Wand, who is entering his third season, is adjusting to the guard role for the first time.

The coaches have not told either player he will be shifting roles when the season starts. Pitts said he expects to find out before the season opener.

"If it doesn't (improve) there'll be a whole new line in there," Pitts said. "I promise you. The whole warming-up phase is a wrap. It's in the books. It's time to put up or shut up."


I'm not so sure this line is going to be fine. We all expected to know where everyone was going to be around training camp . . . Now Pitts is even saying that he might not know until the season opener. I'd like to know sooner than that. It seems, IMO, that the only thing the coaches are sure about regarding this line, is that things need to change. This doesn't make me feel very comfortable. It also sounds like the coaches have given these guys their warning, perform or you are out of here!
 
Sounds like these guys are sick of hearing the boo-birds. I can't wait to see how fired up they will be. Just a hunch but I expect major improvement. Remember these guys really just started playing together and are extremely young, especially Wand and Pitts.

I will tell you right now that there is nothing wrong with Coaches telling players "they need to put up or shut up." This sounds like it is at the very least making an impression on the line. I feel very comfortable with the way the coaching staff is handling the situation. Like it or not we can not get additional linemen that are of a higher quality. They just are not availible. Casserly understands this and I am very pleased that we are not over paying for talent simular to what we have. The answer is to build the line in the Draft or aquire probowl talent from FA. Well the FA talent is not there and the draft talent would not have been an upgrade so this is what we have. I can tell you that it will be allright we will be improved over last year.

I just have to agree with this thinking.... and it reflects a decent game plan.

We are NOT going to put up Indianapolis numbers in offense and we are going to run the ball first. We spent our money on the defense this year... it is prudent management, reflecting what the FA market and the draft had available. Everything else is "coulda, woulda, shouda" and will not matter one second after the first snap of the regular season cause I will be at the game!!! :)

Is Wand just using McKinney's name as an example? Or is Washington getting a shot at the starting Center gig? Interesting.

As far as the "time to put up or shut up" comment by Pitts...he's right. That goes for a lot of players as well as coaches. The Texans need to feel that urgency because it's there.
 
Do not forget about the OL guy (Drew something or another) we drafted from Arizona or Arizona St. with our 5th pick in this past draft. Supposedly he could make a push at LG if Wand gets all whinney and starts playing poorly. Pitts will the starting gig @ LT and I beleive Washinton should start @ LG. And just to keep the defense on their toes I think there should be a play or two a game where Steve lines up @ LG and Washington goes C. texanpride
 
Did anyone else see the report on FSN Houston when the Texans took BP at Minute Maid Park? Chester Pitts introduced himself as the left tackle. Seems like he has some idea of what's going to happen.

I assume Wand can read more than just writing on the wall. Say...the news paper of something?
 
Yea, its looking like the recent practice sessions where Wand and Pitts were swapping positions were more than just playful experimentations.
Could be a case of, as Mr. Dyland would say, "The Times, They are A-Changin" regarding the OLine.

I agree. I think that they are trying to coach what they have and motivate them accordingly. This is a smart move, and these guys should be playing as if their lives depend on it!!!!
 
Sounds like a football team to me. This is what they do when they are in the off-season. Play well or get replaced. That is how it works from high school to the pros.
 
If they put the best 5 guys on the field for the season, Mckinney just shouldn't be there. Pitts and Wade seem like the only two guys that have a spot for sure. Wiegert probably will keep his job at RG. I think that the other two spots are going to be decided on sometime near the end of pre-season.
 
I have a simple solution to the LT problem, and we can kill two birds w/one stone. Whether Pitts or Wand lines up at LT during practice, have Peek line up at end, that way he gets plenty of reps and they will be ready for any DE they face during the season, or at least conditioned from chasing him around. :)

Maybe not, but it worked in theory! LOL

MUSICAL CHAIRS: Seth Wand spent all of the Texans’ coaching sessions at left guard, swapping positions with Chester Pitts, who played left tackle.

Now that the Texans have started their five-practice mini-camp, Wand and Pitts have moved back to the roles they started in during the past season. Wand had little to say about the move except that he can count on playing somewhere on the left side of the offensive line.

“As of this morning I was put at tackle, I guess, for the next four (practices) now,” Wand said. “It’s kind of like I’ve been saying before, all I know is right now I’m a starting lineman on the left side. Whether or not it’s tackle or guard, I don’t know.”

Head coach Dom Capers downplayed the switch, saying the team hasn’t made any concrete decisions on who will be playing where on the left side of the line. He did admit that having at least two players available to play each position is a nice advantage.

“We’re looking for what we think might be the most efficient combination of those two,” Capers said of Wand and Pitts. “They both play both (spots). We worked Seth in at guard quite a bit here during the coaching sessions. But we felt we wanted to get him back out at tackle and take a look at him back out at tackle and Chester back in at guard.”

I understand folks looking at 2003 and saying switch back to Pitts at LT since he only gave up 5.75 sacks, but look at those guys. Pitts made that work with a lot of anticipation (false starts) and tenacity (holds). Wand had a cleaner 1st year by far penalty wise and looks like a LT--long torso and arms. His footwork is good--if his time on the inside will improve his hand work he should step up just fine without sacrificing all the penalties and Pitts should settle into his role as the run blocking mauler. Personally, I am more worried, not about the quality, but durability of RG and the pressure in the middle from the one who will remain nameless.

this brings another idea to mind...I was looking over the roster and checking out the profiles of some of the rookies and I came across #79 Alfred Malone DE. He is 6' 5" 308 LBS, and as a senior in high school, he played tight end and fullback as well, gaining 550 rushing yards with three TDs. I don't know what kind of speed he has, but in our Jumbo package, he could be our secret weapon at TE or our version of the fridge playing FB.

Hey, it's the offseason, and I'm bored.
 
Everyone likes to speculate who is gonna do what next season. Who is gonna be #1 in BCS, who should win the division, the conference, the Superbowl... Just get out there and do the dang thing. I've seen playoff contention potential and hesitation in this team, since season 2. Go all out!!! Buy Carr some more time to put the ball in the air - this team can be a big threat when that ball is in the air. O-line needs to get out and do the da!n thing.
