BUENO!
I finished watching this game and immediately began wondering what all this meant. What in the hell did I just watch and where is this thing headed? The Texans would (I was certain) beat the Cardinals. This was a Carson Palmer led team that's been inept for years so surely this would be the turnaround for our season. Too late maybe to save the playoffs but in time to maybe contend for a Wild Card and in time to see the team rebuilt around a young, mobile, QB. No more Schaub-ball sounded good to me.

Now I'm thinking we're maybe a 4 win team. 6 at the outside. I think that a lot more is broken than I was willing to believe and I think that things aren't really going to change as much as I wanted them to.

Coaching. I feel pretty confident that the coaching staff (with the possible exception of the epically inept Coach Joe on Special Teams) is coming back. I think that Arian Foster going on IR is probably a sign that the team is willing to pack in its hopes for 2013 and call the season on account of injury. This has happened in the past and now, just like then the wave of injuries will be used as an all-purpose "cover" for everything that didn't work the way it was supposed to this year. The official party line will be that injuries killed the 2013 season. That's how the 2010 season was explained away and nothing really changed after that.

Coach Joe will finally get the boot but it will be a quiet, honorable kicking to the curb. Gary will come back and take over mentoring Case for the future. Wade will come back and continue waiting to see if Gary is going to get fired. Special Teams will get better. Offense will get better. Defense will continue to slide.

Schaub is done here. Ed Reed is going home. Antonio Smith is going too. Arian Foster may never come back to play and even if he does he may never be the RB we remember. No, Ben Tate isn't a viable substitute for Arian Foster. Ben Tate is an excellent compliment to Arian Foster. That's about it.

The Texans will dump every bit of salary they can get away with dumping and go young in 2014. They'll win 8-9 games and call it a success since they were "rebuilding" from the disasterous 2013 campaign and there was so much turnover.

I think ultimately watching the 2014 (and even 2015) Texans will be just as frustrating as the 2006-2013 Texans have been.

Same thing that was apparent several seasons ago which is that we've just got an average OC that is our head coach. This team still struggles with the same issues it always has under this administration, and refuses to hold the proper parties accountable. More special teams problems tonight. Another awful 2nd half which has been one of the most glaring issues under Kubiak. He can't make adjustments from season to season with the league changing and he is even worse at the halftime adjustments. It's plagued this team in different ways from season to season, but it's what we still have until Mcnair decides to get over his fear of hiring a new regime.

Good post Herv. Until both Kubiak and Wade are gone, we will continue to feel the pain of what could have been. It wouldn't surprise me a damn bit to see all the same coaches back next year. I'm getting to old for this $hit.

Given the board's somewhat muted response to today's loss, I was reminded of the five stages of grief and loss.

1.) Denial - I think we've been past this stage for a few weeks now, but for the few that may have been stubbornly hanging on to the notion that the season wasn't over yet ... he's dead, Jim.

2.) Anger - Most seem to be past this stage as well. No raging, screaming posts or threads about how awful the team played or how they should have won. I think last week might have been the end of that, for the most part.

3.) Bargaining - not really something you can do with football, and Houston in general has never been able to bargain with the football gods, so the analogy fails here. Still, I'm sure there have been a few people secretly praying and offering up bargains on their own. :D

4.) Depression - seems to be the primary stage most people are in, right?

5.) Acceptance - this is where I am and have been since the KC loss. The season is done and this team is just not good. Whatever quality we had at LB left with Cushing's ligament, the secondary just sucks, and the DL is JJ Watt and a bunch of scrubs. At least one OLman shouldn't even be in the NFL and the rest are either injured tot he point that their play sucks or they just suck. The QB was finally upgraded from pathetic to rookie. The RB corps is gone, ineffective, or smoking cigars. The WRs have been a bit of a bright spot, but only when the aforementioned QB gets them the ball. The TEs aren't worth mentioning, and the STs are bottom quarter of the league bad.

This is just not a good team. And it's coached and managed by people that assembled this collection of talent.

Agree, but, we have to be realistic. The odds of Kubiak getting fired are slim. SHOULD he be fired? Of course. But, realistically, it probably won't happen.

Kubiak's contract is through 2014. That gives him one more season after this.

Prediction: Kubiak will get an extension and a massive raise, with McNair saying he had to do it so Kubiak wouldn't be a lame duck coach among his staff.

