Shawn Merriman

cptnbreakdance

Waterboy
It is starting to look more and more like DJ will not be an option at #13, and with all of the moves at LB in the offseason, and I still think we take a big playmaker at the possition. and Merriman would fit in perfectly, at ILB OR OLB. Asside from taking a WR in the first, Merriman looks real good at #13.

(did I spell his name right?)

When did it ever look like DJ was going to be an option at 13? If we want Merriman, we'd better pray for someone rated below him to have an ungodly pro day and jump ahead of him...If not, he'll be gone by 13 also...

Merriman is this yr's Babin. Nice combine numbers with bad college film. I think he is way overrated. Alex Barron ate this kid for lunch every yr they faced each other. His forty times and shuttles are not even elite. Look at pollacks Shuttle and you will realize that his shuttle is faster than even an elite CB. That tells you why he always makes plays, because he is quick in short areas. That shuttle time is faster than Dunta's last yr. That made my eyes pop out.

he ran 4.66 and his shuttle times suck. Pollack has faster shuttle times than the top 3 CB in this draft. His shuttle was even faster than Dunta's last yr and he is 265 lbs! And for 3-4 DE shuttle times are the most important speed number. That is why pollack made plays at Ga. Merriman did nothing in college compared to pollack and he got dominated by guys like Barron all day. I was not a fan of the Babin selection last yr and his production was rather ordinary for his slot. He has alot to prove. So does Merriman. I would stay away from him

well i'm not big on merriman either...but i'm also not a big fan of us drafting an OLB in the first round...doing that will be the texans way of saying peek you'll never start for us...and personally i'd like to see peek be a starter this season...i don't care if he's a liability on pass coverage because he shouldn't be the one we're dropping into coverage...Peek was the only linebacker last season that played with some fire and that's what this defense needs

as for pollack i love the kid...not as a 3-4 DE though...i would actually like him to be used as a ILB for us like tedy bruschi...i've said it before he reminds me a lot of bruschi when bruschi was coming out of college...pollack has the speed and the talent for it...i think some how we were able to grab him either in a trade back into the 1st round or in the second(both very doubtfull) that he would be awesome for us...our lineup in a few years would hopefully look like this:

peek greenwood pollack babin

now that's kick ***(if pollack was able to make the transitition of course)

Did you mean 3-4 OLB, since that's the position Pollack and Merriman would play for the Texans?

shuttle time s are important for a 3-4 or 4-3 end, it tells you how they perform in the short space of time that DE's have to make plays. pollack has that and a whole lot of it. Merriman is a Babin clone and i am not sold on him one bit. It also goes without saying i dont think too much of babin.

I don't think we'll draft Barron with our first round pick. I don't why we should pay first round money to a guy who might not even start right now for us. Barron may turn out to be a good player, but I'll be happy if we get Merriman or Pollack. I think Pollack will be available later in the first round, so we might trade down. But I love Pollack's intensity and passion for the game. The only problem is that drafting Pollack will mean we will have another Jason Babin on our hands. That means, he has to learn how to play coverage and all that. But his pass rushing skills could be very handy for us.

I think we should more or less look at lines and defensive secondary. Our defensive line definately needs more boost DeLoach and Sears are world class benchwarmers never developed in the way Capers had hoped they would.

I think Walker is on his last leg, hes not getting penetration, I could be wrong, we won't know till next year. Payne was decent but not a heads up nose tackle he doesnt get to many defelctions but he is the best we have at that position. Robaire is solid.

At LB PeeK is our pass rush specialist/disruptor. Babin is more a disruptor and if he can grasp the playbook he may move into the interior LB position Next Year. Wong is our DAP linebacker I say that because like DAP he can fill a hole wherever. Greenwood is our cover specialist and will prolly make more tackles at the 2nd level if the play gets past the frontlines. Sharper (if he stays) will be our leader/fire and run punisher. That is pretty solid I think.

Besides its well documented that Capers likes to pick linebackers in the later rounds, and if we signed all these FA Linebackers it tells me his scouting says unless its DJ, we shouldnt pursue this position in round 1. I see us picking a plethora of lineman this year nothing to spectacular.

WE will NEVER AGREE on WHO we draft this year, but we can agree its a good problem to have. for every position 1 says is weak another says it can be filled later. Atleast we are moving in the right direction unlike TB which drafted like 3 QBs in a row with 0 making a difference.

Babin had a good workout, but he had a great college career also. Check out this profile...
