State of the O-line

Texans coach Bill O'Brien was asked if Davenport would start again this week and replied: "I would say no."

This is disappointing because it seems obvious this is a golden opportunity to get the rookie some quality snaps with the first unit in a starting role. He's the future, if only in a limited role as a back-up because Clark is a vet who's on the downside of his career. And it's not like Clarks performace was vastly superior to the rookies on Sunday vs the Colts, actually there was probably little difference between the two.
We aren't going to the POs, maybe the biggest thing, maybe the only thing left to salvage in the 2017 season is developing the younger players to the utmost which would also give the organization a better feel of their needs and priorities going into the upcoming 2018 FA & Draft.

Yes it is a little disappointing but I don't think it means he won't play at all. I fully expect Davenport will get some snaps at LT this weekend and should also be in there as the extra blocking TE too. I just wonder what the coaches saw that made them go back to Clark, or was this just a case of them trying to work Clark back in to the line after his calf injury while giving Davenport some extra playing time at LT to see if he could handle it.

I guess if they thought he was any better than Clark, Giocomini, Allen, or XSF they would probably bring him in for a tryout. Saw this on NFL.com: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...aive-ot-greg-robinson-with-injury-designation So, I don't know how much this ankle injury has played into him being released and how bad the injury really is but, it sounds like he wasn't doing all that great with the Lions.

It really doesn't make sense the way they did it. If it were to help Clark work his way into the line up, then I would have thought they'd start with Clark & work Davenport in every other series, or very third series, or something like that.

If it were to get Davenport up to speed you'd think they'd sub Clark in every other series, or every third series.

But to play Davenport the first half, then Clark the second half, & for O'Brien to infer he wasn't happy with Davenport's play, when he clearly played as well as Clark... imo, I don't understand what the were going for.
 
I watching him pretty closely too. I felt like he pretty well on about two thirds of the plays, and very good on about one third. I too was surprised when he didn't start the second half. I guess O'Brien thought Clark would be better .... but he wasn't. O'Brien got panicked when he thought, "oh crap, this is the easiest game we'll have for the rest of the year" !
 
Yeah as really it was anything but easy. And really can't be overconfident like the coach was.

I don't get that either ? I'm confused and frustrated about the way O'Brien handled it, which is probably bout the same way young Mr Davenport feels.

BTW, Can you find me what degree Ricky has received to put him in an upper mgmt position? I've looked repeatedly several different places and cant seem to find the answer to this question. I do know that he failed out one semester in college. A top notch guy running the Texans org? And you wonder why the Texans are in a constant state of mediocrity/clusterf**k.

I don't want to derail this thread , so to answer the question, The OL is really bad and only gonna get worse due to Ricky's lack of planning.

You asked in another thread who was out there in FA to fix the OL? The Vikings OL stunk last yr and they added Reiff/Remmers in FA and drafted Eflien, all of the sudden they have one of the best teams in the NFL. Remind me again what did the Texans org do to fix the OL this offseason?

Not a big RS fan but it looks like he graduated from Purdue. He has some coaching experience and spent 6 years with Denver in the pro personelle dept

That's not the way it was reported & it didn't come from O'Brien. It was reported O'Brien considered naming Watson the starter after the Preseason Panthers game. He consulted Rick who supported the move, but cautioned O'Brien to make sure he is doing it for the right reasons.

Billy thought it over & decided against it.

Injury is not the only problem. At the 2014 Combine, he weighed in at 332 lbs. He was told to get his weight down to ~315. In 2015, after toe surgery, he was again told to get his weight down to ~315. And he struggled to get to 319. Last year he crepped back up to ~330. Today, after his ankle issues, it appears that his weight is closing in on 340.

BOB wouldn't have thought about it if Ricky didn't bring it up. Why do you think Ricky brought it up? What has lead you to believe Ricky supported starting Watson game #1? Because that's not what I've read various places.

One thing I think we can agree on is the Texans org is in a bad place and unless Watson can fully heal and stay healthy it will get much worse before it gets better.

So, Smith pulled a Jedi mind trick on O'Brien?

You always post about this dysfunctional Texans organization. Here is a good example of O'Brien seeking feedback from Smith, getting his feedback and then taking that feedback when making a decision on starting Watson. Collaboration between Smith and O'Brien is supposed to be a positive thing. However. you still managed to turn it into a divisive, disingenuous act by Smith. Too funny.

2. I remember that pic quite well. Doesn't mean Ricky wanted his new play toy to get hurt behind an OL that Ricky neglected.
3. I don't know how to post links and wouldn't waste the time finding them since you think Ricky is doing a bang up job and is the man to lead the Boys down on Kirby to a SB championship. Lets just say we will continue to disagree on this. 12 yrs and counting without a SB contender and I suspect we will be having this discussion IF Ricky is here in 20 yrs. Meanwhile the Rams were able to turn things around this offseason with smart mgmt.

4. What are the right reasons and more importantly what are the wrong reasons?

The pride he showed in that picture & the fact that he was the one suggesting there was a QB competition leads me to believe he wanted Watson to start. But I do believe he trusted Bill to determine when that should be.

& FYI Les Snead has been with the Rams since 2012. That Roster you're in love with looked like a roster building blunder before this season. They changed coaches & voila...

How come when I say what was reported posters say, he said that out of frustration , or this, or that etc.... But when the shoes on the other foot these same posters seem to forget that? BTW, Link?

One thing is for sure the team sucks this yr and Ricky's been here for 12 yrs now and hasn't done squat. About on par for what a sociology major should be doing running a NFL franchise. So the current state of the franchise isn't surprising at all to me and shouldn't be to you. I expect more of the same like the last 12 yrs unless changes are made at the top. As it is now the Texans franchise has and will continue to provide quite a few LOL's on Sunday's for the foreseeable future.

Good find. This was my point. There are numerous reasons and examples you can use to fire Smith or to build the case against him. Based on the degrees of current and past GMs, using Smith”s Sociology degree as a predictor of failure is very inaccurate and most people without an agenda wouldn’t even take that into consideration.

Not an agenda here.

Just that I consider sociolgy degrees to be degrees in BS.

The man running the Texans isn't conducive to winning a SB, but he's very fluent in BS.