It would not shock me if Kubiak is one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL next year.

Real talk.

To truly become a competent organization, its time to clean house. It should be the first step before deciding to draft a QB early, because there are way to many holes on the team. I am of the belief a QB should not be drafted with this coaching staff. They'll just ruin him like they will possibly do with Keenum by not being able to make adjustments. No QB can fix that. Or fix the mentality to play not to lose when at the opponents 30 yard line not taking a shot at the end zone. The holes last year were covered by weak competition.

Yes, but, our head coach, who is young, works out every single day, is healthy and in good shape, was so worried about this season (for good reason) that he had a mini-stroke. That will play into McNair's thinking.

I like Gary as a person. I lived in Denver when he was there, and there was panic in the streets when we thought he was leaving the Bronco's. But, he was OC then.

As a head coach, he is terrible.

I see it completely different. Joe Marciano is the only ST coach the Texans have ever had. I think Joe has a special blessing from McNair. If McNair loses the fans and there is outrage and mutiny then all other coaches and Rick Smith need to duck and cover.

Well I think this comes down to whether McNair is a man of his word (Super Bowl or bust) or he sticks with his loyalties.

I have a hard time seeing McNair keeping this coaching staff intact, but who knows.

So, What do you think you know? Peer into the future and tell us what you see.

What we know is this league is all about the QB, and we need one.

I'm also getting the sense there needs to & will be an internal re-organization... I'd like to be a fly on the wall for Ed Reed's exit interview.

I think it was game 3, maybe 4, that I made that thread about this being a 8-8 or worse team. From that point, I knew this season was done. This loss doesn't shock me any more than the previous one. We're just a losing team. Our defense is outdated and all the problems on offense are still there, only compounded now by injuries, which is part of what I brought up in my OP of that thread. Things were only going to get worse when injuries start to pile up.

Texans don't win anymore games this year

With the 3rd pick they sign best defensive player
Many tenured vets cut.
OL help signed via FA
Defense heavy draft

I know this city is cursed. We will continue to come up short no matter who is gm, coaching, or QB barring a Christmas miracle.

That's where I am at right now. I am the equivalent of a Chicago Cubs fan.

But, before each and every game day I will support this team expecting something different.

Sigh.

I question how much football you watch with statements like that. :kitten:

The Dolts and Cowboys GOT BLOWN OUT I freakin GOOD !!!!!!! LOL

Anywayz the future I hope next or this year we hit the reset button and retool and get rdy for the 2015 season cus that's when we play the SB in Houston and I expect the Texans to host a home SB game

I see this team finishing at 5-11. I don't foresee this because of any football/schedule analysis. I predict it because it will bring Kubiak to a perfect milquetoast .500 on his career.

After that, Kubiak will be kept on because...well, I don't know why. That is just what the Texans do.

Kubes will then polish the turd a little bit and the Texans will finish 8-8. Another. Texans. Non-losing. Season! That will earn him an extension because change is scary, and change might lead to a bad season.

================

However, make no mistake about it. This is a bad football team. They are 2-7 because they can't win football games, not because of any of the myriad excuses we will see the rest of the season. They are so bad that there is plenty of blame to go around, from the owner through the players. I'd prefer the crystal ball to say the front office is replaced, the coaching is replaced, and the new coach replaces all those players that aren't pulling their weight.

Sadly, I know crystal balls aren't real, so that won't happen. On the other hand, bad Texans decision making is a demonstrable fact. I don't expect much change.

With the 3rd pick in the 2014 NFL draft the Houston Texans select -

The best OT available.

Right now I like Matthews for the right side. I don't watch tons of college football so I could be persuaded that there is a better RT out there, but we need to replace Newton and I don't want to pin my hopes that Williams is going to be the guy. I think Quessenberry can step into Wade Smith's shoes and be the starter at LG. Without a RT it won't matter who is our QB.

Crystal ball time:

We'll end up with 5 wins and get a top 10 pick.
We will have a new HC, OC, and DC next year. ST too.
I think the GM stays next year. He doesn't necessarily deserve to stay, but he will.

I don't think this is a bad team. There are some very good players. There are some good players. There are some bad players. With upgrades at a few positions and a much better coaching philosophy we can be right back in the playoffs. Parity makes it easy to bounce back. We have more talent than all but a few teams in the NFL. Our coaches hold us back more than anything.

