Slowik and the offense

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/texans/article/bobby-slowik-parted-ways-demeco-20053807.php

Offensive line coach Chris Strausser is also out, and assistant offensive line coach Cole Popovich’s contractexpired.

Many in the building thought they’d have one of the best offenses in the league.

But Slowik’s offense never lived up to the hype, never made adjustments or improvements.

Ryans was noticeably frustrated, indicating that the offense needed to improve. Quarterback C.J. Stroud, as well as other offensive players, had also expressed some frustration behind the scenes, and pondered whether Slowik would return the following season.

But ultimately the final decision rested on Ryans, who felt the Texans had a roster ready to compete for a Super Bowl, two league sources told the Chronicle.

The rest of the offensive staff will be evaluated when the new offensive coordinator is hired. So Popovich could return.

There are no immediate front runners for the job, but quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson was once thought to be a logical replacement. Other hot names include Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, who also happens to be close with Slowik, Rams passing game coordinator Nick Caley, former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, and Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown, who was once a serious candidate in 2022 to be the Texans' head coach.

There are several articles similar to the one below with metrics and results that demonstrates what makes him a good OL coach. I hope the Texans can interview him before the Patriots.
That was an impressive unit Munchak had in Pittsburgh. His results in Denver were mixed, but that situation was a mess. Munchak has been a consultant with the Rams the past 2 seasons? Does he still want to coach? Does he want to be a full time coach? And does Munchak have ties to Vrabel?

I'm surprised Popovich was kicked.
Whelp, I guess NC knows what's going on behind the scenes better than me.

Despite the recent bitter cold spell, looks like 2025 may be off to a good start for the texans. Now let's bring in some offensive guards and a couple of wide receivers this off season.

I'm pretty shocked by this. I think it needed to be done, but I also thought the team would see if Slowik could improve in year 3.
Personally, I'd like to see Chip Kelly come in. Dude knows how to run an offense.

What's funny. These are the same complaints, criticisms and observations we've posted about all season? If we saw the issues, opposing DCs definitely figured out the offense. Yes, he had some unfortunate injuries, but too often, he kept doing the same thing and expected different results. How much evidence do you need to see Mason is not a pulling OG or Schultz couldn't block or Green was getting CJ killed or Scruggs couldn't make the OL calls?

I started feeling that DeMeco needed to become more engaged on the offensive side and didn't think he would fire him. I was even willing to give Slowik another season with a seasoned offensive assistant. This again shows how little we know of the inner workings at NRG.

Since Jeff Fisher was a run first HC and skews the OL pass protection numbers, Munchak's work with the Titans OL was also rated highly. Here is Munchak talking about ZBS.

I'm seeing lots of board members calling for Chip Kelly but like Mike Munchack, he's older
and has no real personal or professional connections down this way.
I dunno what's the appeal or attraction for somebody like that to come down here ?

Wow, just when I made a long post stating the case to keep Bobby…

Makes me think they have a guy lined up. Not used to a team that moves on so fast from subpar results! Usually we sit in mediocrity for a few years until the bottom falls out and results are undeniable that a firing needs to happen.

Maybe this is the move Mixon was talking about. They probably asked all the key offensive guys about Slowik and they all probably had strong opinions about his limitations.

Demeco coached under Chip Kelley. That is the connection.

Edit - Demeco played not coached under Kelly.

Slowik needs help. I don’t fully trust his feel for the game’s flow, especially in-game adjustments. It's like the offense tries to execute a pre-determined plan, regardless of how the opposing defense is reacting. That approach works at the start of games with scripted plays, but eventually, you need to be able to recognize what’s working and what’s not. I felt like the team didn’t mix things up enough to exploit defenses’ weaknesses, nor did they adjust the tempo to keep the defense on its toes. The times they did make adjustments, it seemed like it was when they were already trailing.

I’m wondering if it’s a personnel issue, player limitations, or if Slowik is just too green. But, some of this was apparent even in year 1. At the time, I know I was so enamored with the new beginnings (staff and players) that the concerns were overlooked because of the excitement around the wins. So IMO, as mentioned by some, DeMeco needs to consider bringing in an experienced coach to help Slowik, whatever the title is, as long as it works for egos. We just wrapped up year 2, there’s plenty of room for growth but if Slowik returns for year 3, the progress needs to be significant - leaps and bounds compared to the first two years.
DeMeco owes me a field pass for making all these keyboard strokes useless! :foottap:

Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, who also happens to be close with Slowik, Rams passing game coordinator Nick Caley, former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy,

Did LaFluer get fired? Why would he make a lateral move?

I could see McCarthy, actuality where's Kellen Moore? Let's get him in here.

From their friendship to their coaching roots. Robert Saleh and Matt LaFleur were very similar to DeMeco and Slowik. Ironically, Saleh fired LaFleur for the same reasons DeMeco had to fire Slowik.

I would pass on Mike LaFleur.

Since 2002 the Texans have not been able to find linemen that can run a screen. Even Kubiak's line. I just don't understand it.

Everyone knows you’re only OC in name under McVay. McVay is calling the plays. O’Connell was the same when he was OC under McVay.

So lateral move by title, but different in level of responsibility imo.

Kellen Moore is Philly’s OC I believe and is up for HC gigs…would be a definite lateral move for him.

I don't know what to think about Kelly. At one point, he was highly regarded as this great offensive mind who Belichick spent time with to understand his offense and integrate it with the Patriots. He gets hired by the Eagles and his personality and quirks rub players and the FO the wrong way. He then goes to the 49ers and is fired after one year.

Maybe he would be a better NFL OC than HC. I just don't know. It could work or fail spectacularly.

Meh

His offenses start out working then by not having personnel or being solved they sputter.

He was hired as a HC because of his fast, high powered offense.

I just think he's pass happy.
He runs a lot and passes a lot. I actually think that pace and tempo could go well with DeMeco’s SWARM defense. Why not put both opposing units in a pressure cooker and annihilate our opponents?

Hiring someone based upon what they did with a college recruiting program like Ohio State or Oregon would be downright stupid. I can’t think of anything more apples and oranges.

No to McCarthy too…just not impressed with him as a creative play caller or someone who can develop an offensive identity.

I know I’m late to the party here, but I’m surprised as hell Demeco has cleaned house. But very very … VERY….pleasantly surprised. I just expected Slowick to be kept because that’s how they always ran their business. This tells me that Demeco is in charge.
Interesting, how do you know that Demeco made the decision?

The Lions would be a good gig. Lots of weapons and a Super Bowl contender.

I agree. I just put the Texans ahead because the difference between Goff and Stroud is one is on a rookie contract. And I am a homer. Other than that they are pretty even.

They were a Super Bowl contender this year but after an injury plagued season finished the same way we did. They face a degree of uncertainty too.

Losing their coordinators will hurt them too. Is the defense going to take a step back without Aaron Glenn? Can their offense be as good with a new coordinator?

I would choose a coordinator that leans on the running game. That's the strength of the offense. Goff is averaging over 10 yds/attempt on play action.
