Sherman:No worries as Texas A&M waits

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Come Wednesday, Mike Sherman will have been Texas A&M's football coach for one month. From the outside, it doesn't look as if he's done much.

Jittery A&M fans should take comfort knowing that Sherman has not ignored his new duties this December, according to school officials.

A&M athletic director Bill Byrne knew Sherman had to complete his obligation as the Houston Texans' offensive coordinator before becoming a full-time Aggie. The Texans' season finale is next Sunday.

The recruiting trail

Working in the NFL takes an incredible commitment. By all appearances, Sherman has spent what little free time he's had dealing with A&M recruiting.

With the help of the current coaching staff, the Aggies have held on to 24 oral commitments. The class is ranked 10th nationally by Rivals.com.

Sherman called A&M's orally committed players shortly after being hired on Nov. 26, mainly to introduce himself. He's also made two trips to College Station to meet recruits in person.

McKinney Boyd receiver Jeff Fuller, rated by Rivals.com as the state's 13th-best recruit, met Sherman on Dec. 7. Fuller had given an oral commitment to Oklahoma but changed his mind and switched to A&M. Fuller is expected to enroll in January.

The Texans hosted the Denver Broncos on Dec. 13, a Thursday night. Sherman spent the next two days in College Station, meeting with about 10 recruits who were making unofficial visits.

Birdville quarterback Tommy Dorman, who was in attendance, said Sherman met with all the recruits for about 15 minutes. Then Sherman sat with Dorman and his family for about 30 minutes during lunch so he could get to know them.

"He talked about his family, and we talked about ours," Dorman said. "We just got to know each other a little bit. It's a lot easier to talk to someone when you're sitting there face to face. I was very impressed."

Fortunately for Sherman, he didn't have to recruit too long.

Yeah we have some names to be excited about. Big time DE Matt Moore or something like that signed his letter of intent. Fuller seems like he might be the big time WR threat we've been looking for. And Derek Hall, Dante Hall's brother, had fallen out of love with A&M. One call from Sherman changed that and he is firm in his decision to come play for us. I was not happy about the Sherman decision. I really hope I continue to eat crow.

Goodson, who had declined interview requests the last couple of weeks, finally addressed rumors that he might transfer to LSU. Before A&M’s practice at Trinity in preparation for Saturday’s Valero Alamo Bowl, Goodson said he intends to stay at A&M.

More interesting news on the Aggie front Reggie Herring Arkansas interim HC and Defensive Coordinator seems to have agree to be the Aggies new DC.

Also being reported by the Dallas News Sherman is courting Major Applewhite to be the QB coach, a step down from his current position and a cut in pay. So not likely in my opinion.

Also Sherman is reported to be looking at Clancy Barone to be his OC. Clancy Barone worked with Sherman at A&M in 93 as a grad assistant. Since then he has sent 27 offensive lineman to the NFL in 17 years, not a shabby record. Must know something.

Doubt he gets Applewhite but the coordinators if hired are an upgrade, and the aggies need the upgrade in the coaching ranks.

COLLEGE STATION — Hours before the Seattle Seahawks blew past the Washington Redskins in an NFL wild-card playoff game, Texas A&M announced it was snaring one of the Seahawks' assistant coaches.

New A&M coach Mike Sherman said Saturday that the Aggies have hired Seattle receivers coach Nolan Cromwell as their offensive coordinator.

“The Big 12 schedule is similar to the NFL,” said Cromwell, who will arrive in College Station once Seattle's season ends. “There are no easy weeks.”

Unfortunately for Cromwell, he will be missing one of the keys to the A&M offense next season. Junior tight end Martellus Bennett announced Saturday that he plans to turn pro.

Bennett, who is 6-foot-7 and 255 pounds, led the Aggies (7-6) this past season with 49 catches for 587 yards. Bennett declared his decision at his family's home in the Houston suburb of Alief.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Arkansas interim head coach Reggie Herring has been named defensive coordinator at Texas A&M.

Herring had been defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas for three seasons under Houston Nutt, who resigned November 26th.

Nutt's successor, Bobby Petrino, hired Mississippi State defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson.

Herring will replace Gary Darnell, who worked under Aggie coach Dennis Franchione the past two seasons.