A high draft pick, new coaches, and cutting some dead wood. Thats what I see.'

I have been a Kubiak fan from the start, I waivered a little a couple of years back, but he needs to go now. This team is too talented to be where it is today.

This team is too talented to be where it is today.

People keep saying that, but I am not sure I buy it.

QB: Most important position on the field, and our hopes are pinned on an undrafted free agent that hasn't seen enough snaps to know whether he belongs yet. And while he's getting those snaps, people already expect him to be the next Tom Brady or Drew Brees, all the while ignoring how long it took those guys to become who they are.

RB: This is a bright spot when there are no injuries, but Tate is gone at the end of this year and the Texans made no plans to replace him. Foster's back is bad and he's done for the year. At a position that has the shortest career average of any, talent only goes so far.

WR: We are now finding out just how much AJ's talent has been wasted, and we all knew he was one of the top 3 or 4 WRs any given year anyway. Hopkins looks like the real deal and Posey shows promise, but none of that matters without a QB and OL.

OL: Duane Brown. That's it. I know, you Myers fans are still out there, but I've never been a fan and don't consider him more talented than half the rest of the centers in the NFL. Newton doesn't belong in the NFL, period. Brooks and Wade Smith are just guys, at best. I really only see one guy on the OL that you'd call talented, and he has turf toe or whatever it is with his foot.

TE: It's not like they have Gates, Gonzales, Graham, or Gronkowski even when the TEs are healthy, is it?

DL: JJ Watt. Antonio Smith is inconsistent enough that I don't consider him any more talented than any other NFL JAG, especially at his age. Crick? Pass. Mitchell? Pass. How sad is it that the Texans upgrade path was Cody to Mitchell?

LB: Cushing and NOBODY. For a team that runs a 3-4, they sure do have a bunch of nothing at LB, jeez.

CB: JJo used to be a talented guy, but he sure as hell hasn't played like it for a season and a half now. We were told Kareem Jackson was the most NFL ready CB in that draft, but he took 3 seasons just to get up to JAG status. He's no better than JAG. McCain should join Newton for some cigar smoking. Harris was drafted int he second round and is just now starting to see a few plays here and there. If he's talented, we sure as hell don't know it.

S: Let's see, what above average safety do we have? None.

STs: This is where the team has had some talent. Unlike their coach, however, those talented players were fired and made Pro Bowls with other teams.

Seriously, what talent am I missing? We have maybe a half dozen players that are better than average out of 53. And as a unit, it's not like the sum is better than the parts. I just am not sure I buy the "too talented" bit. I think the Texans have downgraded too many positions from above average to average or below in the last couple years.

Yep, I agree. I like some elements of this team and there are some adjustments that can be made.

You described it and it has been debated, but the most important position is the qb and that question needs to be solved. I think case has played good enough to be in a qb competition next season, that's it. Since they are tight on money, they will either have to bring in a vet or draft one. I prefer the draft myself.

Rb is the position where I think they could use some more dynamic players. I would retain tate,if possible cut foster, and draft a young rb to handle the 3rd down stuff. They need a matchup back unlike tate or foster. Sproles/woodehead type of back.

Wr seems to be the best position with aj,the steady and on coming of hopkins and posey. In a great oc's mind,I would just run 11 personell like the 98 vikes and the 05 colts and force teams to matchup. They could also use a guy who can run by people.

Te is the most overrated position on this team. graham, daniels, nor anyone else on this roster scares dc's. None of these guys threaten the safeties or are capable of explosive plays. A cheap add would be someone like fred davis imo.

O-line with the exception of newton and smith are ok. I think jones can play the lg and quessenbury the rt and they would be ok.

D-line is probably the biggest issue for me. Watt is awesome, I think crick will be good too,but mitchell is terrible. He's so bad he alters the entire defensive gameplan. No pressure,no pocket push, nothing. If they get a big, stout guy at nt,it will make the d-line an a+.

Lbs are also an issue, but most is because of what happens up front. Wade has to double gut blitz to get pressure because mitchell has been terrible. This dominoe effect springs leaks everywhere else. Mercilus get good pressure, but guess where the qb goes? He climbs in the pocket. If the nt was better,it would make both the ilb and olbs more productive. We've dscussed before that if the texans don't get a nt,cush will not make it. Guess what,he didn't make it a half a season.

