Some off record comments from Gaffney about Carr

I met a guy yesterday at a friend of mine's birthday bash who use to live next to Gaffney. Anyway Gaffney moved a while back but they ran into each other in a mall right after the Texan's season and spoke briefly about the season.

Some points he made about Carr were:
- the coaches had a noose around his neck, but when they let him play his game, Carr is unstoppable he feels.
-Carr is an awesome leader and the team rallies around him and really respects him
-Carr is a true gamer, studies loads of film, lives and breathes football, but he feels he was held back or resticted by the Texans' philosophies. He feels Carr has enough game to set the tone of a game ala P. Manning if he is given the freedom.

Some things about himself and the Texans he said:
- He looks forward to next season b/c the team really respects McNair and knows he do whatever it takes to build a championship team
- He didn't really comment on the #1 pick except for something like 'as long as they help us win'

Pretting interesting stuff coming straight from a players mouth, off the record.
Just thought i'd share.
Cheers

Thanks for sharing. Funny how many of the Carr supporters dog Gaffney and many of the Carr bashers like Gaff. I hope they both show us something next year if they are back in a Texans uniform.

before people come in here and dog the credibility of these comments.

Just wanna say I hope that this is all true and that Gaffney really feels that way. Cause I would like to see Carr succeed here, and I want to see Gaffney return next season, and I want to see the coaching staff give our offense alot more freedom.

That is interesting.

I've heard specifically that one of the other receivers thinks we should trade down and build the trenches. Regardless if trade down is the right thing to do, this leads me to believe that he thinks there are bigger problems than Carr.

For the people who do want to 'dog' the credibility of those comments, spare us. We get it, ok?

yeah i expect a few of those. Its not like i sit around and conjure up BS to post on message boards. I rarerly start threads on here unless its of value, i'm more of a spectator that just laughs and shakes my head at all the BS posted on here.

My uncle used to live next door to McKinney's brother's ex-wife and he said she said he said that the whole problem is that AJ and D-Rob suck. :)

No really, I hope you're right and I'm both a Carr and Gaffney supporter, although I wouldn't make him #2, except in a pinch.

Interesting comments, I hope they are all true.
Isn't Gaff an unrestricted FA this year ? If the Texans ultimately decide to go
with Reggie, this probably wouldn't bode well for Gaff's job security since he gets plays in the slot and Reggie may get some snaps from that positon.

mckinney lives 2 streets from me ..but i don't think i have the stones to just walk up and ask him...he has field turf under his playground

Yeah, in a Conroe Texans semi-pro league uniform.

So, does that make you a "PERSONAL ATHLETIC SUPPORTER"? (AKA...a jock strap) :)

I am guilty of dogging Gaffney, I just never thought he was a #2 reciever. I will however give everyone, including Pitts a new clean slate to build upon with the new coaching staff. It's wierd that I am looking forward to this next season, depending how the offseason goes. I could tell from our offseason moves last year that were not going to be very good. We probably won't be good this next year, but at least we will start with a new base.

shrugs...my only complaint with that is that gaffney is a stinkin gator...what does he know?

Ha...that's funny. I hope it's true. I know I've dogged Gaffney before. But I think that's just because of the way the season went.

The thing is.. I think alot of the Gaffney hate is that he isnt a superstar.. he is merely a contributor.. but he is a contributor in a bad offense, so he looks bad by association.

he doesnt have Johnsons incredible measurables.. or Mathis' amazing speed.. he is merely a solid football player..comparable to Reggie Wayne, Randel-El, and other such "good but not great" football players.

We arent going to make a superbowl on Gaffney's shoulders.. but his ability to play ball is undeniable in my mind..and in a good offense I see him playing a key role in our success.

Yeah, what he said. :redtowel:

Yet another talent misused by the Texans jack off coaching staff. He is always gonna be that slot #3 wide out who catches 4-5 balls a game. As said above not a "play maker" but an important, sure handed slot. Alot of over the middle and could burn a LB with a proper mismatch.

I'll second that motion.

I admit I am one of Carr's biggest disbelievers. I don't think DC could lead ants to sugar. However, since all indications are that we are going to exercise the option, I hope the comments about Carr in this thread are realized.

I'll be more then happy to eat crow in a few years if it takes us to a playoff win. But until I see some better result from Carr and the rest of this team, I'm sticking to my current opinion - Carr Stinks!

Good post. I think the Carr bashers would be in line with this thinking. Our comments on Carr have mostly been about our concern on his contract and intangibles and how they fit into future health of the Texans.

Gaffney was one of the best college receivers I've ever seen. He was speedy and some thought a definite NFL talent. Hmmm. Gaffney/Eric Metcalf . . . who's next?

