Sherman's Recruiting

Looks like Sherman is hitting the ground sprinting on his recruiting....

Derrick Hall is Dante cousin and a 4 star national top 100 guy

Can a 15-minute conversation change a person's future? It appears that is exactly what happened on Wednesday night with Beaumont Central athlete Derrick Hall.

Derrick Hall is slated to play tailback in coach Sherman's new system at A&M
Hall, who has been committed to Texas A&M since February, had been wavering to the point that he was very close to de-committing from the Aggies and writing them off completely as recently as this evening. However, a phone call from newly-appointed head coach Mike Sherman changed all of that.

"Whoo, that man gave me chills," Hall said of Sherman. "He called me up tonight and talked to me for at least 15 minutes. He said that he talked to me longer than he's even talked to anybody at A&M."

Hall, who measures in at 5-foot-10 and 201 pounds, can play a number of positions, but he has an admitted preference. It turns out that the new Aggie coach had the same thing in mind.

"He said, 'What do you think you wanna play in college?'" Hall said of Sherman. "I just said that I'm an athlete. He said, 'Well, I'm gonna tell you the honest truth, I've seen a lot of talent in the NFL and I see you as a running back all the way. I'll play you as a freshman hands down.'

"I was like, 'This man has coached some serious guys in the league and he's telling me he can get me ready for that.' He's an NFL coach. He knows what he's talking about. I was just like, 'Dang.'"

In fact, Sherman's other NFL connections impressed the Rivals100 prospect as well.

"He said he's gonna put together a staff of a bunch of guys that have coached in the league," said Hall. "That blew me away. I realized that I was talking to Mike Sherman! Mike Sherman is sitting here on the phone with me telling me that he sees me as a big-time running back!

"He asked me how much I weighed – 'like 180 or something.' I told him I was a little over 200 pounds and he said he couldn't believe that a guy my size was that fast. He asked me what I ran in the 100 (meter dash) and I told him and he was really impressed. He said he was gonna use me next year for sure."

In the obvious excitement following the conversation, Hall said that he had done a 180-degree turn in his thinking from earlier in the night.

"I tell you what – I'm an Aggie; rock-solid," said Hall. "Change me back to a solid commit. He got me excited for next year. I've still got chills.

"We're gonna have a totally different team next year. It's gonna be a different attitude. We're gonna come out and surprise some folks. I can't tell you, man – I'm just excited."

Hall had an official visit scheduled to Missouri in a week and a half but he says that he has no plans to take that trip any longer.

"I'm cancelling that Missouri visit," said Hall. "I'm an Aggie. Mark it down. There's no need for me to visit [Missouri] anymore."

If a 15 minute conversation can change someones mind that much, and make it completely cancel his other recruiting trips, Sherm has some power.

This is the line that has me wondering.

"He said he's gonna put together a staff of a bunch of guys that have coached in the league," said Hall.

I'm wondering if he's going to get Johnny Holland (LB's Coach) from the Texans and maybe offer him the DC position. Don't know how good he would be as a DC, but if he could bring back the "Wrecking Crew" attitude and style of play, I'm thinking they would have to be better than they were the last 5 years. JMHO! :d:

sure is starting off good. If he can get that recruit to NOT even go visit the #1 Team in the Nation and possible Big XII/Nat'l Champions (Missouri) that's pretty incredible.

Holland turned him down, that doesn't mean he wont get some pretty good coaches to CS, he will. Sherrill did the same thing when he came in, brought in the best position coaches money could buy, and then guys started getting drafted higher and higher. It all starts with coaching the athletes you have.

BTW Aggies bring back Cassidy .

Sherman now has his man to run the recruiting while he coaches football here in Houston. He has made the right moves so far. Watch out Mack Brown there is a real coach in the state, not just a pretty boy recruiter.

I thought I heard McLain say that Holland wasn't going anywhere......? Someone else catch that?!?

I know someone close to JH (family member not work associate or media type) and asked that person directly. Essentially I got no response but also no denial -- which leads me to believe that it's not totally out of the question and may be under consideration. I think it's still a little early in the process to be speaking in definites. The only reason I post this is because the speculation will probably be there anyway until JH and/or the Texans confirms or denies his interest. As far as media speculation, if it was Mark Berman who said JH isn't going anywhere I might listen.

I'm guessing that in the wake of the Sherman announcement, Kubiak and Smith probably want to minimize distractions and won't allow their position coaches to speak publicly on this until after the Jax game.

Fixed this link from above -> BTW Aggies bring back Cassidy .

I seriously doubt it.

Not me it's a classic Aggie thing to be the in CS bubble...overate yourself....come out early and flop.

Not the biggest Mack Fan myself but for not being a real coach he's done far better at his worst then A&M at their best.

Boils down to in the end of wanting to win a National Title. A&M seems to just want to beat UT as their title.

Wow, are Longhorn fans really that cocky?

You see the thing is, after a five loss season it is a big deal to beat the longhorns. UT has been in the mix of things the past few years and there is nothing we like more than to beat them at the end of the year. But we also want to beat every other team we play.

If you really think TAMU goes into the season completely focused on beating Texas you are very naive.

You are right about Texas having better recruiting classes, but dont forget that the Aggies owned UT in the 80's and 90's...things change.

Bill Byrne wants to win championships in every sport at A&M.
