So .... Who's your QB in 2014 ?! - [edit] Mallett?

Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Mallett

2011 season

Mallett made his preseason debut in the Patriots' first preseason game, a 47–12 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 11. He played the entire second half, completing 12 of 19 passes for 164 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. The Patriots scored touchdowns on each of the first four drives Mallett led, and ran out the clock on his fifth and final drive. Mallett struggled in his next preseason games throwing an interception which was returned for a touchdown in his second game. At his fourth preseason game against the Giants he was 6 for 16 for 57 yards. Mallett spent 2011 as the Patriots' third-string QB, behind Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer;[21] Mallett was inactive for 15 out of 16 regular season games and instead played on the practice squad of 5 players in 2011 and was inactive for every post season game for the Patriots' Super Bowl run.
2012 season

Following the Patriots' decision to release incumbent back-up quarterback Brian Hoyer prior to the season, Mallett was promoted to second string signal caller behind Tom Brady. Mallett dressed in each of the first eight games of the season, and in their blowout 45-7 rout over the St Louis Rams in London on 28 October 2012, Mallett took his first snaps in the NFL, completing 1/3 passes for 17 yards (his one completion to Shane Vereen) and a passer rating of 53.5. In the Patriots blowout victory against the Houston Texans in December 2012, Mallett came into the game late in the fourth quarter and threw his first interception in the NFL on a pass deflected by intended receiver Visanthe Shiancoe.

This guy hasn't done jack in the NFL. I don't know why he'd even be considered, except for just BOB "knowing" him.

Is Mallet suppose to beat out Tom Brady for the starting position? Put Russel Wilson behind Tom Brady and Wilson wouldn't be doing jack either. B'OB "knowing" him is the reason why if this trade goes down it even happens

#Texans-Ryan Mallett reports have merit. Deal could be completed soon. Appears to have no bearing on #Texans' No. 1 pick. #NFL

Im ok if its a 4th or higher

Realistically, t isn't going to be, is it?

I'm thinking it is either a 2nd, or the trade is in exchange for us flipping our 2nd and 3rd round picks with NE.

Really can't see any reason they'd be giving him up for less than a 3rd - I guess with our high position in the 3rd if they're really willing to trade, then they might bite at that, but I don't really see it happening - NE are typically pretty shrewd with their trades and often get more back than they spent.

He is a free agent after this season. Something is better than nothing

That is true - I just don't see New England giving up a guy who they must trust to cover Brady if he goes down for anything less than a 3rd.

I don't know, perhaps it is a historical, annecdotal bias from how well they've worked the FA/draft markets - but I just don't see New England giving him up for a low draft pick in an act of desperation to get something back for him.

Edit: I will be stoked if we can pick him up for a late round draft pick - I'm just trying not to get my expecations up that there is going to be great value for us on this one.

No, but he has failed when he has played. It's not like he put up good numbers and just was not Tom Brady. His numbers suck. I am afraid they are going to make this guy our starter just because has worn a Patriot logo.

Wonder if its contingent on him agreeing to an extension. Hope it would be one similar to Fitzpatrick though.....

For those wanting to know what the comp for Mallett is @tomecurran said on 610 it will be a 5 thru 7th rounder

For Mallett to join #Texans, expected he'd first have to agree to a contract extension. #NFL #Patriots

5-7th rd round pick? Gold. Now don't screw it up by giving him a dumb contract.

Well - looks like I'm completely wrong.

Looks like a good value deal there, and it is contingent on him accepting what we think he is worth at this point. Don't see a downside there - and gives us the freedom to go D with the 1st pick.

I´d do it in a heartbeat for a 5th-7th rounder (although that must mean NE is not too high on him). But I´d still consider drafting a QB if one of the top3 drop out of the first.

sigh...I have to keep posting this in multiple forums. lol

he is a free agent after this year. If Brady is playing 2-3 more years why would you want to pay a back up QB millions? get something, ANYTHING for him while you can

Well, if they only can get a 5th-7th rounder for him, he wouldn`t have demanded big money in FA. And Brady is getting up there in age as well. If they really liked him, I am sure they would try to keep him or get a lot out of him. A 7th rounder would basically be just giving him away for nothing.

If he knows he doesn't have a chance in hell at even getting a chance to start why would he stay for less?

I understand your point - but with his numbers, I don't think it is that much of a deal. He is a good insurance policy for the upcoming year at an affordable price. He is getting paid under $800,000 for this upcoming year, for someone who the Pats have been able to work with over the past 3 years, so they must have a degree of comfort with him.

If I were a Pats fan I would probably be questioning why someone who has the reps in pracise and familiarity and can be their backup for one more year is being shipped out for a 5th rounder or less (unless, they really have that little faith in him, which is a warning sign for the Texans).

Don't want and wouldn't offer anything more than a 5th. Who are we bidding against? He's a FA next year, what are they going to do? Say no and sign him to a big extension instead?

I thought this was dead when we brought in Fitz.

But.

If it only takes a 5-6th rounder... I'd be OK with that.

He knows the system and he knows OB.

Or if he wouldn't do a deal with the Pats because he wants to find a place where he can at least compete for a starting position.

Oh from his perspective this works out great. He gets a shot to try and get a multi-year contract with another team and try be the starter, and if that doesn't work out see out the season, pick up the $800,000, and position yourself for the FA market next year where you'll have the pick of the NFL who are interested in a QB.

It is the Pats side, that I'm questioning more than anything.

I agree. It's a trap. If we have to sign him to a long term extension then we are in trouble. The Pats organization isn't dumb. If they are willing to send him off for a 5-7 then that should tell you something.

I only do this if we don't draft any QB's at all. We have a ton of holes to fill, we can't waste 2 picks on QB's.

I much prefer to take our own QB somewhere 3rd-5th rounds.

When Belichick wants to give you something you should step back and check your pockets to make sure your wallet and keys are still there. Probably should look at your watch as well.

For some reason I just feel like this is a big dicking about to happen to the Texans.

if anyone knows what mallet can do it's prob BoB

No doubt about it. In his one year working with the offense and watching the rookie try to figure out where everything was and learn his playbook I'm sure he learned everything there is to know about Mallet.

Familiar? Yes. Really sure about him? I don't think so. If he'd come from the Patriots directly and coached him for a couple of years I'd feel better. If he'd watched him develop. He's better informed than most (probably more familiar with him than Kubiak was with Schaub) but I don't think he's immunized from getting fleeced by Hoodie.

Our qb coach was on the Pats staff the last three seasons so I'm sure he knows everything that BOB needs to know about Mallet.

I think the Texans move back up. Either that or the Pats draft teddy and Pats trade Malett

They're thinking Brady is going to be the man for another three years. They won't be drafting a QB before the third, if they take one in the third at all. They're most likely looking at guys like Tom Savage, Keith Wenning, maybe a guy like Stephen Morris from Miami.

Am I the only one thrilled with the idea of selecting Derek Carr at pick #33 tomorrow night? My goodness gracious what a talent. Get over the fact his brother sucked. He's a completely different man and player. We have better talent and coaching this time around.

This is true. I mean, Carr is accurate as hell; he has a great arm, great touch, and is pretty intelligent, but his footwork stinks...which makes me think the Texans' apparent philosophy is no matter who they pick will pretty much sit for a while. Footwork can be corrected. He has all of the other tools.

I like Carr at 2.1. Good to great QB.