Seriously, I'm starting to go along with the trade down theory. I'm an AJ Hawk supporter at this point. I know the Texans need help at LB. And we'll just go after Adrian Peterson next year to shore up the run game. AJ is a can't miss talent . . . and the Texans can't afford to miss on this one.

Hey spoda, if Mckinney lives two streets down from you then can you drop off some weights on his door step? A little muscle for your o-lineman never hurt anyone, more specific your QB.

im not so sure LB is a weakness for us.. i cant wait to see our current LBs with a new coaching staff.

Could not have said it better. Tough to sink money into a guy that you have no clue if he stinks or if it was an aberration. As long as people stop with the excuses and let him and the team see what transpires this year I'm all for hoping that he turns it around and I'll eat crow myself. At this moment I don't see it happening though.

I, for one, don't see much leadership qualities from Carr. BUT I definately buy Gaffney's comment of the coaching staff holding him back. The old coaching staff was horrid, and I expect we will be a much better team even without any new players just because of a change of philosophy.

Glad to hear the players like Carr & McNair and aren't completely discouraged yet.

Good to hear that Gaffney sounds like he wants to come back, I was hoping he wouldn't leave after the season the team had. I like Gaffney a lot, he's not especially fast but he runs routes pretty well, seems to get himself open, and he catches most anything thrown at him. I'm not sure if he's a true #2 WR, but I think he is a decent one for that and would be a good slot #3 WR in an offense that properly uses one (i.e. Indy with Stokley or St. Louis with Curtis, etc.) Hopefully Mathis can emerge as a better WR and start becoming a true #2 guy with that great speed. I've briefly spoken with some of the players before when I've seen them in around town and I got the same impression from about all of them about David Carr and how the team was run.

I think Gaffney can play a role like TJ Housh from Cinci. They are about the same speed and measurables, but used in two totally different ways. You give Gaff the freedom that Housh has and he will produce. Let's not forget there were some people that thought Gaff was a steal when he fell to the second round, damn shame he ended up with Capers and Co.

Seriously? I don't get that. I haven't seen much from the starting unit. Certainly there's not a Pro Bowler among that group. You need nasty LBs to win and make the playoffs and certainly to win the SB. And most of being a good LB is not something you teach on the field. You just have to be the meanest SOB on the planet with an absolute death wish when you bust through blocks. We need guys like that on this team. A punisher like AJ Hawk would be a huge start for rebuilding the toughness of this defense.

I can take Rocky McIntosh and Schlegal and get the same effect from my LBs as AJ Hawk would have and I do it with more speed and at half the price. Not discounting his talent as a LB, but he is not nearly the freak most people think he is. Hopefully he will go to a 3-4 team and move inside where he will look like star.

I have to give you props, Ses. You were one of the voices that KNEW we would take a step backward last season. I had some concerns (and I posted them before the season), but I didn't anticipate every single concern coming true.

Schlegel is fast and tough (but injured). Hawk would be an absolute terror in a 34. You cannot top this guy in that base. He is a mean *** SOB and perfect for the Texans. We have too many nice guys back there. Trust me when I say that for most of the game against Texas and Vince, Hawk got the better of him. It helped that Schlegel was there to mop up, but Hawk disrupted the middle of our offense. If OSU had shown up with an offense that day, there would not have been much Vince talk. I hate to say that but OSU had the clearly better defense and a good part of that was Hawk.

Another point - the best thing about a great MLB is that they are pretty much plug and play. You can start Hawk from day 1.

I second that statment. I think he can flourish in another system. Note to everyone, its simply amazing how many ex-texans seem to flourish on teams with a different coaching staff. Look at Marlon McCree now (which the pathers said was there number one option in resigning this off season), Jeff Posey...Hey Steve Foley for that matter.

At LB, and this was discussed the other day, I'd love to pick up a Will Witherspoon from Carolina. Stud this year and he played MLB when he had to for Morgan. Someone else brought up Akin Ayodele of J'Ville. Both FAs.

I can't understand how anyone can dog Gaffney or Pitts for that matter. Chester Pitts (excluding false starts) is our best lineman. Gaffney has only done everything asked of him. It all boils down to our ex coaching staff with him IMO. I've seen a quality player when given the opportunity. Same with Armstrong. He could be really good, we just don't know. Every time he's been in the game he's shown me something. I'm not saying that Gaff is a superstar, but he certainly has not been chopped liver. I don't think he will ever be a #2, but he is the definition of a slot receiver IMO. I believe that this ex coaching staff never let this team take the training wheels off.