Db is another concern. They could basically upgrade every spot in the backfield. Joseph and jackson have been avg, mccain has been horrible, keo must have pictures. They could go raiders route and get some 1 yr vets along with drafting some guys.

Hey, if you're going to dream, might as well dream big

Well, it's been 4 yrs since he said he had no plans to coach in the immediate future and more importantly almost 3.5 yrs since his wife passed away. His daughters are older- one is married and the other is engaged - not sure on his other daughter.

I mean how much can racing cars, making movies and talking about the NFL cut the mustard for him? It's time for him to return and prove he can do it again:goodpost:

Somewhere in the depths where the heat singes your eyes, crys for help deafen your ears, and sulfer kicks you in the nose with every breath, there's a form. That form turns slowly in the darkness and both of his boney hands extend toward Houston. One crooked finger on each hand comes out, and bud smiles. We'll draft Derek Carr.

Schaub will be cut and the jags will pick him up while they groom their rookie qb. Schaub will lead them in 2 victories against us next year. More fans will stop by his house.

Foster will tweak his hamstring again this offseason while making more truck commercials.

Coach Joe will finally be given his walking papers and he'll reunite with Trindon in Denver as an assistant special teams coach. Trindon will finish his career as the nfl's all time leading return man. In his Hall of Fame induction speech he'll give all the credit to coach joe.

Derek Carr and his dad will not make any mention of hair or haircuts to the Houston media. Derek will take up his brothers mantle as momentum bmw spokesman. He'll use the phrase, "No one engineers a drive like bmw, present company excluded." And I'll cringe everytime I hear it just like I used to.

Wade will go elsewhere as D coordinator and for the next 2 seasons pundits will adore his creative schemes and declare him an innovator. Then year 3 will happen and he'll soon find another team.

Vince young will be invited to kubiaks house before kubes leaves. Theyll eat sausage together and talk about what couldve been. Before the evenings over vince will lay his hands on gary and cure him of all ailments.

And we'll all keep waiting for that elusive super bowl.

I think I went through all 5 stages in the off season when we didn't really change anything.

I thought we had a chance at making the play offs though....until I actually looked at the schedule when that texans will 8-8 thread was started before the season. When I actually thought about it, I knew this would be a tough season.

The defense wasn't this juggernaut that was going to win games and I had no faith in the qb and head coach along with a list of other issues. So while everyone was excited about those two early wins I just couldn't really go there. As a fan I want to go into the season believing we are either building towards something or competing for a Super Bowl. I felt neither was going to happen.

My crystal ball prediction for the texans is that if kubiak is brought back he'll have to change his ways in order for this team to be successful. No more ho humming late reactions to everything. Identify issues and jump on them. I think we'd be fine with case at qb...he'll get better.

Head coach's attitude needs to carry over to the defense as well. And they have to stop making these questionable roster decisions and for these guys that haven't performed like really good players they need legit competition for their spots. Brice McCain, Brooks Reed, Derek newton, Keyshawn Martin, earl Mitchell, the OLB's, trevardo Williams, Lestar jean...ect, ect....

No more gifting guys positions. Legit competition and don't be afraid to draft guys to come in and challenge guys. We don't really do that.

Change the culture. Challenge guys. Get more aggressive in everything you do. You want it, go get it. Don't sit back and just hope good things come.

Kubiak needs to develop that mindset or we need a coach who comes with it.

*Disclaimer: I'm not a real fortune teller. I just play one on the internets.*

The Texans extend their on-going longest losing streak in franchise history to 8.

They finally win a game, their last win of the season, against Jacksonville.

They end the season 3-13. 2013 will be argued as the worst season in franchise history, even over 2-14, simply because this team was coming off two playoff seasons and most folks had them winning the division and trying to go deeper in the playoffs. Expectations were much higher going into 2013 than they ever were in 2005.

Beyond that - into the off-season - I'm going to quote Yoda:

“The dark side clouds everything. Impossible to see the future is.”

I could assume McNair cleans house after 3-13. But honestly, it would not shock me to see him keep Kubiak and shuffle lots of pieces around. I would not agree with it, but I'm a mere fan, so what I think is irrelevant.
