocking TE that could also cach but..didn't happen. If Oline can give Watson time, he might prefer a target to another blocker.

In line blocking TEs are going the way of the FB in today's league..they have to be a weapon in the passing game first and then only adequate as a blocker. You can coach a guy up in blocking technique...you can't make a blocking TE become a weapon in the passing game.

That's just what we needed............a Right Tackle coming off of labrum shoulder surgery the end of Dec this past season............his RIGHT shoulder. Of course, the Pats are trying him at Left Tackle. He's as big as a mountain........and moves like one. Brady, you better learn to run to your right..............

Cap reasons? He's a former 7th round pick who's still on his rookie contract and the 49ers are 46.5 million dollars under the cap..3rd most cap space in the NFL.

It's the last year of his deal, so he'll get a big contract next year and the 9ers might have other priorities