You can bet Drew will guide Gaff to the highest bidder - and that may not be the Texans. I would like to see him stay, if the price is right.

You have to take this whole season with a grain of salt and chalk it up to piss poor coaching. Numerous defensive players have stated that this scheme is too complicated and that they weren't given the right calls or freedom to make plays. The reigns were tightened on this whole team this season for some reason. I am anxious for the whole team to be given the chance just to play some football the way it was meant to be played and I think the outcome will be totally different with the same personell.

HoustonFrog you are right on with the Will Witherspoon assesment, Morknolle and Coach C. were talking about him with Andre Davis from Cleveland before he was resigned. Both of those guys are stud LBs. They will likely not make many pro-bowls if any, but they will be terrors for 10+ years in the NFL. I want Witherspoon badly, but with Greenwood and Wong taking up so much money throwing another 3-5mil at Witherspoon would be a uncap friendly. Especially since we have to go after Bentley, restructure McKinney and Wade, resign Wells, Gaffney and a few others. Plus I think a corner and Safety are something we have to look at in FA. I was looking at Ricky Manning Jr. from Carolina if we get an extra 3 or 4th round pick in the draft. He will likely have to be traded for, because he is a RFA. He would fit in very well with D-rob and we would have a some tacklers on the corner only problems is they are both short.

Yeah I had heard good things about him him this year and then they mentioned him in the beginning of the Bears game and how he would be a FA. He is one of those guys with a motor that is intense. I love that. But you are probably right with the cap money. I liked the fact that he was weakside but filled in for Morgan in the middle some. You can always use a guy who can do it all.

As for the Gafney argument. I'm not a big fan of his but I think people are more peeved that he hasn't produced compared to people taken after him...mainly Clinton Portis, Josh Reed, to some extent Antonio Bryant or Deshaun Foster and Deion Branch. All taken 2nd round after Gafney. Heck Pitts was taken the pick before Portis.

I believe when this team gets it's first win next season, things will get to snowballing in regards to excitement and spirit. With all this teams been thru and the suppression it's endured, it'll explode like a freshly pruned tree. I really believe the turnaround will be astounding. I don't think this team is as bad as the record would indicate, and most of the coaches from the opposing teams we've played stated the same thing. Most said in interviews prior to the games that this team isn't as bad as the record would indicate so they shouldn't be taken lightly. With the new staff in place and the different schemes tailored to the gifts of the squad, I believe the change will be miraculous. Write it on a calendar. 01/18/06 TA

I never felt Gaff was a #2 guy. I see him more as a possesion WR, #3 guy. Of course, I really like having 3 WRs out on the field all the time. Gaff could be a #2, but it depends how he will fit into the system Kubiak brings into Houston. I just think it would be funny if Armstrong and Mathis turned out to be the best fit in Kubiak's scheme.

i never see the guy..he is always at his velocity training place in town...his wife is hot though!!

I've never understood the Gaffney bashers. It seems like one of the biggest points that his detractors make is that he vanishes for stretches of the season.

Yes he's vanished from time to time. Nobody can deny that he's vanished from time to time. I haven't seen a single Texan who hasn't gone missing for one or more games at a time. Andre Johnson vanishes. Domanick Davis vanishes. David Carr has games where he just seems to dissappear. I think that's a combination of the offense we've been using and the offense simply being young.

I hope we bring back Gaffney because he's going to be a solid posession receiver for a long time to come. If he leaves we'll be losing him just as he enters what I think will be the most productive period of his career.

Steve McKinney's dad was my doctor in Centerville, Texas, when Steve was about 3 foot tall. He told me then, he'd grow up to be a great LG, but that the coaching staff of the Texans would play him at Center, and he'd have to listen to the BS of a bunch of know nothing fans tell HIM how to play football. The kid was danged insightful even at that age. :)

Interesting take by Gaffney. It kind of pokes some holes in the assumptions that the entire team has turned against Carr. :hmmm:

I'd like to see him stay and be a solid contributor as a possession receiver.

It wouldn't be smart of Gaffney to let some random people know his true feelings esp about his QB, hello????- a la TO- The Eagles Soap Opera

If this excerpt was from Gaffney's mom, dad, wife or inside the Gaffney family, then ok, it may have some merit.

But from what I see on the sidelines, doesn't look like too many guys are gaga over DC.

From what you see, which doesn't necessarily mean much since there is so much that goes on that normal fans don't know about. I see as much on the sidelines that implies the team likes him as I see stuff that implies they don't like him, so I don't know where this notion of "everyone hates Carr" started, and if this comment did indeed come from Gaffney I would trust what he says, and I tend to agree with it.
